A Scottish castle. A summer escape. A love story that could change her life forever...

It's always been expected of Jessamine Byron to settle down with someone her family would approve of. But Jess is tired of living a lie.

When her so-called perfect life as the Countess of Cheshire goes up in flames, and her marriage in tatters, Jess packs her bags and flees to her family's Scottish ancestral home, Rosemire Castle...

...and runs into ruggedly handsome and surly gardener, Mac Douglas. To her surprise, Mac doesn't recognise her as the infamous lady of the house. Meeting someone who has no idea of the life she's left led, instead seeing and accepting her for the woman she really is, feels like a breath of fresh air.

As the summer unfolds, with Mac by her side, Jess finally discovers what it's like to find a community to belong to and be free to love whoever you want. But sometimes the past can't be outrun. And when her two worlds unexpectedly collide, can Jess find the courage to take charge of her own future?

Escape this summer to the Scottish Highlands where the scent of heather is in the air. This absolutely heart-warming and uplifting LGBTQ+ romance will charm fans of Julie Shackman, Jessica Redland and Donna Ashcroft.

' I really loved this book . This was such a heart-warming and lovely romance . I honestly can't recommend it enough ' Reader review, 5*

'A beautiful book - it's heart-warming [and] funny . I loved the variety of characters, with plus-sized and LGBTQ+ representation . Not just a romance, but a story of fostering, finding family and discovering who you are' Reader review 5*

Count on the Countess: Romance with all the feels
Not all is what it looks like - on many levels - in this enchanting romance set at a Scottish castle and Bowdler has fun playing with quite a few romance clichés and our expectations. The romance is very well-written, has all the feels and then some. I loved the posh vs. working class, English vs. Scottish vibe woven into the story.
But underneath the romance it was great to find some deeper threads. The idea of found family is prominent and tugs at our heartstrings and the highlands are many-coloured with queer folks in surprising places (I strongly believe Gem needs her own story!!).
The writing is very visual and a total joy to read.
BTW: After Bowdler‘s Honeymoon For One I got the ARC without reading the blurb because I thought this would be another f/f romance. Didn‘t regret it for a minute but quite enjoyed the queer extravaganza unfolding.

Thanks for the ARC. The review is left voluntarily.

Wow. Wowowow. I definitely wasn’t expecting any part of this story. It was one I had borrowed because it was included in the lgbtq+ genre at the library, but I’d put off starting it because I had wrongly assumed it was going to be fetishy or extra heteronormative. I literally couldn’t have been more wrong and I’m SO happy I got to experience it.
I listened to the entire 15 hour audiobook in one day, and steadily cried through the last 4 hours of it, which is impressive since my meds make it hard for me to cry.

I don’t want to get too spoiler-y, but the kid comes out as non-binary halfway through, and it was handled so beautifully. I loved that we didn’t see any trauma around it and that the book flawlessly switched pronouns without any fuss. I loved hearing the narrator switch so perfectly as well (I know that’s their job but whatever)

Anyway. The summary is that a (kind of disgraced) duchess moves into this castle that her great*6 grandparents bought AGES ago and everyone in the town is resentful towards the family because of the damage that was done when they got the castle. The gardener is this sweet sweet man who was in and out of foster homes growing up, and now he is fostering this preteen.
Super healthy displays of masculinity and queerness and identities. Lots of sweet family moments and tender parenting.

God and the EPILOGUE and Aaron’s card???????? I SOBBED.

I often get tired of the formula for romance novels. This one was no exception. Someone has a secret they refuse to tell the other. When it comes out person number 2 is angry and they break up… Even still, this one was unique enough to hold my attention I enjoyed it.

Rachel does a wonderful job with character and story development. I enjoyed getting to know all the characters and the twists and turns of the characters. This romance is well written and multi-faceted and brought joy into the reading of it. The Scottish highlands are so important to the feeling that the book brings, full of adventure and people that I would love to have real conversations with in person. It shows how love can be all around in any way or shape. I highly recommend this read.

I discovered Rachel Bowdler when I read Honeymoon for One (which I loved). So I was pleased to get my hands on Summer at the Scottish Castle.

I really loved this book. I love the LGBTQ+ representation. I love all the characters, especially Mac and Arran. I love the setting, at a Scottish Castle and village. My only frustration was with Jess not telling Mac about her title. It’s totally understandable, but I couldn’t have done it!

The plot was really enjoyable, plenty of romance, and found family, and people choosing what’s right for them. I loved Jess’s storyline especially.

