He can't even think straight when she's around. When Frogilina smiles at him through the monkey bars, Froggy falls smack on his head-bonk! So with Valentine's Day just a week away, Froggy gets busy making an extra-special valentine. The fifth book about the irrepressible Froggy, this is sure to keep children giggling with delight.
An IRA-CBC Children's Choice Book
"The narrative is smoothly written with rhythmic language and the repetition that young children love...A great read-aloud for Valentine's Day, or whenever love is in the air." — School Library Journal
Jonathan London is the author of several celebrated children's books. His commitment to honoring the wonders of the natural world has been lauded by readers and critics alike. He is the author of more than 70 children's books, many of which are about nature. He's also the author of the popular Froggy series. He lives in Graton, California with his wife and two sons.
This is a cute story about Froggy who is easily distracted, and even more so when the new girl settles into class and sits right next to him. He thinks she is the prettiest frog he has ever seen and can't stop thinking about her. She likes him too, and gives him little gifts. It's the gift she gives him on Valentine's Day that helps him realize who he loves best. Fun illustrations.
Our girls really enjoy the Froggy stories. The onomatopoeia, the way nothing ever goes comletely as planned, and the inimitable illustrations by Frank Remkiewicz...they really add a lot of charm to these stories. The familiar refrain of "Frrooggy!" followed by "Wha-a-a-a-t?" is always fun to read aloud and our girls will often chime in with the parts that are common to all of the stories.
This book has a sweet Valentine's Day theme and our girls were only slightly embarrassed by the kiss. (Ew, gross!) We enjoyed reading this book together.
Froggy's fun character in Froggy's First Kiss is sure to provide your children with several good laughs! I believe this book, is a great Valentine's Day book that is sure to provide some great class discussions. This book could easily be used for; predications, cause and effect, family relationships & discussing classroom "crushes". At the end of the book, Froggy learns that family is more important than school crushes, which is something every child can have a lesson on. :) Overall, I would recommend this book for pre-k through 3rd grade.
Best read aloud to the 3rd grade class valentine party book ever! I LOVE this book!!! Seriously! Do NOT think ANY other children's author has hit it - this valentines day celebration thing we do - any more accurately! It's a book kids are ok listening to and a book moms love to read. Better than A Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein - that one just made my mom cry but made me embarrassed as ever that my mom was crying! There's not even a dead dog in it like in Where the Red Fern Grows - when she bawled over that one it was almost forgivable - if you like dogs. But a tree! Who cares about a tree? No, I'm sorry, I digress. This book is a Double Star Winner. Go Froggy!!!!
One of my difficult little Kindergarten students chose this book in media today. We had a few minutes left and he was over the moon that I read his book to the class. It was a fine story for Valentine's Day -- Froggy is in loooove with Frogilina, until he realizes that love may require action. An okay selection for elementary school collection but not one that I recommend as a read aloud.
The book is set during Valentine's Day and the main character is Froggy the frog. The book takes us to school with Froggy, and there is a new student in his class. Froggy thinks the new student is the prettiest girl he has ever seen! She, Frogilina, starts giving him gift during lunch everyday, like a heart shape cookie, read the book to find out the last gift she gives him. I enjoyed the storyline because it was interesting and kept on making me want to read what would happen next. I enjoyed the cuteness and funniness throughout the book. I thought the pictures on every page were entertaining, but were not my favorite type of drawings. Since the book is set around Valentine's Day, it would be cute to read it around the holiday. It would be a cute idea for the class to make cut out hearts, like the classroom in the book did. Then, students could write a sweet valentine to one of their family members. This would be a fun activity to use the students creativeness and writing skills.
I love Froggy. He’s goofy and silly and relishes new things, except perhaps his first kiss. This is a great read-a-loud to share on Valentine’s Day! The trick to any Froggy book is to read it with PASSION! Get into all the sounds effects! Let that "Ewww" reverberate off the walls! When the teacher yells for Froggy, you YELL OUT too, in the squeakiest old-teacher voice you can muster! So what if you’re in a library (yes, this coming from a Children’s Librarian)! Books are meant to be enjoyed and if you are to teach that to a young child, then you need to SHOW that you find enjoyment too! Dive into the book with reckless abandon and the kids will love it; and you’ll be surprised to learn that they don’t care if you mess up on a word or don’t pronounce something just right; they simply delight in the moment shared.
Summary: The week before Valentine’s Day, Froggy was getting very distracted in class because there was a new student named Frogilina. Froggy liked Frogilina and would sit in class and stare at her, until his teacher would yell, “It’s not polite to stare.” The two would play together at recess and sit together at lunch. The day before Valentine’s Day, the class made crafts in class to give away. Froggy made a big heart that said I LOVE YOU on it. Then that day at lunch Frogilina kissed Froggy on the cheek, and he was so surprised! On Valentine’s Day, Froggy gave his big heart to his mom, not Frogilina!
Possible Topics: 1. Don't get distracted by your crush in class. 2. Be sure to stick up for yourself, don't let others pick on you. 3. Never stop loving your mom!
