The Morrigna

Rate this book
Sure, I’ve got the whole psychic, badass chick with a sword thing down pat. But it’s my years spent as an interrogator for the Salem Preternatural Task Force that have me on high alert with a prickling awareness.
Something isn’t right.
Witches, werewolves, and vampires are commonplace in my world. Yet the darkness closing in is far more malicious. It seeks to writhe its way into my veins, and strip me of my powers one by one. My ability to heal rapidly won’t hold out forever. One of the demon battles this wicked puppet master has orchestrated will be my last, unless I can find a way to cut the ties binding us.
My name is Maurin Kincaide — and I won’t go down without a fight.

Fans of mysterious intrigue, thrilling detective work, and hints of sizzIing romance will flock to The Maurin Kincaide Series!

What I liked:

the politics of the supernatural world was interesting

the author dealt with the “insta-love” issue neatly!

the non-stop action, especially the battle scene at the end

What I didn’t like:

the beginning felt rushed- I wanted to be told a bit about Maurin before I was expected to like her

there was almost no mention of the history between the Morrigna & the goddess who grants Maurin powers.

An interesting world that I’d like to read more about.

This book was baffling. I felt like I'd been thrown into book three in the series with no backstory and it was very confused. We see Maurin interrogate someone but fail to get the psychic information because the person is too powerful so her boss suspends her without asking anything about what happened, tells her to 'get better' and she doesn't try to explain what happened or defend herself. What kind of police department do that??? There is no backstory or history to her 'crimes', what she needs help for or any kind of history to help this very bemused reader. I feel as if chunks of plot were missing! We get mentions of nightmares and witches and something happening on another case but it is not explored and is very disjointed. Every character is an asshat especially her partner who hangs up on her when she reports being stalked by the suspect. It is just poorly constructed, badly written, horrible characters and was a waste of time.

I received The Morrigna in return for an honest review as part of the tour hosted by Bewitching Book Tours. Maurin is human with the ability to see inside someone’s thoughts so working for the Preternatural Task Force as an interrogator works. Life is simple until she’s sucked into a supernatural battle between the Council and the triad. It’s her psychic abilities that have put her on the radar to the council hoping that she has what it takes to help them defeat Morrigna.

However being a human doesn’t help her when it comes to fighting the battle and it’s a good thing she’s not just a human after all but connected to a powerful goddess. Forced into the role as executioner and imbued with powers from the goddess Maurin will have to face off against the triad. Thankfully she won’t have to do it alone the council run by vampires, werewolves and witches will be there to back her up. Hopefully they will have what it takes to save her friends and defeat Morrigna before it’s too late.

I like Maurin she’s an interesting character who accepts her role as the executioner much better than I would have expected. Being dragged into a supernatural war against demons and gods where she has the powers of a goddess to protect her. I admit I wasn’t sure about the connection to Oberon since it felt a little insta love but it seems to work as the book progresses besides it’s not like he’s a demon or fallen angel. I’m curious to see how their relationship will play out in future book.

I’ve had this one on my kindle for a while but never seemed to get around to it till I saw the tour invite and just knew it was the time to check it out. I’m glad I did because Maurin lives in my favorite kind of a world where humans live among the supernatural even down the street from the vampires. The concept while not new, is unique and exciting with an all-out war of good vs evil protecting the unsuspecting humans. The Morrigna is a fast paced action packed story that keeps you on the edge of your seat till the very last page. I had a hard time putting it down and ended up staying late to finish because I had to know how it would all play out. The Morrigna is a perfect blended mystery that is filled with twists and turns as well as just enough romance. I really enjoyed the authors writing style the story flows smoothly from start to finish. Looking forward to starting the next book in the series.

The Morrigna by Rachel Rawlings
I'm Maurin Kincaide, a psychometric, and until a few days ago I was working for Salem's Preternatural Task Force as an interrogator. I cracked more cold cases and got more confessions than anyone else in the department. Of course that was before I traded in my badge for an ancient Celtic sword. Now, I'm the Special Liaison for the Council, the governing body of the Others, and I take my orders from witches, werewolves and vampires.