This was such a heartwarming and lovely romance, I honestly can’t recommend it enough.

I was given a copy of this book, my opinions are my own.

Oh I absolutely loved this book. It’s all about love and acceptance with others and yourself. Found families are the best and I love how this book highlights some of the positives about fostering and kinda showed the stress of it as well. I really enjoyed how they were excepting of everyone being their authentic selves. As a mother of teens I definitely get trying to be supportive of your children and making sure they are happy and healthy both mentally and physically.

This is such a fun read with lovable and relatable characters. I was in love with them from the start. The writing is easygoing and fast-paced and I love the banter between Jessa and Mac. Definitely add this to your list, it's a perfect spring/summer read.

At first I thought this would be a typical rom com book..Boy meets girl etc...But I have absolutely loved enjoyed reading it. Telling the story of Jess who's returned to her inherited castle to hide after a tricky time. Enter Mac and his foster child Arran...Jess has to hide her title from Mac and this causes many problems. I admired the way LGBTQ+ came into the story and 3 main characters had their own stories. Gem was a true character throughout. A lovely read !

Oh dear - what a lot of awful people there were in this book. I really couldn’t buy into Jess’s hang ups. She ‘d allowed her ex husband to walk all over her, abuse her and tell lies to a reporter and she did nothing. The mother was a caricature - unremittingly awful, with not one single redeeming feature. Jess just lay down and let her mother walk all over her, and in spiked shoes.
How had she managed to get to the age she was, without learning how to deal with the shitty people around her, was a total mystery. But she could still do her charity work!

HAmish and Gem were just two of the characters who responded to Jess as if she were the wicked witch of the west, just because of her family. In reality, the villagers would be excessively polite to aristocracy, regardless of their real, feelings, rather than uncouth, rude gits as depicted here, because Highlanders are inherently polite. This was a fairy tale version of Scotland and bore no relationship to reality.

Sorry this had the bones of a brilliant story but never really lived up to its promise. I really love Mac and Arran’s story. Lovely!

However, Mac’s continued refusal to forgive Jess for lying to him about who she really was - just didn’t fit the person he seemed to be. A black moment for the sake of a black moment.

This wasn’t my cup of tea I’m afraid. But it’s well written and I’m sure many people will like it. 2.5 stars

I’m not usually a romance reader, but I’m glad I stepped out of my comfort zone for Summer at the Scottish Castle. It was the perfect holiday read and defied a lot of my expectations for the genre.

The novel is familiar in all the best ways, featuring all the best elements and of course the cosy feel of a good romance story. Particularly charming though are the novel’s moments of self-awareness. Romantic scenes are broken up by moments of humour – clumsy mistakes, minor weather disasters and charmingly authentic dialogue. This serves to give the novel and the romance it features an authentic, familiar and all the more heartwarming feel. Rather than unattainably perfect, the romance feels realistic, not to mention hard-won and well-deserved by the time it reaches its happy ending.

Beyond the romance, the setting of the story and its complete cast of characters also gave the novel a really well-rounded feel. I particularly enjoyed the care and attention with which the fostering/adoption storyline was handled. A plotline that could have been relegated to the background was instead made to feel truly central to the story. Arran was treated essentially as one of the main characters, and their experiences were never overlooked in favour of the central romance plot. They weren’t made out to be some picture perfect poster child, an accessory to a romantic dream – they were real, which meant sometimes being difficult and having doubts.

As I mentioned, this novel also defied a lot of my expectations for the romance genre. I really enjoyed how the queer identities of the characters were included and explored in the story, despite their being in what appears a ‘straight’ relationship. The novel did a wonderful job of showing how the characters’ queer identities remain not only valid but important to them while they’re in this relationship. Jess continues to do important work with LGBT charities and Mac puts a great deal of work into making sure he is creating an open and accepting environment for his queer child. Mac also was just a pleasant surprise as a male romantic lead who succeeds in being charming and appealing without falling into toxic masculine traps. As I said, I don’t read a lot of romance, so maybe this is more common than I thought, and it’s given me the confidence that maybe I could enjoy some more novels of this genre.

Overall, this was a lovely read. I’ve given it five stars, and I hope to read more from this author soon.

Võib-olla oleks see sobivam olnud sellise suvise rannaraamatuna.

It was such a sweet book! But I think it wasn't the right time for me to read it. I couldn’t get into it and also I didn't feel a connection with MCs. My favorite character was Rufus the cat 😀 Okay, I liked Arran too, who is Mac’s foster son.

