Of Mist and Mirrors

Rate this book
To thine own side be true...

Minerva Dalton is an experienced operative among the Agents of the Convent and not easily ruffled by the nature of her work. But when the first social event of her assignment is interrupted by another operative using the same alias surname as her own, she has to make a sudden adjustment that changes the course of both missions. And that of her life.

Griffin Russell did not expect the surprise that was Minerva when he'd taken this assignment, but he was not about to argue with a woman who was stunning as well as dangerous. He takes up an unlikely partnership with her to protect them both from discovery and failure, and discovers just how skilled and accomplished an agent she truly is.

Working together, can they accomplish both missions and not kill each other in the process? Or will something far more complicated and far less expected arise from their predicament?

I was born once upon a time, and I started making up stories right away. Eventually, I started writing them down, and never stopped! I have a day job, which gets in the way of my writing, but it pays the bills so I CAN write, so I guess that's okay! I am a bookworm, which I think is key to being a writer, and I am always looking for inspiration! LOVED IT!!! This one focuses more on the romance! The spying takes a back seat and I was totally ok with that! These two are forced to play the part of a Very happily married couple and the chemistry was awesome!! Man this had some swoony moments and some burning kisses. I love the way Connolly writes dialog there is always so much fun and play and then the intense moments. I just loved this one and love the whole series. We get to hear about past agents and check up on others from the last couple books. Very fun clean romance.

What a dynamic couple! Minerva and Griffin are both skilled and experienced spies for England, but this is their first time working together. I loved what they both brought to the table, and their banter was always entertaining. Griffin is a charming antagonizer, and Minerva is alternately stoic, annoyed, and sassy. Their first meeting was memorable for them both, and their attraction grows as they develop trust and respect for the true person beneath each of their facades. The layered plot kept the pace moving as Minerva and Griffin establish their position as a power couple in society, seek out traitors, and search for clues of a missing person of interest. I'm always intrigued and enthralled by this author's Regency books with suspense woven in with the romance!

This is now my favorite Agents of the Convent book!! Maybe it has something to do with the strong enemies to lovers vibe I got from Minerva and Griffin (aka Griff). They're both agents used to working alone but when home office slips up they end up having to pretend they're a happily married couple. Oh the fun scenes we readers get because of that, not to mention all the witty, snappy banter and we get some of it in multiple languages!! Along with the enemies to lovers vibe, we have a fake marriage with lots of forced close proximity!!

So Minerva and Griff are working two cases simultaneously. Do the cases overlap? Could they be working the same case? I loved seeing or at least hearing about so many of the characters from the previous Agents of the Convent books and The London League--Ears, Sketch, Sphinx, Cap, Trace. . . and one of my favorites--Tilda the costumer. Every time she appeared I pictured a Regency version of Edna Mode from The Incredibles!! I loved all the details the author gave about Minerva's costumes. It was so interesting and I helped me picture what they looked like.

Griff and Minerva have completely different backgrounds which adds to some of the tension between the two characters. It takes awhile but we finally find out Minerva's background and how she became an Agent of the Convent. There were a few twists and turns in the story but what's a spy story without a couple of surprises? I anxiously look forward to the next book in the series.

I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

Oh my, swoon!! Goodness me. Rebecca Connolly has always been one of my favorite authors and she wrote an amazingly swoony romance here. First off, there was so much action and intrigue and everything wonderful you’d hope to find in a regency spy romance. Add in all the pop ups of past favorites from her other books and this one is a keeper!

So much happened and it was a fun adventure to follow along with Griff and Minerva. They were adorable and Griff’s rakish humor was 😍🔥!

Super adorable and I totally recommend it….and the whole series.

I was so excited for this third book in the Agents of the Convent series, because I love spies and intrigue, but it is hard to find clean reads in that genre. Rebecca Connolly has it down to an art form.
For this installment the main characters are both spies who have been working for years at their profession. Each shows up to a ball under an assumed name - a long vacant title that is the perfect entry for their current separate cases. The problem? Neither one knew the other was using the title, and they have to make up a matching story on the fly. It's a good one, until their superiors inform them they've just stuck themselves together for the forseable future. They'll have to pretend to be married and out enjoying society while trying to solve not one, but two cases.

The threads from past books in the series wind through this one, moving plot lines along with mystery and unexpected twists. I loved it!

I truly love this series! The intrigue, the romance, the danger, it has it all!

In this book we work with two agents, Mirrors and Mist! They are as different as can be but are put together on a mission rather against their will. Their relationship is stormy, the danger is real, and the intrigue just gets deeper and deeper.

