Rate this book
Taking place in the 1760s, this historical novel is based on legendary events that led up to the virtual demise of the once-powerful Illinois Indian nation. The relationship between Yellow Hawk, a half-breed Illiniwek warrior, and Dawn of the Potawatomies, is frowned upon by his tribe and hers, and she is reluctant to commit herself to him. A constant problem for Yellow Hawk is Shattuc, his antagonist since childhood, who resents his mixed blood and would like nothing more than to have his scalp.

This was a great book! I very much enjoyed not only the story line of Yellow Hawk and his rise through the Illiniwek, but the references to the local area.
