"Sometimes I think I am Judy Moody," says Megan McDonald, author of the Judy Moody series, the Stink series, and THE SISTERS CLUB. "I'm certainly moody, like she is. Judy has a strong voice and always speaks up for herself. I like that."

For Megan McDonald, being able to speak up for herself wasn't always easy. She grew up as the youngest of five sisters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Her father, an ironworker, was known to his coworkers as "Little Johnny the Storyteller." Every evening at dinner the McDonalds would gather to talk and tell stories, but Megan McDonald was barely able to get a word in edgewise. "I'm told I began to stutter," she says, leading her mother to give her a notebook so she could start "writing things down."

Critically acclaimed, the Judy Moody books have won numerous awards, ranging from a PUBLISHERS WEEKLY Best Book of the Year to an International Reading Association Children's Choice. "Judy has taken on a life of her own," the author notes, with nearly 3 million Judy Moody books in print. Interestingly, the feisty third-grader is highly popular with boys and girls, making for a strong base of fans who are among Megan McDonald's strongest incentives to keep writing, along with "too many ideas and a little chocolate." And now -- by popular demand -- Judy Moody's little brother, Stink, gets his chance to star in his own adventures! Beginning with STINK: THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING KID, three more stories, and his own encyclopedia, STINK-O-PEDIA, Stink's special style comes through loud and strong -- enhanced by a series of comic strips, drawn by Stink himself, which are sprinkled throughout the first book. About the need for a book all about Stink, Megan McDonald says, "Once, while I was visiting a class full of Judy Moody readers, the kids, many with spiked hair à la Judy's little brother, chanted, 'Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink! Stink!' as I entered the room. In that moment, I knew that Stink had to have a book all his own."

More recently, Megan McDonald has recalled some of her own childhood with the warmth, humor -- and squabbles -- of three spunky sisters in THE SISTERS CLUB.

Megan McDonald and her husband live in Sebastopol, California, with two dogs, two adopted horses, and fifteen wild turkeys that like to hang out on their back porch.

My Experience: I started reading Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer on 8/11/18 and finished it on 8/13/18. This book is super fun to read! I’m reading book 10 and though it’s in a series, this book can be read as a standalone. The Who’s Who page at the beginning of the book is really helpful! I like Judy and her brother Stink and their active imagination. I like that when Judy’s mom burns during cooking, she runs to the rescue with her water gun. I like Judy’s teacher, Mr. Todd and his fun assignment for the students to find him during summer break.

In this book, readers will follow Judy Moody, told in the third person point of view, as she counts down the last minutes of school until summer break. Judy runs a PT club with her classmates/friends as members. In this PT club, she has plans for a fun summer because last summer was boring with a capital letter B. As plans often can go wrong, Judy soon finds out that her friends will be out of town and will not be able to join in her plans for a Mega-Rare Not Bummer Summer Dare. All hope for a fun summer is not lost when Judy thought of an idea to race with her friends even while they are away to see who will achieve the highest thrill points first by taking actions in daring activities. Judy struggles with earning thrill points because her friend/PT member, Frank Pearl throws up all over her during their roller coaster ride. Judy’s brother is obsess with catching Bigfoot and Judy is nowhere near believing of its existence, but it might just save her from losing the Mega-Rare Summer Dare race.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is very well written and organized. This is the first book I have read where in place of chapter numbers are chapter titles. I love the humor. I like Judy’s younger brother Stink and his strong passion for something he loves, which in this case is Bigfoot and his constant references to Bigfoot’s book. I find the many made up words are hard to read but I do like the use of big words and the given definition within the story. I like how Judy doesn’t give up even though often her plan fails. I like the reminder about the ice cream truck because nowadays I don’t hear them coming down my street anymore. I like Judy’s easy going family. This book is fun and uplifting and I highly recommend everyone to read it, especially kids! I told my son about this book and he could hardly wait to read!

Pro: fast paced, page turner, humor, imagination, actions & adventures, friendship, family, couldn’t put down

Con: none

I rate it 5 stars!

Recently turned into a movie with was pretty much universally panned by critics - Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer is unfortunately a bit of a bummer even in book form. At least it is if you're over 12.

Judy Moody was geared up for a 'rare' (as she puts it) summer. In Judy speak, this means 'not bummer'. Unfortunately, her plans are foiled when her two best friends leave her (one for circus camp, and one for Borneo). Her plan to do dares and earn thrill points (other Judy-isms) seems lost - until her Aunt Opal shows up for the summer. Aunt Opal is the eccentric aunt that everyone wishes they had - and she may be the one saving grace of the story.

