Born Reginald Evelyn Peter Southouse Cheyney, he trained as a lawyer before getting tired of legal office work and joining the Army. He fought at the second Battle of the Somme in World War I and was wounded but when he returned to England he wrote songs, poems and short stories for various newspapers and magazines and used many pseudonyms.

He also turned his hand to journalism, was a newspaper editor and also owned a detective agency, Cheyney Research Investigations.

His first published novel was This Man Is Dangerous and this began his prolific novel writing career. Thereafter he averaged two mystery novels a year with his best known characters being Slim Callaghan and Lemmy Caution and he became one of the best known and most successful of British crime novelists. His success also brought with it financial rewards and he was recognised as one of the richest authors of the time.

There have been many film versions of his works, which helped spread his popularity, particularly to the United States.

His life-style, one of hard-living, much like his characters, and hard work eventually took their toll and he died at age 55. He was buried at Putney Vale Cemetery.

Michael Harrison published a biography in 1954 entitled Peter Cheyney Prince of Hokum and there have been a number of biographical essays over the years.

I had never read a Peter Cheyney before and picked this up on impulse in one of the mini-secondhand bookshops which have started to spring up lately in churches, train stations, etc. (What a wonderful idea they are.) I enjoyed it hugely, having extremely low expectations and this review reflects my lack of knowledge of the Cheyney oeuvre.

The book read like a Raymond Chandler homage, essentially. It is set in the UK, and London seems just as effective as a dark, rain-soaked setting for noir as would Chicago or LA. However, the characters' behaviour and dialogue is comically Americanised - I don't know if Cheyney himself was American and fancied this was how British people talked, or British and just wanted to make his story sound like Chandler. Either way, the effect is bizarre, with private detective Slim Callaghan addressing his female upper-class client as 'Madame' and issuing tough talk out of the side of his mouth.

Despite these stylistic oddities, the story entertained me. In terms of the gloomy milieu and seedy street life, it reminded me a lot of Brighton Rock, which must come from around the same era. I also liked Callaghan because, like Philip Marlowe, he is an honourable man, and I enjoyed his cunning and intelligence. However, the plot was incredibly contrived, and felt retrofitted throughout - 'I need this to happen, therefore the plot needs to involve this element, even if I have to shoehorn it in'. The whodunit was both wildly implausible and so predictable that I guessed the villain at the beginning - however, I enjoyed the ride nonetheless, like taking a journey one has taken many times before.

Overall, I enjoyed The Urgent Hangman and plan to read more of Cheyney, if I discover any more of his books lurking down a side-alley in the rain with their collars turned up and hats pulled well down over their faces...

I was sooo frustrated by this book. First of all, the character's sexism makes other noir protagonists look downright chivalrous. Additionally, for the most of the time, I thought this book will be all about how a clever, ruthless P.I. uses a naive woman in his plan to fleece other characters of their money, while providing them with fake alibis. Not that Callaghan wasn't clever, but it wasn't exactly the story I was interested in reading.

I should have had more faith.

I should have seen the twist at the ending coming, but I haven't and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I need to read more books by this author, though I hear they are mostly out of print.

Americká drsná škola v anglickém podání. Mix klasické drsné školy v nezvyklém prostředí s hezkou anglickou detektivkou s prvky who dunne it žánru.

Meh

Callaghan certainly isn’t even a Sam Spade, much less a Marlowe, and Cheyney certainly was no Raymond Chandler. This is mediocre, derivative rubbish. The story more or less makes sense but Slim trying to talk and act like Marlowe just doesn’t work. Besides, he lied to the police, obstructed their investigation and framed an innocent man, and got a letter of thanks from the cops? Are you kidding? He would have been tossed into prison!
