Amy Turner has written an amazing collection of poetry that gives the reader a glimpse into her own soul. One poem can make me laugh out loud while the next can make me cry. Her work is thought-provoking, heartfelt, and intelligent. Her true gift is her ability to move the reader with her words.

Amy Turner has written an amazing book of poetry. I love books that delve into the soul and this little number is aptly named. Amy was gracious enough to provide me with a copy to read. I don’t normally read poetry, so I was excited to give this book at try. I wasn't disappointed. Pieces of the Soul has not left my purse since I received it in the mail. I pull it out and read a poem whenever I can and I’ve already marked some of my favorites. I think everyone can relate to the emotions that Amy expresses in the lines of her writing. Things we celebrate, love, regret, hate, our insecurities, loves lost…. She captures all the elements we are inside and out.

I don't own any modern poetry books except one, and that is Pieces of the Soul. The words are so powerful and magical that I feel like I said them myself. Some brought me nearly to tears, and others made me feel pure joy.

It's truly an amazing collection of poems. The fact that Pieces of the Soul is on my shelf next to French 19th century poets should tell you more than my words can convey.

I really hope there's another one soon!

This is a book of free-verse poetry that one can easily identify with as the emotions and processes it examines are universal elements of the human condition. Whether it is grief, betrayal, heartbreak, new love, or self-knowledge this little book of poems addresses them all.

As free verse poetry it had neither rhyme nor meter nor set metrical pattern . There are some complete stanzas, and there are some lines that simply stand alone. I would say that it is more lyric poetry than descriptive although it does have very descriptive passages, those passages provoke strong emotions giving it a more lyric tone than a descriptive one.

Some of my favorite poems are “Forgiveness” about putting to sleep a beloved pet and all the feelings of denial, helplessness and guilt that accompanies such a hard, hard decision. In the poem the author says, “as I held your head in my lap….stop your heart/stop the illness…is what still haunts me. In my heart I know/I have your forgiveness/I just wish/I had mine.”

Another poem that really had a strong impact on me was, “Grandpa.” Poems are sometimes difficult to interpret but from what I can determine, he was a bad man. However, the author was able to put it behind her and writes, “It’s okay now/I have made my family/It’s made of blood/and not blood/friends and family/but not you…”

There are quite a few poems in this book and many, many of them have important messages and evoke strong emotions with which I think we can all identify. My one real issue with the book is that there are many poems listed simply as, “Untitled.” I find this unfair to both the reader and the poem itself as the work of some of them, the emotions that they evoke are so strong and clear that a title would be of service to both the poem and the reader
