The last thing Whalen expected when he was called in to investigate the strange events at the arctic training camp was to find his old girlfriend, Chrissy. And as the first meeting showed, she was still angry at him. Not exactly the type of under cover existence he’d been hoping for.
Chrissy joined the military because of Whalen. Not to chase after him but to understand why he did what he did – or more to the point why he’d chosen this life over her. Now older and wiser, but still as in love with him as ever, she finds herself in the kitchen of the camp from hell. She only wants to finish her tour and head back home to open a bakery with her best friend.
Too bad some one at the camp has other ideas. And it’s going to take everything the two of them can do to keep both of them safe… Even as others show up dead.

After a long night fixing generator issues, Whalen Brown slept in. It's noon when he makes it to the dining room where Barret and Avalon are just arriving as well.
Avalon works in the kitchen with Chef Elijah and now finds out Stephen's been sent away. That means lack of sleep again with only two of them in the kitchen. Chef brushes away that notion by telling her he's asked for Chrissy to help out. They can rotate a bit so both get training as well as some rest between shifts.
Whalen doesn't think he knows a Chrissy until Chef reveals her given name is Crystal. That is something entirely different and she tells him she joined up because of him. She wanted to figure out why he chose the military life over her when he walked out five years prior. Pushing that all aside he heads to start inventory on the equipment area. The disarray has him shaking his head and wondering why it was allowed to get that way, but then with the person originally assigned gone and temps in his place, too much was let go.
Chrissy begins work with Chef and as she finishes up some things, they talk about what she had said earlier about her and Whalen. She's kind of hoping for some kind of closure but then she keeps putting her foot in it.
Whalen and Chrissy see each other at the end of dinner.
In spite of the animosity between these two, the training and other assignments continue as does the investigation.
When Mountain returns from the village it's noted that Amelia is still presumed alive and not missing but in hiding. They really would like to have a conversation with her. The brass has assigned Mountain to look for some documents left behind by the scientists. Whalen's instincts tell him to go with Mountain and so he does. On the way and while searching the scientists' camp, Mountain brings him up to speed on all the incidents to date.
Whalen's going to join a card game but that breaks up and Ralph tells him about an early incident involving live fire outside. Ralph didn't report it and will deny it if he's questioned about it.
There are many things happening in this book and so much that has already been investigated is once again being checked for accuracy. All that and more interactions with Chrissy that lead to understanding.
Another incident, more investigation, more fear, more questions, a few answers and Chrissy and Whalen's relationship takes a turn for the romantic.
I really can't wait for the next book in this series, the suspense is killing me!!
This is a gripping series from Dale Mayer, each book has it's own story but the big picture is the disturbing theme running through all the books. The last person that Whalen Brown expected to see in the camp dinning room was Chrissie, his ex girlfriend, the girlfriend that he had walked out on five years previously. Whalen had been sent by Lt. Commander Mason Callister, head of the Mavericks dark ops team to join his team who were investigating sinister happenings at an Arctic International joint elite task force training centre, people had died in strange circumstances, people had disappeared including Teegan Rode who was Mason's friend and brother to Mountain, another member of the team. Another person who was missing without a trace was Dr. Amelia, head of a scientific team who were based close by until it was forced to close down. Mountain had made it his mission to find out what had happened to his brother, Dr. Amelia and the rest of the missing people. Chrissie was devastated then angry that Whalen had walked out on her, not only walked out but walked out without a word, what had she done to deserve that ? Determined to discover what hold the navy had over Whalen, why he preferred the military to her, Chrissie joined up, she had enjoyed her five years in the military but now she was ready to settle down and follow her dream to open a bakery. How would Whalen react to being in the confined space of the Arctic Training Camp with Chrissie, the attraction was obviously still there. The atmosphere at the camp was toxic, the fear and mistrust was palpable and suspicion was targeted toward Mason's team including Chrissie, they may have parted five years ago but it was clear that they would have each others back when their lives were in danger. I can't wait to read the next book in the series as this mystery continues to unravel. I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
Whalen is another man called in to investigate the strange events at the Arctic training camp only to find his old girlfriend Chrissy there. When they first meet there it is clear that she is still angry at him which doesn't give him the undercover existence he had hoped for. Chrissy joined the military because of Whalen to understand why he had chosen this life over her. She is still in love with him but all she wants is to finish her tour and head back home to open a bakery with her best friend. Too bad someone at the camp has other ideas. And it’s going to take everything the two of them can do to keep both of them safe even as others show up dead.
I enjoyed this continuation of the investigation as to what was going on at the Arctic training camp with all of the search for answers as curve balls headed for the inhabitants at the same time. Chrissy was a firecracker who was not prepared to give Whalen an easy ride after his previous lack of communication skills and he was clueless until he thought about a part of his life he was done and dusted (even though he still loved her). A dramatic event definitely stopped them short and made them reassess their priorities. Easy to read, feel and understand. This story contains mature content.

Whalen and Chrissy have a past and at their first meeting both would have said that past was well and truly done, dusted and forever finished. But danger and malicious acts have a way of making you reassess and question everything you thought you knew. Chrissy grows massively through her first week at camp, she now has an understanding of army life and a completely different outlook to her civilian self, she is a different person to the Crystal that Walen knew five years ago, she knows herself better but also appreciates that she needs to understand other peoples point of view. Whilst Chrissy has grown over theast.five years and has more awareness, Whalen has matured and has improved his communication skills, he is now secure enough in himself to admit his fears and failings, something he would never have done before. I really like both Whalen and Chrissy, and the people they are now are great together, especially when they become targets, the more they are targeted the closer they become. We get some important puzzle pieces to the bigger picture in this book, but we also lose what appear to be great leads, mistakes are being made which makes the team hope that they can finally find some answers and get ahead of the madness that seems intent to kill them all.
