Ólafur's writings focus on the revolutionary changes which took place in Icelandic society in the 20th century, with urban development and mass migration from the countryside into towns and villages. His trilogy about Páll Jónsson (Gangvirkið/The Mechanism, Seiður og hélog/Sorcery and Will'o' the Wisp and Drekar og smáfuglar/Dragons and Little Birds) is among the leading works of Icelandic realist literature in the 20th century.
He was the first Icelander to win the Nordic Council Literary Award, for his books of verse Að laufferjum (At the Leaf-Ferry) and Að brunnum (By the Spring) in 1976.