I mean it was a cute book about how to find love and move on with life after going through several difficult things, but I don’t know… Maybe it’s more suitable for summer and/or beach read? It was kind of slow for me as well.

But I do love the diversity of characters in this book - Mac is bi, Jessamine is pan and Arran prefers they/them pronouns. And I loved all the support Mac gave to Arran. Perfect parent!

I strongly dislike miscommunication tropes tho… I knew what happens and how it all ends, but sometimes I found myself reading diagonally. Would I recommend it? Yes, if you’re looking for a cute book which doesn't require much thinking and you just want to enjoy simple read.

Maybe I would have liked it better, if Jess just told the truth sooner? We’ll never know 😀 But I actually started to like the book much better after the secret was out and Jess finally (!!!) confronted her mother, but as it happened so late, I added only half of the star for it.

✨I was gifted the ebook for book tour in Instagram✨

Love is in the air at the old Scottish castle.

I enjoyed reading “Summer at the Scottish Castle” by Rachel Bowdler, a modern-day romance in an old Scottish castle. The character Jessamine, also known as “Jess”, a countess, is trying to hide her identity from the locals as well as the tabloids. She has had a privileged life but it’s suffocating her. After living in a gilded cage, being married to an abuser, and the tabloids favoring the abuser over her, she seeks out living incognito as best she can at her family castle in Scottland where she meets her new love interest, Mac.

Jessamine’s mother unleashes her own verbal tirades onto Jessamine. Jessamine was under the watchful eye of her mother, constrained by her title, and never had control over her own life. Jessamine grows tired of her mother’s verbal tirades and demands. Giving into her mother’s demands has not brought her happiness. Being pansexual, she did not fit the royal mold.

Jess wanted her own identity. She found her usefulness in charity work for the LGBTQ+ community. Jess, Mac, and Mac’s foster son Arron, become friends. Jess feels less constrained and more comfortable with who she is, especially after Mac discloses that he is bisexual.

Jess’ mental health flourishes after divorcing her abuser. Jess grew emotionally and psychologically after divorcing her verbally abusive husband, which gave her the strength to defend herself against her mother and take control of her own life.

Mac is dedicated to raising his foster son, Arran, allowing Arron to define who he is within his own gender. Mac puts Arron first above his new relationship with Jess. Maturity at its best. Arran is happy living with Mac and has accepted Jessamine into his life.

Mac has his own emotional roller coaster from his past. His life has been filled with letdowns from being a foster child, and past heartbreaks. His relationship with Jess becomes intense until he finds out she lied to him about who she really is and who her family is. Jess does battle in his own head about being able to forgive her.

The castle too, once owned by Jessamine’s grandfather, has its own secrets. Jess and Mac are sure they uncovered their family secrets, which by today’s standards would not be taboo. The characters came to life, and it was easy to empathize with each character.

My Opinion

Usually when I take weeks to finish a book it is because I am not enjoying the book, in this case it was because I wasn't ready for it to end. This was such a lovely romance with some much deeper topics. Jessamine has never really felt like she has had a family - can she finally find somewhere she belongs as she hides out in her castle.

I really enjoyed Honeymoon For One, so I selected this book without reading the blurb - I was very pleasantly surprised as this was such a joy to read. It is hard for me to write about this emotional read without giving away any spoilers. So all I am going to say is that I loved this book and it should definitely be on your want to read list.

Jessamine Byron, is the Countess of Cheshire. She retreats to Rosemire Castle in the Scottish highlands after her marriage of four years falls apart in a very public and messy divorce. She owns the castle and has private quarters there but it is part of the Scottish Castle Association for touring. One day she meet Mac Douglas, the grumpy gardener and introduces herself as Jess. He thinks she is a tour guide. With Mac she feels seen for herself and not her title. She takes interest in the local village fete and enjoys mixing with the locals. (Some know who she is some don’t.) She also meets the angry twelve year old Aaran a foster child that lives with Mac.

This is a sweet contemporary novel (I wasn’t sure from the blurb and throwing in titled characters). Mac and Jess are wonderful as they open up to each other. The side characters of Petra, Jess’s assistant, Meg who works in the pub, and Mac’s adoptive parents all add to the story and importance family of choice. Throw in Rufus, a three legged cat and I’m ready to sign up to visit this fictional village. There is positive LGBTQIA representation especially with Mac’s simple and quiet support of Aaran. It adds to the story but isn’t as focal to the plot as I expected since this is promoted as LGBTQIA.