The characters are well developed, the story line great, and more will come as the threat is not gone!

Another win for Rebecca Connolly! I can't wait for the next one!

What happens when two very talented spies for the crown , used to working alone, get paired as a married couple in Regency London. ? I loved both characters, and the books before this one. Mirrors was once an orphan on the meanest streets in London. She gets pulled into a special program after saving a life of a spy, and Gent reports it. She is now working as a teacher, at the very same school she was put in as a pre- teen. Mist is the brother of a Duke, and was invited to join years prior. A secret he kept from his brother. Neither Mist nor Mirrors is thrilled to be paired up. They have little choice in the matter. Once their superiors have spoken, they have no choice. They take on a persona of a wealthy regency couple returning to England. It is a fun, and exciting book. Plus it shows all the skills each agent has, as they search for a missing person. Some of their predicaments are really funny. The story keeps your interest, as the two agents get used to being a fake married couple. The plot unfolds to head toward more information learned concerning the man they seek, and the French involvement. It is not a cliffhanger, but you know more of this plot will be in the next book. I loved the ending , and the epilogue. 5 stars.

This was a wonderful read! I loved seeing old "friends" from previous books from the Shopkeepers and Agents of the Convent series (like Cap, Ears, Sketch, Weaver and more). Characters from other series that still hold a place in my heart. I love the way the story opens, and how the agents come to work together. I had vivid images in my mind as I read the scene! So good. The descriptions of how the agents feel throughout is terrific, you can't help but "feel" with them. Witty and engaging, the characters come to life and I didn't want to put the book down! Loved this spy novel with just the right amount of action and tenderness.

I gave this book 4 stars because it is well written, engaging, believable, and fun. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because of the foreign language blindness I felt at the beginning of the book and sometimes later in the book. The dialog didn't clarify what language was being spoken or what it meant. When I googled it to translate so I could keep up with what was going on, it only brought up the book title, and due to the copy write protection, I couldn't determine the translation. The opposite character could have given context, without us needing to know what exactly was said. But only on a few of the sentences did that happen with what the language was or perhaps the gist of the statement.

Rebecca is one of my favorite authors - and she doesn't disappoint in this story of mystery, loss, love, and endearing characters that warm your heart. I cheered for Minerva and Griff to find their way through their own obstacles to come to a place of trust in each other. I definitely recommend this book - you won't be disappointed.Of Mist and MirrorsRebecca Connolly

This was a fun book to read. Minerva was on an assignment in London. They had given her a name that was long since moved out of London. However as she was at this ball she was told her husband had showed up. So unsure of what to do she runs and jumps in the arms of said man and kisses him welcoming him home. Griffin was on assignment in London as well, under an assumed name. When during a ball a woman comes up and kisses him to welcome him home.
As these two discover each other's missions and help solve them they grow in friendship and love. When hard times come they are unsure about things. But as all things do there was a scary situation and they realized how much they loved one another and were able to become an actual married couple.
I was given an ARC of this book and left the review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are my own.

How thrilling was this book! Literally thru the whole book I was on the edge of my chair trying to figure this mystery out. I am a sucker for regency spy books, especially when it’s a man and woman team duo! This one just made my favorite in this category. Oh so good! Super page turner, I couldn’t put it down. When I got to the last 1/4 of the book I told my family I needed a timeout to finish the book because my mind was so wrapped up in this story I couldn’t multitask with anything else.

I have read half of the series The London League so there were some names that I was familiar with but this is the first of the series Agents of the Convent I’ve read. I did not feel lost, so each book can be read alone. That being said I’ve already purchased the remaining books that I’ve missed in both series because this is just a great adventure that I want enjoy every step of the journey.

Minerva and Griff were the definition of a power spy couple. They both had such interesting backgrounds. I loved how their lives intersected before they even really knew each other. I don’t want to give away any of the exciting plot twists but wow, it was like reading a Regency version of Annie and Auggie from Covert Affairs with action, mystery, and swoony melting (but clean) kissing.

Rating: PG/PG-13, clean, kissing, there is action with some mild violence.