I didn't just make a career change though. I'm not the same person I was before. I'm stronger, I can heal from wounds that would kill a normal person. I'm developing latent psychic skills at a breakneck speed. Oh yeah, and it would seem that a Pagan goddess has taken permanent residence in my body and mind. Crazy thing is, I'm starting to feel normal, like this is who I'm supposed to be.

Of course, there are those who don't agree. Morrigan and her sisters for example. Actually, I'm pretty sure they'd like nothing more than to see me dead. And if I can't stop them and the demons they've raised, they just might get their wish.

My Review

Maurin works for the Police as an interrogator utilising her psyhic gift to aid her but when her powers become unreliable she is put on leave to allow her a chance to get to the bottom of it. When brought before the Council Maurin discovers more about the world and herself than she thought possible, suddenly she is pulled into a war that she never knew existed and finds that she may be the key to bringing it to an end. Talk about pressure!

Maurin is a likeable character, she makes mistakes while learning to control her developing powers and struggles to come to terms with the consequences of her actions. She remains human while surrounded by people who aren't, never entirely sure who to trust.

Rachel has created an interesting world full of sexy shifters, powerful witches and arrogant vampires who battle against gods & demons to keep the world safe. Rachel has placed her own spin on popular myths to bring her world to life. The Morrigna is a thoroughly enjoyable action packed tale full of intriguing characters who are just begging to have their stories told. I really enjoyed this one and I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment to find out what happens next!

If you enjoy slightly dark, fast paced and action packed Urban Fantasy then this is definitely for you! I'm giving it 5 out of 5 skulls :)

2.5 stars This one didn't really work for me but i cant put my finger on why. It has a snarky kickass heroine, loads of action and a reasonable plot so you would think it would be my jam. But mostly i was just skimming to get to the end. The 'romance' element takes instalove to a whole new level with nothing to base it on so i flat didnt care. Then there is the Council- headed by the most powerful supernaturals only they were completely useless. Just randomly moving from place to place being attacked and beaten with no counter plan.

It was ok. I did more skimming to the good parts more than anything. There was a lot of internal dialogue in this book. It seemed unwarranted and did nothing for the story. So just not for me and I won’t be moving forward in this series

Maurin Kincaide has spent the last few years as a psychometric for Salem’s Supernatural Task Force. She goes in when the regular interrogators are not getting anywhere, and with a simple touch has all the answers the police need. Lately, her powers have been unreliable- and while it seems she is getting stronger she is also losing control. After failing in her interrogation of Seamus O’Neill, a man thought to be responsible for an unfettered demon on the loose, Maurin finds herself placed on leave to get her powers under control. It is then that she finds there is much more going on in the supernatural community when she is enlisted by the Council. As the governing body of the supernatural community in Salem, the Council wants Maurin to use her powers to figure out why there are demons wreaking havoc before things get out of hand. There is something much darker on the horizon and if Maurin cannot discover how to harness her newfound powers, being suspended from her job will be the least of her problems.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Morrigna. Rawlings has a fluid writing style and Maurin is an incredibly developed character. The breakneck pace and mixture of Celtic folklore and magic make for an exciting debut that kept this reviewer engaged until the very end.

I absolutely loved the bad guys in this story–they pressed all of their advantages and made for truly impressive foes. I also found the politics between all the different supernatural groups handled masterfully. There is some very strong world-building that Rawlings fits into the narrative seamlessly. At the end I really wanted to know more about all of the characters, not just Maurin.

I think Maurin is a really interesting heroine. She is dealt some major blows in a very short amount of time, but manages to survive, generally with a sarcastic comment. I really appreciated what I found to be her incredibly realistic reaction to everything she has to deal with in The Morrigna. I am truly looking forward to her journey, especially when it comes to Oberon. This is a magical romance that I cannot wait to see play out. There is a perfect reason for the near-instantaneous attraction, but it is never over the top. He is still a little bit of a mystery, but I fully expect to learn more about him in coming books.