The copy of the book I picked up had some photos from the film inside, which helped me to visualize some of the situations Judy gets herself into. Aside from that - Judy is far too emotional, annoying, and over-the-top to garner any sympathy for the potential bummers in her summer.

Read this with my grandson as part of our library's summer reading program. The challenge was to read a book that had been turned into a movie and he liked the first book in this series so we gave this one a try. He enjoyed this one too.

I thought it was cute, but boy is Judy Moody moody. She certainly complains a lot and is disappointed & upset so easily. Because of this, even though I liked the story, I think two Judy Moody books in one summer is more than enough.

Judy moody and the not bummer summer is a humorously book. In th book Judy moody and her brother stink are forced to stay with their aunt Opal while their parents are out of town. In the beginning they think that aunt Opal is going ruin all of summer. But then things take a turn. Instaed of hating her they end up loving her. And when it's time for her to leave they don't want her to leave. I would definetly recommend this book who reader who like realistic fiction.

Judy Moody is always in a mood, and it's usually a bad one. This particular story of the series is about Judy and her two brothers who are being looked after by their aunt Opal over the summer whilst their parents are in California and follows Judy's mission to not have a bummer summer. An exciting and easy read, full of fun things and exciting characters.

Pretty good, I was just reading this because there was a movie based on this book and I really wanted to try this book out. It is for 3rd to 4th grade, which made it a quick read. I would not recommend this book to any 8th grader.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer (Judy Moody #10) by Megan McDonald-novel- The book opens on the last day of school (before summer break) for Judy Moody and her friends. Her teacher, Mr. Todd, says he will be working somewhere cold this summer and offers a prize to anyone who can find him. Judy is concerned that her summer will be boring and has a plan for herself and her three closest friends (Amy, Rocky and Frank) to make sure the summer is not boring. She creates a game that involves a list of ‘dares,’ meaning something fun, but never done by that person before and is borderline frightening. Thrill points are earned by successfully completing the dare, and bonus points are added if the dare is done in an extreme way. Loser points are given if the dare is not completed. If the final score breaks 100 points, then summer was confirmed exciting. It is a fine plan, but Judy does not realize that two of the four of them (Rocky and Amy) will be out of town for the summer. Making matters worse, their own plans (circus camp and a trip to Borneo) sound far more exciting than hers. Stuck at home with nothing more to do than read Nancy Drew adventures, Judy is not happy. It does not help when she learns that her parents will be traveling to California to help her grandparents move and that she and her brother, James (who goes by the nickname Stink), will be staying home from that trip, too. Their Aunt Opal is coming to watch them for the summer. Judy has not met Aunt Opal, but she assumes the worst. Aunt Opal, however, is surprisingly interesting — a free spirit who lives a life of adventure (including a stint in the Peace Corps, a trip across the Sahara Desert, and most recently, living in Bali). Judy realizes that perhaps the four friends can still do the dare game, although they will need to keep track of their own points. To increase the stakes, Judy decides to make it a race, where they will be competing against each other. The first one to 100 points wins. This begins a series of well-intended adventures designed to rack up points as quickly as possible, but every adventure goes horribly wrong. An attempt at tightrope walking across the local creek is threatened when Stink claims one of the trees to build a Bigfoot trap. Once Judy and Frank have the tree to themselves, Judy loses her balance crossing the rope and falls into the creek. A trip to the amusement park is ruined when Frank throws up on her. An art project with Aunt Opal is ruined when Judy accidentally glues her hand to the table. It takes several hours to get free. Going on a zombie walk through a graveyard at midnight sounds promising, and Aunt Opal even makes sandwiches for a picnic beforehand. Unfortunately, Aunt Opal has not driven a car for a long time; they quickly lose the map out the window and spend several hours careening around town. Eventually they end up stranded — out of gas and hopelessly lost outside an abandoned amusement park in the middle of the night. They go inside the park to eat their sandwiches, but their sandwiches had gotten too close to Stink’s ‘scat’ collection in the kitchen and have manure samples on them. It’s noticed before anyone eats them, but makes for a long, hungry night. Another time they try going to a local horror movie festival (complete with monster costumes), but the scary zombie movie is too much for Frank, and he leaves. This is bad on several levels: Judy tries to force Frank to stay in the theater and ends up tearing his shirt. The two of them argue, and he complains that her obsession with quick points is taking all the fun out of the summer. And since they did not stay through the movie, Judy cannot even claim any thrill points for completing the dare. Several times through all of these adventures gone wrong, Judy and Frank think they have found Mr. Todd’s cold summer job, but they cannot find him to win even that prize. Judy also keeps hearing about her friends’ more successful summer adventures and the thrill points they are gaining. In turn, she can write to them only of her ‘failures,’ such as when she and Aunt Opal try to deliver their art projects (hats for the stone library lions) in the rain. Or when she and Frank try learning to surf, and Judy ends up kissing a dead jellyfish. Finally, in desperation, Judy joins her brother in his own summer adventure: a quest to find Bigfoot. There have been numerous Bigfoot sightings in town throughout the summer, and her brother is convinced that not only is he real, but living nearby. Throughout most of the book, Judy has looked down on Stink’s quest with big sister disdain. But that changes upon realizing that finding Bigfoot would mean lots of thrill and bonus points, and might actually let her win this race against her friends. So, Judy jumps in with abandon, which includes Bigfoot Believers Association meetings, overnight stakeouts, bait traps and night vision goggles. At first, it really does appear to be more of the same — one more promising adventure with repeated disappointments. At one stakeout, Judy and Stink ‘capture’ Frank (who looks considerably more like Bigfoot through Judy’s night vision goggles, especially when he is tangled in their bait traps). Another time they clearly see Bigfoot and give a valiant, chaotic, and rather destructive chase through the neighborhood using bikes, a Vespa scooter and a van. Admittedly, it is weird when Bigfoot commandeers an ice cream truck, but even that makes sense by the end. (This particular sighting involves Zeke, a teenager who was asked to dress up as Bigfoot and come on a local ice cream route to help drum up business.) Zeke is not behind all the sightings though — he is one of the Bigfoot Believers Association leaders and quite convinced that Bigfoot is real and living somewhere in their neighborhood. At this point in the story, things do begin to look up. Although no Bigfoot, they do find Mr. Todd at the end of the chase. He is the ice cream man who hired Zeke. And the prizes Mr. Todd gives to students who find him at his summer job are tickets to the circus, which is coming to town. This is the same circus that Judy’s friend Rocky has been training for at circus camp. Judy gets an extra ticket for Frank and apologizes to him for letting an obsession with winning overshadow the summer. Judy’s parents come home from California in time to see the circus. And at the circus, Rocky picks Judy as the audience volunteer for the act where they appear to saw someone in half. Now that Judy and Stink’s parents are home, Aunt Opal prepares to leave. Before going though, she sneaks Judy out to deliver the hats they made together — placing them quietly on the stone lions at the library. Although this does earn Judy 10 official thrill points, we get the sense that she is, in fact, grateful for the whole summer — even the adventures that didn’t earn her points at the time. As they head back home, Judy sees a tall, shaggy figure disappearing into the brush. All Aunt Opal sees when she looks back are branches rustling in its wake, which confirms nothing (except that Judy did apparently see something tangible). When they arrive back at Judy’s house, Stink has set up shop on the front lawn, selling tickets to ‘touch Bigfoot.’ This is not the mystery figure Judy just saw, but the art sculpture on their lawn that Aunt Opal made earlier in the story. Judy jumps into this opportunity, too, eager to earn money to go to France next summer with Aunt Opal.

"Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer" is an adorable book that students would enjoy reading. The main character, Judy, is a young girl with a big personality and a thirst for adventure. In this book, most of her good friends go away for the summer, leaving her upset but determined to still make the summer fun. She goes on several crazy adventures to compete with her friends to have the best summer ever.

This book would be a great read aloud because it would appeal to most students. Judy's quirky personality and sense of humor will keep students entertained. Her exciting adventures will keep them engaged. I would read this book to my students towards the end of the school year, whenever we have time. We could share our plans and attitudes for summer and relate them to Judy's.

This book is appropriate for students in grades 3-5 because it will interest them and they will likely relate to the characters. More advanced readers could read it independently, but all students would benefit from having it read aloud to them.

Judy Moody, a girl who just wants to have the best summer ever, goes through a series of adventures in order to earn the most thrill points! It seemed like all of her friends were either at camp or doing crazier things than her. Judy and her Aunt Opal go through several adventures together trying to make it the best summer ever. Her brother Stink however, is on the hunt for Bigfoot. The turn of events throughout his search will leave you wondering what the mess is all about!

I would recommend this book to more advanced readers due to the oddly spelled phrases McDonald uses. For a new reader, these words would not make much sense. I would also recommend this book to students who has the similar sass that Judy Moody has. She a girl with a lot of personality and I feel like young girls could relate to her stories.