I loved this book so much!!! I’ve never met a Rebecca Connolly book I didn’t like, but I especially enjoy her London League and Agents of the Convent books. (Spy stories aren’t usually my jam, but hers are just so darn good!) I really enjoyed the characters and their banter and interactions. The premise of spies from different divisions unknowingly using the same defunct title and then being forced to carry on their missions playing a married couple is so fun! The initial interaction between them was the best. It set a perfect tone for the story. I don’t know how far ahead the author plots the intrigue, but the books and intrigue connect so well together and characters carry over, so I think this story is best enjoyed after reading the London League series and the previous books in Agents of the Convent. Although you can certainly enjoy this great romantic story at face-value without all the background. The intrigue component is complex enough to keep up the intensity, but also accessible for readers like me who are there for the romance. It definitely skews more romance with a background of intrigue. As she always does, Connolly delivers fantastic romantic tension. She’s one of my favourite authors for physical romantic tension that still keeps in the bounds of a clean read. This book absolutely delivered on that. I highly recommend this book!

This pulled me right into the story when an female operative for the crown, Minerva Dalton takes a name of Lady and finds herself at a ball facing another man who is supposed to be her husband but in fact is a male operative for the crown. Without thought or knowledge of who he is, she kisses him in sight of everyone at the ball.

Griffin Russell is does not hold back from kissing his supposed wife regardless of who she truly is. He will figure that detail out later. He too is an operative working for the crown under an assumed name.

Thrown together, these two must learn to act the part of husband and wife in public and learn to work together to solve not one but two cases.

I loved this story. Griffin cracked me up with his flirtations. Minerva was so stern, but eventually he finds a way through her tough shell. I love the chemistry these two had. It was a great adventure, some laughter, some kisses, and some sweet clean romance. Definitely worth the read!

I received an ARC to review. The opinion expressed is mine and mine alone without any influence.

Two spies. Two cases. One undercover family identity. Fun.
This book starts as you would expect then suddenly takes a hard turn that changes everything. Minerva or Mirrors is a teacher at a finishing school and, also a spy based out of that school. She has been given an assignment to identify individuals involved in plotting against the government. As such, she has been given the identity of Lady Beddingsford, a titled family name that no longer had any family attached to it. Imagine her shock when at a ball she is suddenly approached and told that her husband, Lord Beddingsford, had just arrived. Luckily, she was also told he was wearing a gold waistcoat so she could pick him out of the group to warmly welcome him And so it goes, two spies, Mirrors and Mist or Griff, from different but related agencies, with different assignments, given the same family name as a cover. One a brother of a Duke. The other growing up as a street urchin. Now they are forced to work together on both cases as a “married” couple from the peerage and the fun begins, as they both struggle to find ways to make the partnership work even as a secret remains between them. A very entertaining read, I’m sure you’ll enjoy. I received an early copy and this is my honest review.

My thoughts about this book:

• I enjoyed Minerva and Griff in this story. They were very dimensional and well developed.

• Since Griff and Minerva were spies, they were gifted in speaking many foreign languages. The author embedded dialectal phrases throughout the book. I found it fun to use context to predict the meaning of the phrases and then use Google to translate them.

• I liked that there were some characters from the author's London League series in this book. This book can be read as a stand alone, but I feel you get more from having read the London League series, which I have.

• The plot has some nice twists and turns in it, suspense, and action.

• There were lots of hilarious scenes and witty banter throughout the book. Making this a fun read.

• I felt the ending was well done.

• This was a clean read. No swearing or sex.

I was given an advance copy of this book by the author. My review was voluntary and my opinions were my own. I highly recommend this Regency spy book and I'm looking forward to reading the next novel in this series.

Ingenious Regency Spy Intrigue – Fantastic Read!
I fell in love with Rebecca Connolly’s Agents of the Convent series reading the first two installments and the opportunity to continue delving into this Regency world was impossible to pass up! From the start, the witty, verbal sparring (even in non-English languages!) and deepening attraction between Griffin and Minerva, which neither of them could admit, kept me reading until the wee small hours of the night! Both protagonists are highly skilled covert operatives, used to working as individuals, who are now forced to work with a partner and combine their missions. I really enjoyed Connolly’s exploration of how Griff and Min resolved working together as a team as well as what it means to belong, and how that was accomplished in each character’s life, along with all the adventures along the way. Learning their backgrounds enable me to see their characters grow and develop as the story progressed, and I loved revisiting characters from the worlds of the London League as well as Agents of the Convent. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy reading clean historical romance with a strong infusion of espionage and political intrigue, and I cannot wait to see what happens next! I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the author and all the opinions expressed in this review are my own and freely given.

I had been looking out for this for months, since I loved the London League series and the first two books of the Agents of the Convent series. It had less intrigue and suspense than the previous two books, and focused more on the romance, but it was fun and I loved this too. The first meeting between Griff and Minerva was just too delicious - the banter and barbs in all those languages! (Even though I had to use a translation service to decipher it). I loved that Griff was completely in awe of Minerva, and a large part of it was her skills rather than her appearance.