There are a few issues that mar The Morrigna. The pacing is very fast. Rawlings moves from major event to major event with very little breathing room, and while that does portray the loss of control Maurin is experiencing, it also makes for some choppy transitions that can be confusing to the reader. Pulling back on the pace would have easily moderated the awkward transitions and made for a smoother read. Additionally, because the story moves so fast, some of the emotional impact loses its punch.

Aside from that issue, which I fully expect to see Rawlings get a handle on as she moves forward in this series and her career, The Morrigna was a great opening to what I hope will be an entertaining series. She does not shy away from a large and complicated world, her characters are refreshingly realistic, and there is an underlying darkness that I find always makes for a enthralling series. I am very much looking forward to the next novel, Witch Hunt.

The Morrigna, Maurin Kincaide, Book #1

Author: Rachel Rawlings

Synopsis: I'm Maurin Kincaide, a psychometric, and until a few days ago I was working for Salem's Preternatural Task Force as an interrogator. Our Review [By LITERAL ADDICTION’s Bewitching Bella-Charity Costa]:
Morrigna is the 1st book in the Maurin Kincade series by Rachel Rawlings. It is a paranormal genre novel, which includes characters from all paranormal species vamps, weres, gods and witches all make up a cast of characters that leave us a little confused at the end of the book.
Morrigna starts off with our main character Maurin in her everyday life as a psychometric working for Salem's Preternatural Task Force as an interrogator. This book is set in present day but humans are aware of the existence of the supernatural. Maurine works with this task force to keep the humans safe from the paranormal. This day seems ordinary to Maurin till she interrogates someone that can see her mind instead of her just peeking into theirs for answers. This starts her whirlwind weekend in motion.
Without giving the whole story away Maurin discovers there's more to her than she ever realized and that she has been chosen to save the world. Over the course of a few days she realizes her world will never be the same.
I was left a little empty at the end of this book so many unanswered questions and a feeling of being lost by the time I was done. I would have loved to learn more about the characters so I could have been attached to them. I felt by the end of the book they were still all strangers to me.
I have read many books in this genre so I could see whee the author wanted to take us with the story but I couldn't help but think wow that came out of no where now I'm feeling like I have no clue what's going on.
I'm going to definitely read the second book in this series which comes out by the end of this year, before I write off the books, I'm hopping that in book 2 there will be a lot more clarification and we get the chance to go deeper with the characters and get all of our questions answered.

Overall, LITERAL ADDICTION Paranormal Book Club gives The Morrigna 3 Skulls.

I really enjoyed reading THE MORRIGNA finding it to be a book that I just didn't want to put aside even to sleep. I am really glad that I started reading it on a Saturday night. Ms. Rawlings did a really great job on the character of Maurin making her someone easy to relate with. She is a strong woman in some ways but boy does she have her insecurities. I also found the secondary characters to be rather interesting and they really helped to both flesh out the story and to add comedic relief where needed. There is one thing however...I would have really preferred to have Maurin's love interest fleshed out much more then he was.

This book is set in an interesting world and I would love to see more books in this series. Though I have to admit that after taking on an ancient Celtic Goddess of War, I am really not sure what would top that. Guess that I will have to wait and see.

I rate this book a 3.8 and recommend it to lovers of Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romances especially as this book seems to be a blend of both.

I absolutely LOVE this cover and was completely overjoyed when this book had a "free day" on Amazon. The author has a way of writing and pulling you into the story line, making you feel like you are there with the characters. There was more than one night that I had dreams about the book. The characters have their own distinct personalities, some you love to hate and some you love to love. It was so easy to fall in love with a few of the characters, rooting for them throughout the book. This is a very good start to the series and I can't wait to see what the author comes up with in book 2 :) I recommend this series to anyone who likes a good supernatural/paranormal read :)

1.5 stars.