This is one of the many Froggy Books. Froggy was not paying attention in class and then he noticed Frogilina. He got all soft inside. He kept staring at her. They shared lunch and played. They cut out paper hearts. Froggy wrote one with "I Love You." She gave him a kiss on the check. He was like eww. Everyone teased him. In the end, he gave his mom the "I Love You" heart and his mom gave him chocolate kisses. His mom was his special Valentine. Froggy is just a silly little frog that gets into funny situations. This book is a good book to read to kids during Valentine's Day. I would say this book would be suitable for PK-2nd grade. I love reading the Froggy Books. I used to read them as a kid. When I found the books, it took me back.
Summary: Valentine's Day is coming around the corner and Froggy found someone to be his valentine. Frogilina makes Froggy forget to pay attention in class and bonk his head often! Froggy makes a special valentine for his special person. Will Frogilina be his valentine this year?
Theme: This book is good for Valentine's Day and for when love is in the air!
Personal Review: I loved this book! I thought it was hilarious and the way it was written was fun. The illustrations are well done and add excitement to the book. I recommend this for children to read because it's a good book that talks about Valentine's Day and what it is all about.
"Froggy's First Kiss" by Jonathan London is a sweet and humorous children's book that tells the story of Froggy's first crush and his attempts to impress his new love interest. With its relatable themes and colorful illustrations by Frank Remkiewicz, this book is a great choice for young readers who are beginning to navigate the world of friendships and crushes. The story offers a lighthearted take on young love, making it a fun and enjoyable read for both children and parents alike.
The USA has a number of helpful things and a number of unhelpful things, the obsession with Valentine's Day is one of their weird things they have, as is giving the cards and attempting to get children who should be just playing around involved in romantic partnerships before they should be even contemplating it. Anyway this whole book just seemed rather awkward, although the ending was satisfying.
Froggy develops a significant infatuation with Frogilina, the new girl, who evokes feelings within him that are described as "soft and wiggly." This distraction leads to him frequently bumping his head. He creates a special valentine inscribed with "I love you" for Frogilina but chooses to conceal it. In an unexpected turn, Frogilina surprises Froggy with a large kiss on the cheek, leaving him flustered. Teased by his friends, Froggy becomes overwhelmed and ultimately decides to give his "I love you" valentine to his mother, who rewards him with candy kisses, resulting in a warm and joyful conclusion. The narrative delves into the exhilarating yet perplexing emotions associated with a first crush, utilizing the imagery of "soft and wiggly" sensations. It employs repeated "bonk!" sounds and slapstick humor to convey excitement and awkwardness, which is a signature element of the Froggy series. Froggy's dilemma is resolved when he recognizes that love can also be found in simple, intimate relationships, such as that with his mother. The story reinterprets Valentine's Day, expanding the concept of love beyond mere romantic affection to encompass familial love, imparting a valuable lesson for children. Despite the presence of a romantic interest, the narrative underscores the importance of cherishing those who genuinely care for you, like a parent, especially when romantic feelings seem overwhelming.
It's almost Valentine's Day, and Froggy has a crush on Frogilina. When she kisses him, he is embarrassed (especially since all of his friends make fun of him), and gives his Valentine's Day card to his mother instead.
Meh. Not my favorite Froggy book, and there are better options for a Valentine's Day storytime.
Froggy's First Kiss (Froggy) by Jonathan London Valentimes day will never be the same to the kindergarten class. they learn that sometimes you get more than you asked for when you attempt to make new friends.
I am reading this a little early for Valentine's Day, but still a sweet little kids book.
Thought the I Love You valentine's card was for Frogilina, but actually it was for his Mom! Very sweet book, and a good message & read for any kid! ❤ 💘 ❤

Love Froggy books and this is one of my favorites. When I was a nanny this was one that the 4 year old boy always picked out. He always giggled at Froggy's faces and the onomatopoeia words. It has been fun to read to my little girl who right now only appreciates the bright colors.
The new girl in Froggy's class, Frogilina, has Froggy all discombobulated. Froggy's emotions are all a flutter when he's around Frogilina, and with Valentine's Day a week away something must be done to bring Froggy back to his senses.
Elementary Librarian here... I read this book to my PK-2nd and they HOWLED with laughter. Such a simple book but so funny. It works great with Novel Effect as well. Good lessons about friendship and family and how love can look different depending on who you are.
favorite quote: ________ "When the bus stopped, he flopped all the way home - flop flop flop. But his heart felt heavy. Was it love? Was it hunger? Was it his backpack, filled with Valentine cards?" - Jonathan London, from " Froggy's First Kiss" (1998)
My son watches the Ladybug and Cat Noir show, so he's now invested in unrequited love and first kiss in a typical kid way, which is to say that it is "gross" (but still very curious). So this book checked the list for my little dudes' current fascination.
Typical Froggy story. He keeps getting yelled at by the teacher because he can't keep his eyes off the new girl in class - Frogilina! But who is the giant paper Valentine for???
A funny Valentine's story. Adequate for primary students, but there's a bit of language involved, which might need pre-teaching and/or dramatisation by the teller