I missed having a few scenes, and think that these would have made wonderful additions to the book. The revelation of Griff's connection to Hawk to Minerva had so much potential for drama, which would have been entertaining given Griff's personality. Even keeping the event flow same, Hawk's learning of Griff's role was completely missing, which would have been enjoyable. And Griff identifying Minerva as her savior was a little bit lackluster. All minor quibbles though.

I enjoyed this quite a lot, and keenly wait for the next one now.

In a continuation of the Agents of the Convent series, we are introduced to Minerva and Griff aka Mirrors and Mist. They are really rather opposites in personalities. I liked Griff right away, Minerva was busy being the tough guy so it took longer to like her. Once her backstory came out it was understandable why she was the way she was. Not a lot of spy stuff, or even that much romance, but what there was seemed to balance out. Griff was on the overprotective side, which caused Minerva to think:

At this rate, she would have to retire from being an operative because she came attached to her very own nanny.

The solution to the spy business did not come to a conclusion, which may mean it is a set up for the next book. But there is a satisfactory HEA. This is not a stand-alone but should be read in order with the series. The table of contents says there is an Epilogue, but it is only a repeat of Chapter 23. Hope they get that fixed.

Many thanks to Rebecca Connolly and BookFunnel for the free copy.

Amazing Addition go The Convent Series

Thus far, Mist and Mirrors are my favorite characters of this series!!
While from totally different backgrounds, they are both the best in their field and can go toe-to-toe in whit, intelligence, deduction skills, humor and language skills . . . which you can see right from the get go when Minerva (Mirrors) is processing their personas being introduced into society in a different languages and Griff (Mist) understands all NINE of them!!! (Yes, I did nerd out over this scene & used the highlight translate option & then Google translate for the languages not available with Kindle - Bravo Rebecca Connolly for your thoroughness on each translation!!).
Seeing these characters spar &, over time, appreciate each other as so much fun to see/read. As well as the interactions with their families, friends and "co-workers" and how those affect the full depth of each of them as a person.
You'll be sad for their story go "end" but at the same time, it leaves you wanting to find it what happens in the next book!

And they are off and running. Minerva and Griff are two of my favorite characters and they do not disappoint in this story. The witty banter, swoony attraction and their stubbornness, make for an entertaining, intriguing and captivating story. While the story is a wonderful part of the series, it can be read as a standalone. But I did enjoy having many familiar characters play parts throughout this book. I thought plot of the book was a little bit weak, their mission becomes just a background of the story. If you are looking for a entertaining romance with a little mystery. I would recommend this book The story is cleverly written, and the relationship between the characters is very strong.
There is passionate kissing, some state of modest undress, but all clean and tactful. Also some mild cursing. Perhaps more cursing than I typically like, but understanding that the author is using it to make a more impactful statement. I really did enjoy reading this book.

Of Mist and Mirrors by Rebecca Connolly (5 stars)

This book starts off with a bang and the action and emotion just keep coming until the very satisfying conclusion!

Lots of fabulous teasing and banter between our two protagonists, as well as intense romantic tension.

Quite a few references to other characters from other books in the series, but it does well as a stand-alone.

Another truly satisfying book in this series!

One element I enjoy in this series and in the “London League” series is the ongoing underplot against Britain that our operatives are trying to uncover. It doesn’t wrap up at the end of each book, but continues to flow throughout each and the reader (and operatives) get closer and closer to uncovering the grand nefarious scheme. Sometimes, our agents are able to stop smaller plots within the bigger one, but there’s always the hunt for the head operatives of the other side and the mystery of what the grand scheme consists of.

When a gentleman attends a social event using the same alias as her, Minerva has to act quickly. But her entire assignment is about the drastically change!
Griffin is in shock after his first encounter with Minerva, but they have to make the best of the situation if they are going to be able to avoid suspicion and continue their secret missions.
Can they manage to traverse through the Social Scene and their investigations, without killing each other in the process???
This was an intriguing story. Right from the beginning, the author captures your attention. I also love undercover, pretend marriages.
This was my first book in this series, however, so I was not familiar with all the agents and their code names. It may be best to start at the beginning to immerse yourself in this world of Agents. But, even starting in the middle of the series, I was able to understand the plot and enjoy the book.
It was a fun, clean, sweet book with a healthy dose of mystery.