This book needs A LOT OF WORK. Editing and better plot planning is what this book needs.

The beginning was rushed, the "fighting" and "war" was rushed.
Do you know what this book felt like? A bad action movie where things are exploding and people are fighting every 5 seconds with no real plot.

It was a chore to finish. The author had an okay premise but it was poorly executed.

the characters and plot was poorly developed and thus everything was disconnected and fragmented.

Not my cup of tea.

Good read

I picked up this story for a book club that I am in. The beginning was a bit slower that I would like to admit but once some action started to story picked up nicely. About chapter 6 it got better in my opinion and the chapters are very short. Would recommend to people looks for a paranormal story with some fighting.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)

DNF

Please put thoughts in italics, it makes it very confusing otherwise!

MC started off so well, but quickly became a complete doormat and an idiot.

Didn't explain what happened to her boss.

MC seems to be all combative when its not really needed, but then becomes miss manners when it'd be normal to be in 'fight' mode!

Sure, sure be all nice mannered to the jerk who had his minions

Edit = from reading others reviews it seems Jerk with minions is supposed to be the 'good' supernatural council... so the author for 'drama sake' made me drop the book without finishing because I wanted the demon to kill them....

The whole

First time read the author's work?: No

Will you be reading more?: No -- I'm done with this author after I read (via borrowing) the final book in the trilogy that I actually like of hers. She has other later books I've not read yet, and this series was her first, but still its put me off trying more of her works.

Would you recommend?: No -- unless you like idiot doormat MCs.

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

This is the second book in a row featuring a strong female protagonist, and the second book in a row I've really liked. For me this was a real page turner, I nearly stayed up all night to finish it. Maurin is a psychic with two gifts. She can tell what you are by touching you or something you've touched. A very useful skill in a world filled with werewolves, vampires, witches and other things that go bump in the night. Though everyone (everything?) is trying to get along, crime still happens and it helps to know what species your perp is. She also has hindsight, she can enter your mind and access your memories. No need to confess, I know what you did. She has a nice little job as a police consultant and if she's not happy, she's content. Then she tries to probe Seamus, a giant of a man who has the same barriers to psychic probing as Maurin and who is a stronger psychic than she is. Minutes later she's been kidnapped because the local Council of Others thinks she may be The Chosen, the reincarnation of an ancient goddess. Old gods are returning to unleash Armageddon and Maurin may be their only hope...or she may at least be bait. The book poses the question: What does happen to a god or goddess when humans no longer believe or worship them? Is Baal plotting a return? Will Osiris lay waste to the earth to force people to worship him? I really liked Maurin and enjoyed her story very much. I recommend this book as a fun and exciting ride into the occult.

This book was so much fun to read! The story was exciting and it was hard to put it down. Rachel Rawlings is a very talented author that sucks you in with an exciting storyline. I was glued to the pages as I read and I didn’t want to story to end, thank goodness it is a series.
Maurin started her day the same as every other day at work. She is a physic for the police department, as she can touch someone and see what their past holds. She has helped put away many criminals that way. As she read the person in question, he read her mind and told her he was innocent. Wait! He read her mind and talked back? That’s right! He was one of her! Maurin always knew she was very different from everybody else and she became antisocial because of it.
Now Maurin and a new friend was forced to go to see a man that is very well known in town for his power and money. Why would he want me, Maurin asked. Come to find out, she was the key piece to a major plan. A war goddess wanted to take over the world and she had to eliminate Maurin to do so. What? Why? She is a mere physic. Well the story really get good from here, oh and exciting and action and mystery and a hole lot more. So you see why I couldn’t put the book down. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

