The Lie in Our Marriage

Rate this book
On a warm spring evening, guests gather in a perfectly manicured garden to celebrate Maggie and Len’s twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Maggie leans against the apple tree, watching her fun-loving husband and darling children as her heart swells with pride. As the joyful party atmosphere disappears into the night, close by, the lifeless body of a young woman is pulled from a river.

Slipping upstairs to find the special gift for her adoring husband, Maggie stumbles across something else hidden amongst the dusty boxes of family keepsakes…
A printed pink silky scarf that doesn’t belong to her. She holds it up to her face, breaths in the sweet sickly perfume, it’s scent familiar, and tendrils of fear snake through her body. The scarf is stained with blood.

As Maggie rejoins the party and tries to ignore her churning stomach, she pours herself a glass of champagne to toast the man she’s enjoyed decades of happy marriage with. Then she catches a news flash of the local girl’s murder. She stares at the girl with the beautiful face, long ice-blonde hair and, draped loosely around her neck, Maggie recognises it instantly. She’s wearing the scarf.

An utterly addictive and twisty read about the complex web of secrets within a family that will have you racing through to the mind-blowing end. If you love Lisa Jewell, Gillian Flynn and Behind Closed Doors, you won’t be able to put this down!

Reading this story took me a lot longer than anticipated.

Don't get me wrong:
It is a good story, however - it could have been written with less words.
It was a very, very slow burn for me.

To try to explain this a little better - let's take a rainbow, for example:
I believe it's completely sufficient to describe a rainbow as colorful, starting at one point and ending at the opposite end, being colorful and beautiful.
I do not need to know, how many colors and which colors are in the rainbow, and if God or the gay community claim it theirs, if there is a pot of gold at the other end, etc. and while describing it in all the details, it constantly repeats its description.
That's how this book seemed to me - a lot of writing used over and over repeatedly.

We already know, how the main characters felt about certain situations - no reson to repeat over and over.

I would have given this book a solid 4.5 stars, if it would not have been read repeatedly slow as molasses...

Again - the story is great, but the length was un-necesary.
To cut it short: Come to the point and move on - do not regurgitate, because that adds a big "boring factor" to the whole story.

Would I recommend this book ?
Yes, but only if you can deal with a true slow burn and want to invest the time.

The book seemed too long to me with a lot of fluff. The ending was expected. Not one of my favorites

The Lie in Our Marriage by Anna Lou-Weatherley I have loved all of this authors books This is the sixth book in the excellent Detective Dan Riley series and was brilliant from start to finish and a great page turner. Especially as kept me guessing right till the end and the Bang!!!! didn't see that brilliant twist at the end. All the characters were excellent and well developed they all fitted well within each chapter. I just love Detective Dan Riley.
I loved this book.

I highly recommend The Lie in Our Marriage another 5 star read.

Big Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture, and Anna-Lou Weatherley for this ARC in return for an honest review.

Wicked Twist!! I knew that Maggie was wrong. I thought I knew who the killer was. Boy was I wrong. I should have guessed because the clues were there. I was so focused on how stupid Maggie was being that I did not figure it out. What a great book. I highly recommend reading it. So many twists.

This book just wasn't for me. The ending had a good twist, but the build up to get to the end didn't keep me on the edge of my seat or curious to want to know more. I have it 2 stars just because the ending was decent.

What would you do if you thought your husband of 25 years murdered a young woman? What if he didn't do it? The truth can be more devastating. This story will keep you riveted.
