Akira Toriyama (鳥山明) was a Japanese manga artist and character designer. He first achieved mainstream recognition for creating the popular manga series Dr. Slump, before going on to create Dragon Ball (his most famous work) and acting as a character designer for several popular video games such as the Dragon Quest series, Chrono Trigger, and Blue Dragon. Toriyama came to be regarded as one of the most important authors in the history of manga with his works highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration. He earned the 1981 Shogakukan Manga Award for best shōnen/shōjo manga with Dr. Slump, and it went on to sell over 35 million copies in Japan. It was adapted into a successful anime series, with a second anime created in 1997, 13 years after the manga ended. His next series, Dragon Ball, would become one of the most popular and successful manga in the world. Having sold 260 million copies worldwide, it is one of the best-selling manga series of all time and is considered a key work in increasing manga circulation to its peak in the mid-1980s and mid-1990s. Overseas, Dragon Ball's anime adaptations have been more successful than the manga and are credited with boosting anime's popularity in the Western world. In 2019, Toriyama was decorated a Chevalier of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for his contributions to the arts. In October 2024, Toriyama was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
Action-packed. This book is the all-out fight between both Goku and Vegeta versus Granolah. Yes, it is great that new power levels are reached on all sides, but I really like that battle tactics are also used. Not many words are necessary, just an all-out fight with a revelation at the end of the book. If I had one complaint, it is that it is not in colour, so I have to rely on the characters calling out their battle form colours.
EN I must admit that Granolah wasn’t a character I liked when he was first introduced. In fact, overall, I didn’t particularly care for the new characters in this arc. However, that has changed quite a bit, and especially in this volume, Granolah proved to be an incredible character.
This volume is almost entirely dedicated to the battle between Granolah, Son Goku, and Vegeta — and it may well be one of the most spectacular fights in the entire series, which says a lot.
A word of appreciation also for Toyotaro, a mangaka who perhaps doesn’t receive the attention he deserves due to the shadow of the legendary Akira Toriyama. Even so, Toyotaro is an extraordinary illustrator, someone who managed to take Toriyama’s style and make it even more impressive, especially during the battles.

Action, action, and oh yeah more action, in my opinion this novel tops the Moro fight and is right up there with the universe tournament arcs climactic end. The classic fighting and tag teaming between the original dynamic fighting duo was incredible and it shows Granolahs real power and prowess to maintain the fight and confrontation with the likes of both of them and keep on going. Don’t even get me started on vegetal purple ultra god of destruction ego mode, that fits him and his ruthless never give up personality just so perfectly and the way him and goku are evolving in their own paths finally is just what I’ve been hoping to see for a long time coming. 4.5/5
An action-packed volume allowing Goku and Vegeta to explore their new skills against the strongest foe to ever exist *sigh*. The volume ends on a dull cliffhanger that just makes you realize how ridiculous the premise of their battle against Granolah was in the first place.
A decent amount of drama on this volume. Granolah and Goku’s battle goes Granolah’s way and even Vegeta has trouble facing him. As both Vegeta and Granolah continue to evolve during their fights, we learn that Bardock has a connection to Granolah!
Goku and Vegeta also learn that they’ve been manipulated by Oil and Macki. Honestly… all of this could have been solved by just talking, guys…
Action Packed! Great Art as usual. But the evolution of the story felt stretched, forced and lackluster so they could all fight. The fight itself was pretty cool tho. Ultimately, The cliffhanger makes up for the one note dialogues, it was brilliant. Although, I wish they took more of a in-depth complex execution of this story point, I am still very much looking forward to the next volume!
Eh, whatever, I feel this arc has improved a wee bit, at least for this volume (I know it will shit itself next volume, so I can't even bother crossing my fingers...). The key, I think, was when I was reading the Son Goku versus Granolah fight and they were flying through trees, and I thought to myself how few trees there were in canon Z, but how many there were in the non-canon '90s movies. And I realized: Granolah the Survivor could actually make for a decent little movie, if Toei still did that. I mean, it won't work now, when movies are a chance for Toriyama himself to advance the story, but if we were still shitting out the yearly direct-to-VHS forty-minute flick, this could be alright. Things like the Tullece, Juusan-gou, and Bojack movies usually just play around with slices-of-life comedy for five or ten minutes before the bad guys are introduced and everyone takes turns fighting the sub-bosses before the Big Bad shows up. I could easily imagine a movie with Granolah targeting Vegeta and Goku and fighting for like fifteen minutes while the Heeters do shit in the background, before Gas takes center stage in the back half.
Ultra Ego looks silly, but I think I can dig the basic concept; Vegeta gets stronger by tanking attacks, which is something like an update on how Zenkai boosts used to work. Here, Vegeta need not waste time recovering from fatal wounds, and instead immediately reaps the benefits upon taking damage. And I guess it's cute that Vegeta is a more traditional "tank" whereas Goku's Ultra Instinct makes him a "dodge-tank."