DNF at about 50%. First of all, the narrator's voice is very annoying.
Second, there are a ton of characters and it's very difficult to keep track of them.
Third - after almost half a book from one POV, you suddenly get the POV of someone else - and not because it's necessary.
Fourth, ALL of the characters seem to be incompetents, not just the heroine.
Fifth - I kept trying to find reasons to be intrigued by the story, but it reached a point where I stopped giving a damn.
Spoilers: the heroine is a very annoying employee of the human authorities that are forced to deal with paranormals. She is supposed to be a psychometric, but her powers seem to go out of control. The para council makes her touch some things that bring some demon/god to this plane of existence. Then, she discovers she's a reincarnation of a goddess and gets some extra powers. Apparently, she's supposed to help humanity fight against the re-emergence of the old gods. I gave up on the story when the POV switched to some untrained witch who is attacked by hellhounds or something. I just didn't care enough to deal with the five annoyances I listed above anymore.

I wasn’t sure what to make of this tale in the beginning. Maurin Kincaide is a savvy, street-smart, trash-talking female; a psychometric by profession, working for Salem’s Preternatural Task Force (SPTF) as an interrogator. Her sassy nature reminded me of Kim Harrison’s Rachel Morgan character. Maurin’s paranormal abilities were on the fritz and she wasn’t sure why. She would soon leave her confusing, hum-drum life behind to join the paranormal community in a war against the Morrigna. The Morrigna; vampires called them The Triad, others knew them as “The Morrigan” or “the three Morrigna” (sisters). As we dabble in Irish mythology, the plotline becomes more complex and much more interesting. Maurin is heir to Celtic prophecy, discovering past lives as she gains newly acquired power. I like the story, although I feel the end battle is a bit overcooked. I’m unclear as to where this is going as a series, as this volume could be a stand-alone novel. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

The h is super annoying. She constantly refers to her being ostracized, or not being accepted by magic people and yet there is no evidence of the that. She becomes surrounded by magical people who all seem to be okay with her and some seem to really like her. There’s no depth to her backstory to make it seem authentic.

She constantly does something and then complains that people are saving her from whatever she is doing. She frequently gets outraged over things that aren’t the big of a deal and vice versus is really wimpy over things that she should make a stand on. It’s really annoying. For example she’s forced to do something that causes something that could have hurt her and when the person who orchestrated it apologized she was like fine no biggie. When in fact it was a buggy. Even worse apology was the man explaining why he did it and not really apologizing. Yet when the leaders of the entire group are meeting she says super bratty things and gets her ass handed to her.

Really trying to stick with this book but the mc makes me want to punch 👊 her in the mouth her inner dialog is a 2 year old throwing a tantrum and she has the worst personality she snaps and throws angry tantrums non-stop plus she is a coward. She has very childish morals and outlook on life and is obvious to the supernatural world she barely has a toe in she thinks she is a human so she looks down on the paranormals she's a known it all and knows nothing the book is good if you can get past her foolishness. DNF I just didn't like the mc

This book started out a little slow for me but once I got into it I really liked it. I loved that Maurin is a human with Others gifts. She is not experienced in the Others world and she has to work hard to catch up and find her place. I felt like she was a very realistic character and her growth followed a very realistic timeframe. Rachel Rawlings kept me guessing until the end. I can't wait to get started with the next book in the series.

Kill me now

This was a never ending book that dragged on an quite often lost focus. It was repetitive. And over all boring. I'm sorry I'm being so mean but I wish I had never started this book I was bored to death and frustrated because the rants were so long I ended up daydreaming and/falling asleep.

Just not good

DNF, why did the spelling of Morrigna/Morrigan keep changing? Why was every name in the book impossible to pronounce? Why was one chapter in the 3rd person when the rest of the book was in the first person? Why was the MC hanging all over Oberon? Find an editor.

Heroine tended to be whiny at times. And things were repeated a little too much. Liked the play between her and Oberon. Wish it had been more developed.

The Morrigna

Good mix of vamps, wolf's, witches, and more. It's like they could be a friend, neighbor , some one you see every day. Two thumbs up.
