This intimate diary provides a rare opportunity to view a Thoroughbred nursery through the eyes of a family as they strive to breed, raise, and train winning racehorses. This updated edition includes an epilogue noting the farm's involvement with racing's superhero, Cigar, who was foaled and raised at Country Life Farm.
A book about family and horses and tracing the history of the writer's family and their story in the middle of breeding, raising and racing thoroughbred horses. It covers the history of this racing and the joy and heartbreak of being in the midst of all this while striving to keep a family farm running as suburbia gets closer and the economics of raising horses change almost daily. Daily glimpses of the owners, farm hands, vets, race tracks and people that inhabit this world.
This was a relaxing read and very insightful for me. I’ve considered having my own horses in the past and a lot of this was great food for thought in terms of how that would be done. The descriptions of the nature around Country Life farm are stunning. I also enjoyed the historical references to where the world was in the early 2000s. It really felt like stepping back in time.