I guess it's also kind of cool the manga allows for the cast to do new techniques. I forgot what Goku did in his fight against Granolah that impressed me, but I do remember Vegeta doing a Freeza-like "Death Ball"-type technique.
Mixed feelings on Goku using UI with Blue. It makes sense, kind of, but undermines the UI transformation, in part because the silver form is explicitly named as Perfected Ultra Instinct. So, I guess -Sign- is what happens when Goku starts UI in base form, then SSG and SSB don't look different when UI is active, and it's harder to focus on a SS transformation with UI, but Goku can focus on pure UI and activate the silver form? Kinda just makes PUI feel like Super Saiyajin 6 or something. (I think I said that before...?)

I think overall I have read better from their manga series so far but in this book, I'm really starting to see some actual character development from Goku and Vegeta it is interesting to see once rabid savages that used to take over planets and basically exterminate people off there own planets to becoming god-like forms and actually saving universes and have children of there own with the earth women they are lucky to have because especially in Vegeta you can see from the beginning of the series till now he actually is not fighting just to please himself and really taking into thought he has people to protect and love.
I love this series and how it has evolved over the years I recommend it to anyone who loves reading manga to read this book.
LOL Fighting and fighting and fighting... and a little bit of story. This is the Dragon Ball Super way. Highlights: - Goku vs Granolah, Goku uses Ultra Instinct and Super Saiyan Blue at the same time. Still defeated. - Goku uses Perfected Ultra Instinct, still defeated. - Vegeta uses his God of Destruction power, renaming it Ultra Ego... still defeated by Granolah. - Lots of fighting back and forth, but Granolah still has the upper hand somehow. - The Heeters are searching for the Cerealian Dragon Balls. - Monaito shows up at the end and tells Granolah that one Saiyan was responsible for helping them: Bardock.... who we know as Goku's father.
So... I'm sure we'll get back to story and lore next time, with a lot less fighting. When is Freeza going to show up?
Pretty much nonstop action. Nice to see Goku having a better hold on ultra instinct and looked great. Ultra Ego looked cool too, purple is a good fit for Vegeta. Overall bombastic action and cool upgrades. What I want in dragon ball.
Easily one of the best set up, to an arc we've had in the whole of Super. Having Goku and Vegeta decide to take their own way of getting stronger being mentored by Whis and Beerus and them having their own little rivalry is a ton of fun.
Add to that the whole Granolah with wanting revenge on the Saiyan race for destroying his home planet and wanting to kill Freiza. It adds a lot of character that aside from Zamasu there hasn't been a villain with true goals. Even though he's not the true villain of the arc, it's clearly these blue guys on the cover. Even they've got ideas and goals though and the fact that they convinced Goku and Vegeta that Granolah was the villain that needed to be taken down was perfect.
The best part for me so far it Vegeta regretting his past and all the lives he's slaughtered, it's a good place for his character arc to go it's just a shame that with that we also have him butting heads with Goku over saving his life, that felt like a huge regression as they've been shown fighting together constantly throughout the series only for him to now have a problem with it.
This has the potential to be the best arc in the series, it just needs to stay focused on what it actually wants to do. Maybe not spoil itself as well? There was a big twist in this that would have been epic if it wasn't ruined the the cover of the following volume.
VOLUME 17: CHAPTER 73-76 Arc 6: Granolah the Survivor Saga
Goku used Super Saiyan Blue + Ultra Instinct but still cannot beat Granolah. He then used Perfected Ultra Instinct and get the upperhand in the battle. Suddenly, Granolah that Goku fights is just a clone. The real body of Granolah split his body to fight Goku. Granolah aim for Goku's vital point and instantly knocked Goku down. Vegeta then fights Granolah. The intense battle seem likely will come to end after Granolah hit Vegeta's vital point. Suddenly, Vegeta's chi surge into god chi. He unlocks new form, with purple hair and aura. The form called Ultra Ego that Vegeta's body have its ego. Every damage he taken, the stronger he become. The battle getting intense and Granolah draw its fulk potential as he unlock red left eye too. Vegeta was reaching his limit and defeated by Granolah. Goku intervenes the battle before Vegeta take over again. The fight enters the Sugarian city. Granolah saw a Sugarian citizen inside the building and he saw himself with his mom in the past. He draws Vegeta out from the city and ready to end both of their live and give up his revenge to kill Frieza. Suddenly, Monaito appears in a spaceship and talk about the truth of thw saviour that save Cerealian, Bardock.
