Tsukushi endures innumerable ups and downs in this entry in Yoko Kamio's acclaimed series. Domyoji Tsukasa is as jealous as ever with the arrival of Thomas, while lurid and embarrassing photos of Tsukushi and Thomas emerge. Just when she thought things couldn't get any worse, Tsukushi's tormentors up the ante of cruelty and violence. Only one boy comes to her rescue. Which one will it be?
Yōko Kamio (神尾葉子) is a popular Japanese manga artist and writer. She is most famous for Boys Over Flowers (花より男子, Hana Yori Dango?), for which she received the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1996. Her work has been translated and distributed in Asia, Europe, and North America.
Yōko Kamio readily admits that she had no intention of becoming a professional manga artist when she was young. Kamio originally went to secretarial school, but her love of drawing soon led her astray. She then eventually entered the professional mangaka field in 1989. In the following years, Kamio published Suki Suki Daisuki, Ano Hi ni Aitai, and Meri-san no Hijitsu in Margaret before she finally created Hana Yori Dango in 1992.
The Hana Yori Dango manga became established relatively quickly in Japan. Many people commended Kamio for her realistic portrayal of high school life and everyday violence through the Hana Yori Dango series. Although Kamio was initially surprised by the confessions of high school violence stated in fan letters, she realized that Tsukushi's fiery character served as a role model for much of Japan's youth and helped others cope with school violence.
Kamio watched as the success of Hana Yori Dango's 1992 début followed through with many more months on the best-sellers list. Voice CDs by SMAP and a live action movie about Hanadan charted the series success in the mid-1990s. By 1995, an animated series for Hana Yori Dango was already in progress and Kamio had also helped pick main leads for the anime show.
Hana Yori Dango ran in the Japanese Margaret magazine as well as the Korean Wink. The series has also been published in Japanese, Chinese, Cantonese, Thai, Korean, French, and English. The anime series has been broadcasted in Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Italy, and has also been licensed and released in the United States. Additionally, it was also recreated in a Game Boy Color game (only released in Japan) during the summer of 2001. With its ever-increasing popularity, Hana Yori Dango was then made into a popular live action TV series in Taiwan titled Meteor Garden. The manga series finally ended in Margaret's August 2003 issue, and the 36th tankōbon which included the Akira special "Night of the Crescent Moon" was released in January 2004 as the manga's final volume.
While Yoko Kamio initially wanted Hanazawa Rui to be the main hero of Hana Yori Dango, due to the outstanding personality of Domyoji Tsukasa (and Domyoji also becoming more popular than Rui) she changed the hero role to Domyoji.
Despite Hana Yori Dango's success, Kamio had originally planned to end the series by Spring 2000. However, in February 2000, at a mangaka conference in Taipei, Taiwan Kamio announced that she would continue writing Hana Yori Dango. At one point, she got so wrapped up in the Hana Yori Dango storyline, that she confessed to having dreams about Doumyouji. Of course, she said that "Falling in love with a character that I created is just disgusting..."
Seriously? In what world does a girl get dragged in the schoolyard by a car? And get beaten to a pulp. And other teenagers just stand there and cheer on. And teachers don't hear anything, nor intervene. That's stupid, unrealistic and simply disgusting.
*SIGH* This part is just so difficult to read. Like I feel bad for not stopping and giving up the series. But I have watched two versions of live dramas so it wasn't news....although the car bit was a surprise. Can we just....say that this is a fiction and real life should never EVER be this way? I've read a lot of manga and physical abuse and "almost rape" are tools often used in Shojo. I'm not okay with it but I've gotten used to it?
while i realize that it's difficult to keep a comic with this many volumes lively, i have huge issues with what happened to tsukushi in this volume. 1) quasi date rape: sakurako and the gorgeous foreigner drugged her and posed her for pictures in the gorgeous foreigner's bad. 2) the school deciding to "punish" tsukushi for the scandalous picture by throwing rocks at her face, beating her up, tying her hands together, and dragging her behind a car. 3) tsukasa comes to save her, but when he sees the scandalous pictures of her being DATE RAPED, he leaves her to be dragged behind the car.
he apologizes at the end. but OH MY GOD yoko kamio. it would be one thing if you were trying to make a political statement about the way people treat each other. are you? is that what you're doing? or are you a complete SADIST.

