I really enjoyed this book and the special bond between family and strangers. How lives intermingled and brought people together, through laughter and tragedy.
This has been my book for bedtime reading the last couple of weeks. For a night owl like me, good bedtime book is one that I look forward to, but not a thrilling page-turner that will tempt me to stay awake.
While I enjoyed much of the first part of this book, soon after the main character allowed herself to be manipulated into a marriage that she didn't want, the story got flat for me. I've continued slogging away, but now at the halfway point, I realize I just can't take it any more.
Once a "bedtime" book starts feeling like hard work, it's time to give up on it. The last thing I need is a book that encourages me to stay *away* from my pillow!
The story opens with a funeral, and is followed by a lengthy flashback. Many realistic characters in a very readable book, although it was a bit confusing in places as the people span the generations and the book moves fairly fast.
Recommended somewhere as "Rosamunde Pilcher-like". It's not, and it took me awhile to get into the characters. Although I was tempted to not finish it, I kept going and ended up enjoying the second half of the book much more than the first half. Not sure if I'll read more by this author. Maybe.