This was such a cool volume, we get to see the big fight between Goku and Granolah and its just relentless fighting, like one outdoing the another when it comes to power ups and its the definition of OP and then enter Vegeta and their fight is even crazy and I love how the mangaka is now more comfortable with these characters and really leaning into the absurdity and giving Vegeta his own new transformation in "Ultra Ego", and I freaking love that design and the attitude and as a Vegeta fan its epic to see that and my boy getting his big moment and yeah one of the best moments in Dragon ball easily!
Their fight is epic and then the end moments and you see the change in Vegeta and how he has grown as a character all this time and the manga acknowledging it, and yeah its awesome and then the ending is freaking cool with that sudden twist that will make the next set of volumes really interesting to read so yeah I freaking love this series even more!!
Goku and Granolah continue their fight. Goku can’t cut it with Super Saiyan Blue and finally has to fall back on Ultra Instinct. Even then Granolah has some aces upon his sleeve. It’s Vegeta who finally has to cut in. He takes on Granolah himself … and this fight delivers even more than the one between Goku and Granolah. During the fight Vegeta manages to liberate the God of Destruction Power, named by Vegeta as “Ultra Ego”.
It still don't think he overall threat reaches the level of the Moro arc, so I still prefer that arc (for now?), but the whole build-up towards Ulra Ego was great. The point of criticism you could make here is that DB introduces again a new form / technique. What's nice here, is that Goku and Vegeta definitely leave the same path. Goku has Ultra Instict, while Vegeta evolved towards a technique that is more suited to his character, this being Ultra Ego.
Overall, again a good addition to the DBS series. Rating: 4/5
This volume gave me fun memories of Wrestlemania growing up. The battle between Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta continues to be an all-out superpowered battle royal! Vegeta, the smartest of the three, figures out the mystery of why Granolah hates the Saiyans and in true Vegeta fashion uses it to enrage Granolah. I enjoyed the battling but the constant increase in abilities is starting to drown out the importance of it. That said, the art is top notch, and the fight sequences are so good, I am positive they used them as story boards for the anime. This volume further helps to heal the tasteless feelings I have from volume 15 but I still don't know how much longer at the way this is going is it going to hold as entertaining as it first started off as. If you've read this far, you at least in it for a couple more volumes to see how it goes.
The battle between Granolah, Goku, and Vegeta continues on planet Cereal. Despite this battle being fueled by the lies and manipulation of the Heeters, Granolah’s burning drive for revenge has him convinced that this is a fight worth dying for—and that’s exactly what the Heeters want. Sensing something is amiss, Vegeta begins to piece together the mystery of why Granolah hates the Saiyans so much. But will he be able to figure out the truth in time?
I actually enjoyed this volume quite a bit. I really liked Ultra Ego Vegeta. It’s a bit derivative of his Majin arc, but I think it’s interesting to have him try and fail to be heartless again in an attempt to restore his pride as a warrior. Great fights throughout (the entire volume was essentially one long fight sequence) Granolah had a very interesting character moment towards the end. Intrigued but extremely skeptical about the twist introduced on the final page.
A little to one dimensional story for my taste. I would wait to buy it until the next book is available.
The whole book was half a fight. Considering how long it will take until the next book is available, I would wait. This was a 20min read taking you from cliffhanger to cliffhanger. This pertains to the Kindle version.
Sadly it seems this IP barely has a story beyond constant overpowered chi blasts and “I’m not yet fighting at full power!” …guess I’m only reading it as this point for the barest of nostalgia hits with the (most likely futile) hope that the story will one day improve. Maybe I should just reread classic DB and DBZ
4.5, loved all the fight scenes on this one with the landscape and all that for this that's why I've rated it 5 but I've taken off half a point for that little bit they had in here were they made Vegeta 'admit' to only teaming up and working with him when it's to protect something or someone. Didn't like that and felt like a step back with Vegeta's character development
Non-stop action from top to bottom and it's fairly self contained in this one book, which is always a happy bonus when reading these volumes. Ultra Ego is an interesting answer to Ultra Instinct, the character work during Granolah's battles feel like classic Dragon Ball, and the Bardock reveal – while fanservicery – is thematically compelling.

It was mostly fighting for this volume but man WAS IT CRAZY. Granolah is just cool as hell I don’t know what else to say like wow his motivation is clear and he simply is trying to kill those who killed his people. The introduction of Ultra Ego was SO GOOD I’m so happy Vegeta has a cool form now and man the reveal at the end OMG !
The Saiyans will take responsibility for their people's past wrong doings by taking the brunt of the last Cerealians' revengful anger and new power. Find out what happens on the next DRAGONBALL SUPER!!!
While the previous volume allowed to explore universwe buildling, this one is the other side fo the coin. It's nothing but a knockdown and dragged out battle royal as Goku and Vegeta take on their new opponent. It also features a lot of intensity between as the battle plays out.
