In a time of peril, she fears nothing—except the forbidden passions of her heart.

In Boston, revolution is in the wind—yet none would ever suspect Faith Kingston of treason. But under cover of darkness, the beautiful daughter of a Tory tavern owner becomes the notorious spy “Lady Midnight,” passing valuable secrets to the rebels. Dedicated to fighting British tyranny, she’ll let nothing distract her— until a dark, mesmerizing stranger enters her life.

A reckless, worldly adventurer, Nicholas Grey has returned to troubled Massachusetts seeking revenge for the death of his rebel father. He suspects a local innkeeper, but it’s the man’s breathtaking, ebony-skinned daughter who has truly captured his interest. Nicholas burns for the sensuous, secretive lady—and Faith cannot mask her own blazing desires. But when destiny unites their causes, the passion that draws Midnight into Nicholas’s arms is as dangerous as it is glorious—and it could spell disaster for them both.

A little commotion for the cover.

Beverly Jenkins has to be one of the most comforting historical romance authors for me. I never fail to get lost in her stories, in the romances she writes, in the Black history she’s so dogged about representing, in her heroines who persevere and are strong-minded and in writing heroes who just see and accept them as they are.

This has to be one of my favourites of hers for sure.

As always, I had a wonderful time with Ms. Bev's worldbuilding and romance, this time set in revolutionary Boston-area. I haven't read much revolutionary era historical romance and gosh darn, I loved it.

ALSO let's talk about how Nicholas Grey is such a great hero, especial for Faith Kingston aka Lady Midnight. He doesn't fix her problems, he helps support her. He gives Faith a home, an AMAZING BATH TUB. His nursing skills? Unmatched!

Faith's journey from "good girl" to boundary setting queen was also lovely to see and so much fun to read about.

Pull up a pelt by the fire, and sink in.

Riveting historical romance featuring a strong courageous female and an equally brave adventurous man. Set in Boston during the Revolutionary War the story gives very real insights into the contributions of the race towards the progress and founding of our nation. The author notes books used as sources for readers interested in further exploring this part of American History.

4 stars. I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while just based off of that beautiful cover alone. Add in the fact that it’s by Beverly Jenkins and we’ve got a winner. I really enjoyed it.

I seem to go on and on about how much I love Jenkins’s writing every time I review a book by her so I won’t here, but just know that she’s fantastic at what she does. The characters were everything. Faith is very strong and it honestly broke my heart the things she had to put up with because of her father but she never cowered or backed down, she was headstrong and stood strong for what she wanted and believed in.

And then you have Nicholas who is the most perfect bastard ever and I loved him dearly. He’s impulsive and charming and very protective of those he cares about. The whole scene where he confronts Faith’s father after he throws her out added about thirty years to my life span. It was wonderful. Their relationship develops very nicely. They have some great banter between them and watching them give in to their feelings was fun.

I’ve found that Historical romances are very hit or miss with me but I’m glad this one was a hit. It’s a lot of fun with a wonderful romance.

Midnight is a historical romance from Beverly Jenkins that takes place during the Revolutionary War! This cover is absolutely stunning and I had a great time with this read. Queen Bev always adds so much rich history into her reads and the balance with the romance is always so well done. I’ve read all of her historical romances now and I’m still just always in such awe of her craft!

Faith Kingston is 26 and lives in Boston with her father when the story starts in 1775. After her mother’s death when she was just 8, Faith was raised by her loyalist father. At night, Faith works with a group of rebel spies and she’s known as “Lady Midnight”. Nicholas Grey comes back to Boston for his father’s death and ends up running into Faith and her father. Their dads were friends growing up but then became enemies at some point. His father worked secretly with the rebels and Nicholas ends up taking over his father’s work as well and will be working alongside the mysterious Lady Midnight. Things are also complicated because Nicholas is convinced that Faith’s father played a part in his father’s arrest and eventual death. When Faith’s dad ends up kicking her out, she and Nicholas decide to marry!

I loved seeing the development of Nicholas and Faith’s relationship, their friendship and eventual marriage. He spoils her and takes her on a shopping spree, treats her to things she deserves in life and hadn’t been given, and supports her wanting to start a bread baking business. Faith was a strong heroine, Bev’s writing sells me on spy storylines, and I just really liked this timeframe for this story.