Also, fuck you, Sakurako.
The story started seriously and story bird is very interesting. And also new secondary characters appeared, they make the story more interesting and attractive!
Volume 5 keeps the rollercoaster of Tsukushi Makino and Tsukasa Domyoji’s relationship in full swing, blending high school drama with moments of budding romance. The story plays with the contrast between Tsukushi’s grounded, stubborn nature and Tsukasa’s impulsive, hot-headed charm, giving us a few heartfelt interactions that hint at deeper feelings beneath the chaos.
However, the volume also indulges in repetitive conflicts and exaggerated misunderstandings, which can feel more tiring than entertaining at times. Some side plots pull attention away from the main relationship without adding much weight to the overall story.
The artwork remains bold and expressive, capturing both the comedy and tension of the series. While not the strongest installment, Volume 5 offers enough emotional beats and character chemistry to keep fans turning the pages, even if it treads familiar ground.
Bullying goes to a whole new level in this volume...so, it was intense, not in a good way (hence the 3/5). Definitely avoid the series if bullying is a trigger for you since it is a main theme so far. The protagonist is a tough girl, luckily, see fights back so much, nothing can get her down! But still, it's too intense here and there, especially in this volume.
I'm sorry, but how does such extreme bullying not get stopped? There must be one person in that whole school who would stand up to a girl being dragged by a freaking car!!! A lot of drama went down in this one and I'm excited to see what will happen next.
The story is still super cheesy, and I hate the use of sexual violence. This volume at least had some of the over-the-top drama I signed up for. Still would not recommend the series, despite my obsession with it.

I feel like the series has suddenly gotten a bit over the top. Let me reiterate this.
RAPE is a huge thing. RAPE is serious. RAPE can emotionally damage a person forever.
So why is it that when Tsukushi gets raped, everyone is acting as if its not that big of a deal? How does Tsukushi act so normal when someone took her body AGAINST HER WILL?????
Kinda outrageous if u ask me.
And Thomas, he should be brought to justice. Even though it was under someone else's control, then THEY should be brought to justice. The rapist gets away with it. HOW?!! WHAT?!! THE HELL?!!
I loved this series. I loved it so much. It was considered as one of my favourite mangas. Until this book. Until this fucking book.
So violent! Good heavens! What kind of school is this? Guys go on rampages, break windows, assault people? Girls get raped, beaten up, hit with bats, dragged behind cars?! At the same time it’s funny, moving, and strangely compelling. I’m either going to read this the same way I read My Hero Academia, like it’s a fantasy, or I’m going to have to quit reading it. But it’s a classic, and I like the author so much. Guess I’ll keep reading!
¡Madres!
Woah, that was an extreme bullying they did to Makino! And I can’t believe how a 16-yr old like Sakorako can design a revenge plot like that! It is one of the many unbelievable part of this story I guess. How can
I'm going to round my rating for this volume up to 4 just because it was a little better than the last volume. I read the last volume 2 days ago, but I think the smaller gap in time made it easier to like. I'm about to read the next volume so hopefully it also is better than previous volumes.
The bit with Sakurako was predictable and the bullying at the end was super over-the-top. It's not realistic at all, but this volume played fiddle with my emotions and I love that. But I don't recommend this for anyone who doesn't want some trashy drama.
The only good thing was the slight development in Tsukasa and Tsukushi. That’s why it’s a two stars and not 1 There was extream bullying and again attempted rape. Drugging of a minor and taking pictures of her nearly naked and in sexual positions with a guy. Which was then put all over the school.
