Great writer, had some crazy political sentences where you had to re read to understand what they said. The author had some funny interactions with leaders of state.
This is actually one of the best books I have read dealing with the political/military situation in Indochina during the late 1950s/early 1960s; I find it surprising that it is not better known. Though I may be mistaken, I don't believe this book was ever published in the U.S. Mr. Field's work is a thorough, well-written overview which makes a useful adjunct to contemporary books of that era such as Denis Warner's 'The Last Confucian' as well as Malcolm Browne's 'The New Face Of War' and the classic 'The Making Of A Quagmire' by David Halberstam. I would not necessarily classify 'The Prevailing Wind' as indispensable, but I certainly consider it to be a valuable addition to my library.