I mean I had a great time but there was not enough comeuppance for the people who deserved it and I have Feelings about the central conflict (what was it? By the end I was like “what is left to be resolved). But Beverly stays writing heroes who are immediately obsessed with and set on spoiling the heroine and I must salute her for that

Faith Kingston the rebel spy! We love to see it. Honestly, there hasn't been a heroine of BJ’s that I haven't loved or at least liked and Faith is no different. Midnight didn't have the same feel as her others but I enjoyed it no less. I feel like Faith and Nick got involved kinda quick but it's okay cause I still love their spontaneity.

So done with this book that I just skim read the last 80 or so pages.

I should've learned my lesson after Tempest but I was hoping for another Destiny's Surrender. Who edited this book and thought it was okay to have those phrases to describe the vulva and vagina. Who?! Seriously though because I need to ask them why they were okay to use. "Damp vent", "damp channel", "damp tightness", "damp gate". At this point I hate the word damp more than the word moist. There, I said it.

I thought I could get through Captured after this but I'm done. I'm not putting myself through another "damp vent" phrasing in a genre I've come to love dearly. FUCK THAT. If after all of this you would still like to read Beverly Jenkins' books, I would recommend you read Destiny's Embrace, Destiny's Surrender and Destiny's Captive, which have no "damp ____" in sight.

In ‘Midnight,’ Beverly Jenkins provides a rarely told and unique glimpse into revolutionary war Boston from the perspective of people of African descent. This novel thoughtfully portrays the story and struggle of Black colonists and Loyalists in an oft-overlooked aspect to this nation’s struggle for independence. The fight for freedom takes on new meaning in this story featuring Faith Kingston and Nicholas Grey as part of the free Black community in New England as events lead to the shot heard ‘round the world.
The daughter of Inn owner Stuart Kingston, Faith has known only hard work and rules as her iron-fisted Loyalist father entertains British General Gage and his men for secret meetings even as she works covertly on behalf of the Patriots. When her rebel contact, Primus Grey is betrayed and hung, his son Nicholas returns home determined to find the turncoat. The last known contact for Primus was the secretive Lady Midnight – a link in the chain of Patriot spies – but she proves to be as allusive to Nicholas as Faith.
With a backbone of steel and a dignity to match, the fiery Faith is drawn to the sensuous Nicholas who has begun reasserting himself into the community and Faith’s life. A series of confrontations forces Faith to renounce her father, and be cast out of their home and business she has run. Wandering the roads during a storm, she collapses and is found then taken in by Nicholas to start over. As Faith forms friendships and begins building a bread-baking business, her feelings for Nicholas are matched by his. A rebellious man and former smuggler turned fighter, Nicholas uses his contacts to arm the Minutemen and train Black soldiers in preparation for the coming war. His determined, spirited attitude eventually softens Faith as her hard work and grace win Nicholas’s admiration.
‘Midnight’ is a romance and more: it’s the story of two people among a population of many, whose dignity, resolve and grace add another chapter to the story that is the American Revolution. A very good tempo keeps this book humming and the characters are so well-drawn, we seethe with anger for Faith at her cruel father’s treatment, take up arms for the rights of people of African descent and hold our breath as the tension becomes palpable in the days before Lexington and Concord.
Incredibly sensual and alluring love scenes are a hallmark of the relationship between Nicholas and Faith as they begin their lives together in a nation about-to-be-born. While there is a lengthy amount of narrative toward the end of the book in an effort to bring the story around through 1775 and some of the confessions neatly tidied up, ‘Midnight’ is a book to be savored and appreciated.
It’s incredibly refreshing to read a story that is not about vampires, dukes, or England, but one that brings people back to another amazing period in history and reminds us that deep down, we all share a desire for freedom, love and acceptance.

Okay but this cover is everythinggggg. I like historical fiction and I love romance, but wasn’t sure I’d like them together. Heads up… I was wrong.

The story is set in Boston during the Revolutionary War. It highlights what life was like for freed and enslaved blacks, and how their contributions affected the outcome of the Revolutionary War. Faith (Lady Midnight) is a notorious spy passing valuable information on to the rebels. Her anonymity is crucial to her safety since her father is a hardcore supporter of the Crown. Nicholas Grey has just returned to Boston after 10 years away to discover his rebel father was arrested and ultimately died.

