In short, this is a thorough overview of the American Civil War, complete with original pictures and random facts. My copy has three sleeves of lithographs of original documents such as telegrams and Lincoln's speeches. Those in and of themselves are completely cool!
This more or less gives an organized look into the Civil War. I cannot say that it is unbiased; it appears to l ran more toward the North. At the same time, the South isn't necessarily slandered.
I appreciated the organization of topics. Not only does the book cover the main battles, but it also explores espionage, navy, and other events and people during the war.
Amazingly, for a war book, I didn't come across any words that I wanted to cross out. It would make a great coffee table book (okay, besides perhaps a few pictures of prisoners and dead soldiers, which, given the replication, they are blurry and not in great detail). It is a good introduction to the Civil War.

A great overview of the Civil War! Lots of info and cool, removable reprinted documents of import to the war.

This literally IS an experience! It is a journey, an adventure, a tour of the horrors of the battlefield and an intimate peek into the private lives of great leaders and brave soldiers alike.
I have never experienced anything like this. It was a gift and GOD BLESS the friend that bestowed it upon me and blessed me with it. I must confess, I am absolutely without a clue as to have to describe it or give it an actual review or even BEGIN to convey to an interested party what this package contains. For, that is what this IS, it is a package, not simply a book. It contains audio CD's and video DVD's, Maps and battlefield maps, journal excerpt and letters (copies of course, but they even went to the trouble of aging the paper to give a feel of authenticity), the amazing genius' that put forward this concept went into an amazing amount of detail to present the documents and enclosures that you find tucked away in compartments and sleeves throughout the book in such a way as to lend true authenticity and make you feel as if you as holding in your hand an actual handwritten letter from "Marse Lee" (an affectionate term his troops used referring to General Robert E. Lee) and it WILL send a shiver up your spine and cause your hands to tremble as your eyes tear up.
Being as I cannot give an actual accounting or review of this literary masterpiece, I will merely state that ANY student of history, any historian of the War Between the States, The War of Northern Aggression or the Civil War, according to your perspective; if you study this particular period in history you will enjoy this book more than I have the power to articulate and it will touch your soul in ways that none but you yourself could possibly imagine. Go out and purchase one for yourself; nay, RUN to wherever you might find one and tell everyone that might possibly be kind enough to make a gift of one to you, do what you have to do, but I hope you can find one to enjoy as much as I have enjoyed mine.

I'm a civil war nerd so I would have been shocked if this had gotten a rating below 5 stars, to be honest. This was a great overview of the war and even went over some little known things (like spies!). The interactive elements really brought this book to life and made it that much more entertaining and easy to connect with. I would recommend this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