The cover is so charmingly cute I almost skipped over selecting the book thinking it was geared for YA’s or younger. I also didn’t realize I’ve read the author’s previous novel Honeymoon For One (Nov 2022). I’m happy to recommend for readers who enjoy slow and gentle, minimal angst romances. There are no big surprises and nothing goes beyond kissing on the page. The setting and characters make this memorable for me. Thank you to NetGalley and Embla Books for the ARC and I’m leaving a voluntary review. (3.5 Stars)

Summer at the Scottish Castle by Rachel Bowdler is a charming and enjoyable read, perfect for a light summer escape. The story follows Jessamine Byron, a countess who, after her marriage falls apart, seeks refuge at her ancestral home, Rosemire Castle. There, she encounters the quiet and handsome gardener, Mac Douglas, and begins a journey of self-discovery that is both heartfelt and engaging. The narrative beautifully captures the feeling of starting over and finding oneself again, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish countryside.

While the overall story is a very pleasant and easy-to-read tale, there is one particular element that doesn't quite land. The inclusion of a queer relationship feels underdeveloped and somewhat detached from the main plot. It comes across as if it were added without being fully integrated into the narrative, making it feel forced and lacking the depth it deserves. It’s a missed opportunity, and a more thoughtful approach to this subplot would have made it a much more meaningful part of the book.

Despite this, the true strength of the novel lies in the evolution of its protagonist, Jessamine. Her journey of growth is the most compelling part of the story. We witness her transformation from a woman defined by her circumstances into someone who finally realizes her own worth and desires. Her courage to stand up for herself and assert her independence, especially against her family and her mother, is incredibly satisfying and makes her a truly admirable character. This powerful sense of empowerment is what ultimately makes the book a worthwhile read.

Jessamine Byron, is the Countess of Cheshire and she’s fled to her castle in the Scottish highlands following a really rough time due to her messy divorce and the media portraying her as someone she is not.
One day she meets the handsome Mac Douglas, the grumpy gardener for the castle and introduces herself as Jess. Mac believes she’s a tour guide and is unaware of her title or who she really is.
For the first time in forever, Jess begins to make connections with the community around her, with Mac and his foster child Aaran and she feels that she can make a difference.
Will Jess tell Mac the truth about her title and her family and will they be able to continue with their budding romance?
Just as things start to fall perfectly in place for Jess and the whole village the nosy journalist who wrote salacious stories about Jess and her divorce is sniffing around – will the fairy tale end in tragedy?

This is a sweet contemporary novel which isn’t very racy so definitely suitable to read at work on a lunch break.
As well as Jess and Mac, there’s other characters we get to know including her assistant Petra, Mac’s adoptive parents, Gemma Mac’s friend and owner of the local pub and members of the local committee including grumpy Hamish!
There is positive LGBTQIA representation especially with Mac’s simple and quiet support of Aaran.

The plot was really enjoyable, plenty of romance, and found family, and people choosing what’s right for them.

This was such a heartwarming and lovely romance.

3.5 rounded up.

The countess and the gardener, only he has no idea who she is…

After a completely BS scandal, all Jess wants is to escape to her Highlands castle and hide away from the world in peace. It would be WAY better if no one knew she was there, especially since everyone in the village hates her family. So instead of Jessamine, Countess of Cheshire, she’s just plain old Jess.

And she meets Mac, who’s gruff (and sexy) on the outside, but kind, warm and loving all the way around. Mac is the passionate estate gardener who adores the grounds and flowers, and also is devoted to his 12-year-old foster son, Arran. Jess and Mac notice the attraction, but it takes a while to get going, and going. All the while, Jess keeps her secret…

I mostly loved the book. I adore Mac—what a giving and unselfish person who cares so much about everyone else, especially Arran. I understand Jess too, and why she wanted to keep her identity secret, but it goes WAY too far, and so much of the book is spent obsessing over it. She has so many chances to be honest and chickened out, and seriously, how would Mac not have found out? I would have rated the book over a 4 if the secrets and lies hadn’t dragged out so long.

Now, if only I could go off to live in a castle in the Scottish Highlands!

Amidst a post-divorce scandal, Countess Jessamine Byron seeks solace and time away from the hubbub by spending the summer at her family’s castle in Scotland. It is there that she quickly meets Mac, a gardener on the grounds. When he fails to initially identify who she is, Jessamine keeps up the alias of ‘Tour Guide Jess’, as they get to know more about each other.

