An excellent and easy read about modern Jewish history with great case studies of the catch 22 that faces minority groups: willfully assimilate and become a sellout, despised by kin and country, or resist and face isolation and discrimination?

A complex but important book on Jewish assimilation. Erudite and well argued, but not the easiest read. Nevertheless it was well worth the effort as the author makes many things clear which I have never read elsewhere. Although written in the 1990s it is still remarkably prescient
