The growing love between Jickory, champion smeller, and Sona, champion listener, is forbidden by the strict tribal rules imposed by autocratic chief Pak Pulse, so they escape, with another couple, and embark on an adventurous journey over a mountain to the Yonderlands. Brought to manhood by the many challenges he has confronted and by Sona’s love, Jickory eventually defeats Pak Pulse in hand to hand combat, liberating the village he grew up in. The River is an adventure story, a coming–of-age story, a love story, and an allegory about post-911 America. It will appeal to pre- and mid-teen readers. While it features some violence and sex, The River has a clean feel. I wanted to write a story in which young readers could identify closely with the main characters; hence there’s no magic, no supernatural element. - Emmanuel WilliamsReviews for The River!5 stars! This book is very interesting. It is very enjoyable and it has very good detail. The author did a very good job on adding detail and interesting words I’ve never hear before. I really like the characters and their personalities. This is such a good story and I think it should be published and people should read it. Most importantly, my favorite thing about this book was all the things that were happening and all the action!-5th grader5/5 starsI loved this book so much! I couldn’t get my nose out of this book! There was so much detail! Especially when describing the characters and the setting. I love books that have so much detail and the point where I feel like I am at the scene of the story. This book is just that. All the action in the book made me never want to put the book down. This book was perfect! I loved it and I can’t wait to read more books by Emmanuel Williams!-Abbie Dodson, grade 65/5 stars!I really like this book, The River has so much action you never get bored. I like how the characters are all different but somehow everything works out. The ending is super good too. It makes me with there was more. The wriing is very detailed like explain how everything looks, and the smells. The way it’s written makes it so you could understand what it’s saying. I love the words like like marry-mated because usually in books it would just say marry or married. Overall I really enjoyed reading the river.