Nicholas and Faith’s paths cross on his quest to find out who betrayed his father, Primus Grey. Their eyes lock across the room and it’s pretty much curtains from there lol I loveee stories where the MC wants nothing but to make life easy for a good woman. Faith deserved it all ❤️

The fight for Americas freedoms from the British was real and required intel. Faith often heard the Congo of the red Coates while they dined at her father’s inn. Nick came home because he was tired and ready to set down roots. Only to discover his father had passed and was arrested because he was betrayed. The journey of Faith and Nick’s road to love was entertaining and enlightening. I learn so much and appreciate Ms Jenkins tales intertwined with American history.

I read this book for the Around the world in 80 books reading challenge for February's African American history month.
This is a story which weaves authentic history with romance. I was so intrigued by the plot centred around the Boston Revolution and the role African Americans played in it.
I love reading about brave characters who face adversities and challenge the norm. Faith is the daughter of a loyalist who spies for the rebels as Lady Midnight and Nicholas is a rich adventurer who is also a rebel living in a largely loyalist environment.

All in all, an enjoyable historical romance. I look forward to more from this author.

By day, Faith Kingston work at her father's inn. When it's dark outside and people are going to bed, she roam outside disguised as Lady Midnight, a spy passing secrets to the rebels. Her mother died when she was 8 and Faith was raised by a father who offered her education (something he regrets now because she refuse to marry the man he chose for her) but no affection.

Nicholas Grey was also raised by his father after his mother died giving birth to him. He had a falling out with his old man more than a decade ago when he left to fight for the French in the Seven Years' War. Being kidnapped and forced to work on a British ship after the war ended, Nick regain his liberty thanks to pirates and in 1775, he can finally come back home. But as soon as he arrives in Boston, he learn that his father was arrested for treason and died a few weeks ago. He vow to discover who betrayed his father and rumors talk about his father's enemy. It is fate or a lack of luck that Nick is starting to fall in love with the daughter of his father's nemesis?

Through the enemies and the traitors, what always shine in this author's books is the strength of character of her MC but also the sense of community in town, the friendship and the mutual aid between them. And she never forget to include the part Indigenous people played in history. Nick tells Faith of his time fighting alongside them and what he learned living with them too.

This book had everything. It’s set in Boston around the American revolution and Jenkins does a wonderful job of balancing the stories of the main characters with a good dose of Black American History - as we are used to from her. I think this one had a nice narrative flow and I liked that it was set during these times, it was new to me and very interesting.

I was so angry with Faith’s father but if there is something you can always find in Jenkins’ books is this sense of a higher, at times poetic justice.

I really liked both of the main characters. Nick was very swoony (the man wrote “my heart beats with yours”) and his interactions with Faith’s friends were very funny.

Other favorite parts:

- The caretaking scenes
- When Nick goes and yells at (and eventually hits) Faith father
- The shopping spree (he pays)

3.5 stars. This went in a pretty different direction than I was expecting, which I didn't mind in the middle of the book but was a little annoyed at by the end. ! Faith and Nicholas have a compelling dynamic. It was also really interesting to see Beverly Jenkins write in a different historical setting; all of the other books I've read from her take place in the late 1800s, mostly west of the Mississippi River.

I think this is the first Ms. Bev I’ve read that was set right on the cusp of the American Revolution. I really liked Faith and Nick - they had both endured a lot in their lives and to see them both finding love and make a family was really nice. If I had one complaint, I just wish the epilogue hadn’t ended with their daughter being born just as he is going off to war. It felt a little uncertain and I wish we’d had a second epilogue that was several years down the line. Regardless, I am loving my monthly Ms. Bev histrom reads and this was equally engrossing.

I always enjoy books by Beverly Jenkins for a number of reasons, all of which apply to this book. She gives a spot on history lesson, yet weaves it through her romantic elements. Her characters are well-drawn and believable. Her attention to detail makes the reader feel like they're inside the story. She writes masterful sex scenes. All of these elements add up to a five-star read, a book that kept me enthralled while teaching me about events in history I wasn't well-informed about.

This was an amazing read! Midnight took place during the American Revolution and it was really cool to see the perspectives between African-American and/or Black Patriots and Loyalists. Nick and Faith had an endearing and passionate romance and I just couldn't stop reading! This is truly a great historical romance book and I highly recommend it!