As a fan of the Scottish highlands in general, I loved the details and feel of the land around the characters. Fort Aileen was the quaint and idyllic small town opposite of the castle. While I thoroughly enjoyed the characterization of Jess, Mac, and Arran, I found some characters to fall flat at their stereotypes, particularly Jess’s mother.

The story arc was fairly predictable, but it was still a pleasure to read. I understand Jess’s sexuality was a key part of who she is (and I appreciate the accurate representation and bias); however, it didn’t feel as consequential to the story as I thought it might be. At times, the pacing was a bit slow and I wanted higher stakes (yes, I have heard some stories aren’t angst fuelled dramas), but that’s probably just a preference.

I was on the fence between 3 and 4 stars, but bumped up the rating as the story delivered exactly what it sought out to do. I received an ARC from EmblaBooks through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

“He knew as certainly as he knew how to breathe that she was it for him. That he was hers if she wanted him.”

This book was such a lovely read! When Jessamine, Countess of Cheshire, gets divorced and her ex-husband ensures she gets lots of negative press, she retreats to her family’s castle in Scotland to regroup. As she becomes part of the local community and grows closer to handsome gardener Mac, Jess discovers who she wants to be going forward. Obviously things can’t be quite that straight forward as the community struggle to accept her after her family’s past actions and Jess has lied about her identity in an attempt to fly under the radar.

This is a cute tale of personal growth as Jess confronts the expectations placed upon her and the rumours about her in the press. She is an extremely likeable character and I was fully invested in her story. I also loved the plus-sized rep and body positivity, with Jess embracing her body shape and being written as curvy, beautiful and sexy.

Mac is a complex love interest who, behind all of the initial grump, might be one of the sweetest male love interests I’ve read in a book in a long time. His storyline was really interesting and he totally stole my heart.

This one is chock-full of LGBTQ+ representation, including both of the main characters and lots of members of the wider community. This was embedded so well and I would love to see more romance books including this 🙌🏻🏳️‍🌈

Summer at the Scottish Castle was well-written, romantic, and a really pleasant read 🥰

Countess of Cheshire, Jessamine Byron is hiding out in her Scottish castle after the drama surrounding her divorce blows up in London. She meets Mac in her castle garden and loves that he doesn’t know who she is. As just ‘Jess’ she gets to know Mac and his family and she grows to love this new her without a title but she’s still hiding her true identity.
This was a cute and cozy romance and I’ve really enjoyed this as well as the previous book I’d read by Bowdler. I will admit I misread this blurb though and thought this was wlw romance like her last one. Though it does have a lot of characters that are part of the queer community the romance is m/f and I’m not sure I would have picked it if I had realized that but I’m glad I did as it was a cute story. Bowdler did a great job building up each character and their relationship. There were some cute side characters including Arran who added so much to their family unit. If you’re looking for a cute, cozy slow burn this is the one to pick up.

This was a beautiful story and a wonderful summer read. I thought it was heartwarming, humorous with some emotional moments (pack the tissues just in case you need them, but I cry at anything emotional)

This is a contemporary slow burn romance with a really enjoyable storyline I loved the found family aspect, especially people choosing what’s best for themselves and finding who they are. I really appreciated the variety of characters, especially the main character representation of both LGBTQ+ and plus sized, but the fact that these aren’t just relegated to supporting roles is what made me most happy.

All the characters were engaging, well developed and you really connected with them. The story was a lovely and steady pace, building to such a lovely and fitting end. The beautiful and descriptive imagery of Scotland is just amazing, as someone who loves it and has been many times I can say it’s so accurate and just adds so much atmosphere to a lovely romance.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

A Scottish castle. A summer escape. A love story that could change her life forever...

Jess - aka Jessamine Byron, Countess of Cheshire - has just watched her perfect life go up in flames. After a messy divorce, she packs her bags and flees to her family's ancestral home, Rosemire Castle, in the remote Scottish Highlands.

When she runs into ruggedly handsome and surly gardener, Mac Douglas , in the castle grounds - accidentally messing up his flower beds, no less - Jess's summer takes an unexpected turn.

This book was a lovely light romance with a really positive LGTBQ+ byline. Both main characters identity as LGBTQ+ and it's supported all the way through.

Jess loves all things about her home in the Scottish castle, including not many people knowing her true identify as the Countess of Cheshire. Mac doesn't know who she is and she's so happy for him to know just her, without the titles. Although it's bound to come out, she wants to hope that he will see her for who she really is.

My only gripe would be that it was a little long winded.

Overall a really good read. Xx
