An once-in-a-life-time look into Elvis between really famous and super nova famous. There is something incredibly beautiful about Elvis in these photos. He looked like an alien from Memphis - I mean how does a guy who grew up in Memphis could wear eye makeup? Who in the hell (or heaven) was Elvis? We'll never know, because he didn't know either. But for a little time, that little opening, a photographer documented his early years - and god what great images. Iconic yes, but also deeply moving.

In 1956, a photographer named Alfred Wertheimer had the opportunity to follow a young Elvis Presley as he jumped from one stage to the next. The photos are all black and white and capture Elvis before any of the real craziness began. Westheimer invites us in as he shares his experiences in words and photos. An absolute must read for any Elvis fan. You know who you are.
