About the author

Né en 1942, Michel Tremblay grandit dans un appartement de Montréal où s'entassent plusieurs familles. Ses origines modestes marqueront d'ailleurs ses œuvres, souvent campées au cœur de la classe ouvrière, où misères sociale et morale se côtoient. En 1964, il participe au Concours des jeunes auteurs de Radio-Canada, avec une pièce de théâtre intitulée Le train, et remporte le premier prix. C'est à peine un an plus tard qu'il écrit l'une de ses œuvres majeures, Les belles-sœurs, dont le succès perdure. La pièce est jouée pour la première fois en 1968 au Théâtre du Rideau Vert.

Michel Tremblay est l'auteur d'un nombre considérable de pièces de théâtre, de romans, et d'adaptations d'œuvres d'auteurs et de dramaturges étrangers. On lui doit aussi quelques comédies musicales, des scénarios de films et un opéra. Ses univers sont peuplés de femmes, tantôt caractérielles et imparfaites, tantôt fragiles et attachantes, qu'il peint avec réalisme et humour. Vivant les difficultés du quotidien, ses personnages au dialecte coloré ont d'ailleurs contribué à introduire dans la dramaturgie et la littérature d'alors un niveau de langue boudé des artistes : le joual.

En 2006, il remporte le Grand Prix Metropolis bleu pour l'ensemble de son œuvre.

En 2017, le Prix Gilles-Corbeil lui est décerné pour l'ensemble de son oeuvre.

Ça fait du bien de sortir un peu des drames de la famille d'Albertine, tout en la suivant encore en périphérie par le biais de la Duchesse. Ça fait du bien aussi de voir des situations familiales insupportables dont la victime se sort. J'ai été tenue en haleine à partir de la scène de l'audition. Je vais m'ennuyer du Sélect (qui me donnait le goût de manger des hamburgers chaque fois que j'ouvrais le livre) mais j'ai hâte de plonger dans l'expo 67.

Fairly interesting novel, but unfortunately I am familiar with Tremblay’s 6-book series, and this cannot hold a candle to those. This is basically the study of “the other”— one who doesn’t fit in to society for whatever reason. I suspect/believe he was using this main character with physical deformities to parallel the non-straight experience. Maybe not, but the farther I got into this story, the more he seemed to be speaking to the non-straight experience. It was well-written and highly emotional, but I just wasn’t as entranced with this characters as I [still] am with the characters in his 6-book series.

Toujours un plaisir de lire Tremblay, mais ce roman, à mon sens, ne trône pas au dessus de son oeuvre. L’étude du personnage principal, la serveuse Céline Poulain, est d’une grande perspicacité et sensibilité. L’auteur attribue à la plume de Céline (le cahier noir est son journal personnel) un niveau de langage qui ne s’aligne pas très bien avec le personnage et ceci est un peu agaçant, mais j’ajoute sans hésitation le Cahier rouge et le bleu (qui complètent la trilogie) à ma liste de lecture.

Aller voir La Duchesse de Langeais du même auteur au théâtre m’a donné l’idée de relire cette trilogie. Après toutes ces années, je m’attache encore à Céline Poulin. Cette waitress aînée d’une famille dysfonctionnelle travaille surtout de nuit au Sélect, où elle sert des guidounes, des paumés et des étudiants. Sa vie change à tout jamais quand elle accepte donner la réplique à une aspirante comédienne pour une audition. Je l’ai redévoré!

Excellent!
J'adore l'univers du roman et les personnage.
J'ai apprécié le genre un peu épistolaire, et le fait que l'action se déroule rapidement.
Je l'ai lu rapidement et je le fermais avec misère le soir.
On dit que ce roman est loin detre dans les meilleurs de l'auteur et c'est tant mieux pour moi, je risque de ne pas être déçue quand je vais explorer son oeuvre davantage!

Le contexte et les personnages sont intéressants, la plume est superbe, mais ça tourne beaucoup en rond. La narratrice change constamment d’idée sur les mêmes points et, au final, il n’y a pas tellement d’action. Toutefois, ça cadre avec Céline, en un sens.

Another novel series by Michel Tremblay, yipee! As with the "Chronique du Plateau Mont-Royal," this trilogy deals with characters living and/or working around the Boulevard St. Laurent in Montreal. This trilogy focuses on a single character, Celine, a little person fighting for independence from her family in the 1960s. In the first book she's working as a waitress at a greasy spoon inhabited by the demi-monde at night and by art students during the day. When one of the students enlists her to prepare an audition scene for a little theatre production of "The Trojan Women," it sets Celine on a new direction and a collision course with the alcoholic mother who can't forgive her daughter for having been born with a disability. One character from the Chronique, Edouard (the Duchess of Langeais), plays a key role in Celine's character growth.

I'd originally read this in French, but with my French rusty I returned to it in English, and experienced much the same appreciation I had originally. An incisive portrait of life on the fringes of Montreal's sexual/cultural underworld of the mid-Sixties, with a searing mother-daughter relationship at the center. Looking forward to making my way through the rest of the trilogy.

A couple of years ago, I took a French class in which we participated in Le concours littéraire au Collège or something like that and we had to evaluate 5 books and this is one of them. I think it won too but that wouldn't have been my pick.
Anyway, I was not familiar with Tremblay's world and it was a good read. Good enough that I am reading the other books in the serie at the moment =)