I am loving this series and I loved this addition to it. Fun spy romance. Excellent meet-cute. Way to make a splash in society. I loved these two characters together and how they had to learn to mesh their lives and personalities in order to follow their hearts. The romance is fiery as it really is the only way either of them could be in a relationship. The intrigue is dramatic. And it was fun to see characters from previous books pop up in name if not in person. I have no idea how many books there will be in this series but I look forward to any and all of them.

Sex: no
Language: yes
Violence: yes

I adored Minerva and Griffin in Of Mist and Mirrors by Rebecca Connolly! A perfectly paced regency spy story with double operatives, full of witty banter, swoony (but clean) kisses, and palpable chemistry. The idea of having two spies thrust together was entertaining and set up the perfect enemies to lover trope with a tinge of marriage of convenience. The back stories of Minerva and Griffin allowed for character growth and development as they learned to trust and rely on one another. Minerva and Griffin gave a good balance to each other, although they both bring their own grit and healthy respect for one another’s abilities. I love how Conolly writes in appearances of previous characters from London League and Agents of Convent. The overlapping of beloved previous characters is part of what makes this world of intrigue so addicting!

The opening scene in this book is an absolute riot, and Minerva is my favorite of the Convent ladies thus far in the series. She's gutsy and somewhat raw, which she demonstrates pretty handily in the book's opening scene. (I won't spoil it, but my jaw dropped when I read it.) My only disappointment with her character is that she's fictional, so I can't actually be friends with her in real life. She finally meets her match in Griffin, who initially seems like a bit of a flirt, but whose uncanny ability to see below the surface to the real woman beneath wins her heart. As an avid fan of the London League series, I enjoyed reading a bit about those characters in this story as well.

This book is definitely a 5 star story, and I can't wait for the next one!

clean spy romance

I must admit that this is one of the authors I wait most anxiously for new books from and she did not disappoint!

Her style of writing is both descriptive and realistic. Her plots well thought out. The characters and plots weave a compelling narrative that holds the reader. There is intrigue, spies and danger…wrapped up in romance and witty and down right humorous dialogue!

I really enjoyed both the hero and heroine as they struggled to work together when they expected to work alone… and horrors! They might even begin to like each other. :-)

I highly recommend all the books in both the “London League “ and “Agents of the Convent”. They can be read as standalone but each builds on the others with the subplot that is laced throughout the books.

From the very first scene this book had one hundred percent of my attention.

I loved that both the MCs are deep cover operatives. The mistrust and the walls on both sides led to some really fun banter. (Which Rebecca Connolly is amazing at.) Some really fun tension, and some beautiful character growth and realizations.

The enemies to lovers trope is given a unique twist in not just forced proximity, but a working relationship that requires trust and a fun and unexpected backstory.

I loved the glimpses of the London League and the mystery Rebecca is building entwining them all. This spymance was such an entertaining read!

Another fun agents of the convent book! I loved the fake relationship while playing spies - along with the enemies-to-lovers vibe - and there were definitely some fun plot twists and reveals along the way. Lots of mentions of past characters from this series and the author's other spy series but this can easily be read as a standalone. The fun banter and swoony kisses were definitely a highlight for me. Some of the mystery/spy plot got a little bogged down in the details but overall, any fan of Rebecca Connolly would enjoy this book!

Awesome

I often wonder how characters are fleshed out so perfectly flawless. Like psychologists are advising the author on behavior. It is fascinating how a three dimensional personality can be made up.
This author does a great job in putting whole lives between the pages. Plot, dialogue as well as historical accuracy just fascinated me. Making a complete live and adding highs and lows like the weather switch in the characters mind. What a gift of organization with so many parts. These books never disappoint and the tenderness of falling in love seems to me gets better with each novel! Thank you...and now on to book 4!!! Can't wait!

The romance in this story was so good. I loved the chemistry between Minerva and Griff and that meet cute plus first kiss was fantastic. I found this story to be more driven by their fake relationship and therefore growing relationship which no complaints, though, the spy and mission stuff did take more of a backseat than I was expecting. The ending set things up where I really want the next book to answer all of my questions. This was an enjoyable Regency read with fun dialogue and a sweet romance.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Ok, loved it. Fits in well with the Agents of the Convent series and was enjoyable to read. Really liked the shock of when Griff and Minerva met for the first time. The mix of spy business and a growing relationship was very well done and felt natural and not forced. Enough danger and mystery to keep those readers happy, with great chemistry for more of the romance fans. Definitely worth reading, more understandable if you've read the first books in the series.