This book could be used in a classroom to bring up the topic of imagination and thinking outside of the box. Judy's "Thrill Points" chart was filled with creative tasks and getting students to come up with their own clever ideas.

This is my first Judy Moody Book. I don't always read the same books as my kids nor do I always read the books with my kids. But I did end up reading this one aloud with them over the summer, I am sure you can guess why based on the title.

I must say I much prefer the character of Judy Moody to that nasty little girl, Junie B. Jones. I really can't stand Junie. Any child who acted the way she did would banned from house forever!

In this book, Judy Moody is left with her aunt Opal for the summer. She plans a summer of adventures that all seem to go sideways. At the sametime, Stink (Judy's younger brother) is hunting for Bigfoot.

The Bigfoot subplot as well as the crazy aunt add a lot to book and certainly make it entertaining for kids.

As something for kids to read over the summer, this book hits the mark.

It’s summer and Judy has everything planned out, that is until all her friends have their own plans. Feeling left behind she thinks the summer is going to be a bummer, until her Aunt Opal comes to babysit her and Stink. This novel was filled with hilarious adventures one after another. The plot was fun and super engaging. The addition of Aunt Opal was perfect as she made the plots move with ease and gave Judy and Stink the opportunity to really have a thrill filled summer. Her relationship with all the kids was really well rounded and just perfect to read. Even the addition of some new characters really made things interesting and well worth the read. This has got to be one of the most exciting Judy Moody books yet.

I can see why Juliette likes these books so much. Judy has good ideas, she's full of humor and fun circumstances. My issue is the toilet humor.... There's quite a bit of gross in this story. Still, the kids really enjoyed it and I'm not so grossed out that I won't read more.

Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is an entertaining read for kids. In this book, Judy Moody's parents go on a trip without her and her little brother Stink, leaving them with their Aunt Opal, whom they barely know. Judy is worried about having a boring summer but soon discovers that her summer will be far from boring.

Throughout the book, Judy goes on Bigfoot hunts, organizes stakeouts, and creates unusual crafts like decorating garbage can lids and using them as hats for the library's lion statues. Her adventures with her friend Frank Pearl, whom she calls "Fun Mop," are hilarious and creative.

One of the most memorable scenes in the book is when Judy accidentally glues her hand to the table, and she tries to create a homemade solution to unglue her hand, which leads to a funny mishap. Another funny moment is when Aunt Opal introduces Judy and Stink to some unusual food, including fried cockroaches.

Judy Moody's character is relatable to many children. Many children can relate to her initial disappointment about her summer becoming boring, but her adventurous spirit helps her turn it around. The book's message that you can make your fun and that adventures can be found in unexpected places will resonate with young readers.

Overall, Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer is an excellent book for kids looking for a fun and silly summer read. The characters are entertaining and relatable, and the plot is easy to follow and full of fun twists and turns.

One of the things I enjoyed about this book is how the author, Megan McDonald, incorporates themes of creativity and resourcefulness throughout the story. Judy and her friends always develop new ideas and projects to keep themselves entertained, from building a clubhouse to making their movies. And even when things don't go according to plan, they can always find a way to make the best of the situation and have fun.

Overall, I recommend Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer to any reader looking for a fun and engaging summer read. It's a lighthearted and entertaining book that will put a smile on your face and inspire you to make the most of your summer adventures.

I read the book Judy Moody and the not Bummer Summer by Megan McDonald. I chose this book because I knew it was a fast and easy read. I was reading another book that was taking me a while because, I’m not that fast of a reader and I needed to finish a book soon. This book only has thirteen chapters. It only took me two and a half to three days to read it. I could have got it done in one day if I had time. Like I said this book was really easy to read. It was also really easy to comprehend.

Judy Moody and the not Bummer Summer is a book based on a young girl who is on summer break and trying to make this summer the best summer ever with her three best friends by using thrill points. That is where if you do something crazy you get thrill points and at the end of the summer they add up all the points and try to get to one hundred. Turns out that two of her best friends are leaving for summer break. Rocky Zang leaves to go to circus camp and Amy Namey leaves to go to Boreno with her mom. This leaves Frank Pearl. Not only did two of her best friends leave but her parents left too. That left Joody and her brother Stink to be in charged by their Aunt Opal.

I really enjoyed it and would recommend other people to read it. If you need a book that you can read fast this would be your type of book. If you are also looking for a book with some action and comedy this would be a good book to. To see how her summer break turns out you have to read the book. I don't think you will be disappointed after reading Judy Moody and the not Bummer Summer. After reading it you can also watch the movie!
