5☆ So informative

Ever since school I've been fascinated with all things associated with Egypt. So when I see a book about Ancient Egypt I couldn't wait to get stuck in & I wasn't disappointed!

This book is superb, the illustrations are beautifully presented. It's factual without being long winded. There's a wealth of information that young minds and adults minds will thoroughly enjoy.
This book would definitely make a Beautiful Gift and one I would treasure. I highly recommend this book.

The great civilization of the Nile River Valley is revealed in pages of information and full-colour photographs compiled by Egyptian historian George Hart. From the grandeur of the pharaohs and mummies to the ordinary life of Egyptian people, Hart delves into the details of the culture, art, and religious aspects of Ancient Egypt. This book serves as a great introduction to the Egyptians and the myths surrounding them, as well as hieroglyphics and the mummification process. Also included in a full-length poster featuring a basic time chart of major events. Ancient Egypt is an overall great primer for further research into Egyptian society.
(Thanks to Net Galley & DK Books for this Eyewitness Guide to Ancient Egypt).

Engaging approach to teaching about the lifestyle of ancient Egypt. Beautiful illustrations and concentrates on the people and topics rather than on 'dynasties'.

These "Eyewitness" books, to me, have always been pretty efficient in their goal of educating young children. As a history buff, I always wish books covering history for kids would have all the little details, but I realize that is unrealistic, so I started looking at them as gateway books for future history education. So as a children's non-fiction educational book, this one does the job well. Being somewhat well-reversed in ancient Egyptian history, this does a respectable job covering the art, culture, and religious aspects of ancient Egyptian life for such a simple, non-detail oriented book. I was impressed by the information on the hieroglyphics, as I expected them not to dig into it too much for fear it would go over the readers' heads. I would have liked to have seen pages on their ingenious methods of making 3-dimensional topographical maps, and their vast libraries, but I accepted the exclusion hoping that it would be a pleasant surprise to the same reader years later. All in all, for a children-oriented nonfiction, it keeps itself very informative and helpful in 1st layer education. A good book to have on the shelves of Social Studies classrooms.

DK Eyewitness books were the books that most inspired me as a child and the Egyptian-related volumes (Ancient Egypt and Pyramid) were my prize possessions. Without a shadow of a doubt, I would not be a Classicist now without these books.

This book is an updated and modernised version of the classic Eyewitness format. The imagery is eye-catching and informative and pairs well with the text. The textual information is informative without getting bogged down in too much detail for young people. These books are classics for a reason and I'll be sure to add a copy to my classroom library.

Small Book – Big civilization

Just slightly over 4 inches, this small encyclopedia packs an impressive amount of knowledge for young readers. Before the age of the smartphones and Tablets (which can contain any book or magazine in existence) these pocket books were really very useful…and let’s face it, they still are. There are a lot of places that you won’t want to pack your devices, and this DK book will fit any pocket or purse.

Although its size has some advantages, it also has disadvantages. One of the main strengths of DK books is their pictures, photographs, maps and illustrations. And as you can imagine, in such a small book they are quite small indeed and much detail is lost.

It has 160 pages and a lot of information on each of those pages, but it is difficult to understand the evolution of this civilization and improvements in technique or architecture. This is due to the structure of the book; it has a small introduction to the different periods and then it has chapters regarding the daily life, society, agriculture, games, religion and rites, among many other issues…but they are completely generic! You won’t find the society of the Old Kingdom, or Middle kingdom, or Saite period, or the Ptolomaic…just Society. I am aware that Ancient Egypt was quite traditional and there were long periods of time without discernable changes, but this book takes it a little too far.

It also has some mistakes regarding dates among other issues. But it is a quite worthy and inexpensive book with nice small biographies of some of the most important pharaohs, maps, list of dynasties, etc.

While this is slightly busy visually, this is not as awkward to absorb as the sister volume I saw recently, on the Oceans. This takes us in handy double-paged spreads through everything about Egypt – the mummies, the talents of the scribes, the clothing and children's games, their natural history and their end. That latter is a weaker 'chapter' as it really needed more throughout on the history, but with our understanding of the whole civilisation improved by so much else it's hard to quibble. Apparently scientists (that feature here because this 1990s book has had a fresh updating recently) have resurrected an ancient Egyptian's voicebox, so the afterlife of these people is a lot more evident than some might imagine. They will always remain a topic for a good school lesson or two, and this will be very handy for students to pull off the shelves as a result, especially with the high pictorial rate appealing to the visual learner.

This book is a fun read since it has pictures and captions of all kinds. It shows kids the details in murals, the tombs, and tells them about the rituals these people had. I always enjoy learning about ancient cultures, so this was an easy read for me.

I am loving the DK publishing as well as the Eyewitness series. This one on Ancient Egypt is fantastic, the pictures of the real objects and statues are helpful in understanding and retaining information. In North America we learn more about Greek Mythology than Egyptian Mythology. This book as been great to learn more about the Egyptian Pharaoh's and other significant symbols in this mythology.

Knew almost everything in here as I've been teaching ancient Egypt for 9 years. Wish there were pages on individual pharaohs like Hatshepsut, Ramses II, or Cleopatra. Makes me want to visit Egypt still - especially the Museum in Cairo and Abu Simbel near the border with Sudan.

Misir mifologiyasıvə tarixi ilə əlaqədar qısa və öz biliklər oyrənmək üçün yaxşı kitabdır. Qısaca qədim Misirlilərin düşüncə tərzini öyrənmək istəyənlər üçün maraqlı bir giriş kitabı olduğunu düşünürəm...