I felt as though the investigation was actually getting somewhere in this part even though some inly became clearer at the end. Egan cross referencing all the people on base I felt was a great idea and honestly some ideas came out of that, I'm still slightly worried things to me point in a direction that I hope I'm wrong in even thinking. Loved that Whalen and Crissy got to talk and understand their past as well as move on, I think she understood much better his reasoning and even that he was probably right about her at that time. This is twisty and lots of suspense, so many characters still un-named but who could possibly be part of the problems, it's fascinating and quite addictive reading. Fabulous characters who are mostly very easy to like, mixed with some bas apples who just love to complicate things by lying or not telling what they know, plus the weather being against those searching. The occupants must be narrowing down now since not many newcomers are being allowed in, so Hoping that helps going forward because there are now quite a few investigators so it has to balance against the remaining team members still there. Loving how intriguing this series is, it's so easy to get wrapped up in trying to figure it all out.
This suspense filled military thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are captivating.Whalen was sent back to the article training to try and help the others figure out what the hell is going on.Missing people, murdered people and no real answers as to who is behind it.What really throws Whalen for a loop is his ex girlfriend being there and she's damn angry she has every right to be for the way he left things.Chrissy can't believe her eyes when she sees Whalen walk in she thought she had her anger under control but she guess she didn't when she started throwing jabs at Whalen. He barely answered her telling her if she wants to talk they should find some where less crowded. What shocks Whalen is that he still loves Chrissy but he blew that .Chrissy knows she's mad but why does she want to throw her arms around him and kill him for hours. There are so many twists and turns to this story you will be riveted til the very last page. Will Whalen and Chrissy finally sit down and talk? Will they realize they want a second chance after almost dying? I can hardly wait to see what's next by this multi talented author.
There is a lot of subtle undertones, rumors are flying and there is more action than usual.
Whalen & Chrissy need to watch their backs. The opinions floating about are more about people are opposed to staying at the base than those who wish to stay and they don’t trust new people coming in.
With so much drama going on, the group has trouble solving the mysteries and all the questions being asked every time something allegedly happens. The investigative crew gets blamed when someone goes missing or if there is a death, whether it’s obviously murder or accidental.
The mysteries are ramping up, details are hard to put together, and through it all, Whalen and Chrissy are learning new things about each other. I love the journey Whalen and Chrissy experience to discover the things they assumed about each other which turned out to be different than their reality. Growing up a bit might have had something to do with it.
A great story and looking forward to more from this author.
Whalen by Dale Mayer Shadow Recon Series Book Five Whalen Brown is part of the team trying to discover what is happening at the training base. The last person he ever expected to see in this frozen world was Crystal—Chrissy, is what she preferred, and he’d lost the right to call her Crystal five years ago. Seeing her is just reminding him of what he lost back then. Chrissy had joined the military after Whalen took off on her. She wanted to know what called him there, more than staying with her. Chrissy enjoyed her time but was ready to be done and fulfill her dream of opening a bakery. She’d been warned about the shenanigans at this base; she didn’t expect to see any of it. People are dying, and others are missing. And yet, the team doesn’t seem any closer to discovering what’s happening and catching the perpetrators. It is a fast-paced, complete story with another ongoing story that continues from book to book. **Mild sexual content https://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com...
Murder, mystery and suspense in the arctic. Though each book can be read as a stand alone there is a thread that starts a book 1 and unravels slightly in each book. The author does a good job of providing the information so you are not lost. Whalen starts with something new, being the first book based on a past relationship. Whalen continues with the ongoing mystery of why people are having "accidents", Chrissy is baking and the two start to deal with the past. There is more coming to light which raises more questions, is it the scientific community, or an experiment, is there a mad person, just have to keep reading the series. I am always thrilled when there are scenes with the sled dogs! Thank you for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #Whalen #ShadowRecon #DaleMayer #ValleyPublishingLtd #Booksprout
Whalen is the next member of the team who is sent to investigate the mysterious activities at a training facility in Alaska. He understands his mission would be complicated, but he is about to realize how complicated when not one of the missing members resurface but he finds out that the woman whose heart he broke is working there as well.
Chrissy believed that she and Whalen had a future together until he left with no explanation and no further contact. Her need for closure resulted in her joining the military so that she could understand his decision but finding out that they would be working together was not part of the plan.
The chemistry and connection between Whalen and Chrissy still remain and they find themselves not only trying to uncover the truth at the training facility but the truth about their feelings for each other and what it means for their future.
Whalen's turn is next in this cold isolated place. What seems to be a normal investigated turns deadly. Whalen meets a blast from the past who is still harbouring anger about there break up. Chrissy joined to see what Whalen saw but doesn't expect to see her long lost love after a break up. A long dead person comes back to take down someone who is getting too close for comfort. Wow. Loads of clues but I have no way of knowing who the main person is. I have two strong contenders but with all the twists and turns these books have I may be completely wrong. Loved this book and was shocked at one of the scenes. It just happened and I thought yep all over. I need the last book to see what happens because we'll, my nails aren't gonna last at this rate love the characters and can't wait to read about mountain.
This is the 5th book in the Shadow Recon series. In each book a member of Mason’s team is sent to Artic Survival training to investigate mysterious deaths and missing men. In this book Chrissy arrives and is not happy to see Whalen who ghosted her 5 years earlier. Most of the book is about their relationship and coming to terms with the past and seeing if they have a future. There isn’t much action until the end of the book. Just when they have people in custody who can shed light on the mystery, they don’t talk. Surprisingly one of the men that was taken into custody turned out to be one of the first guys that went missing. This gives Mountain hope that his brother could still be alive. The series is getting close to solving the mystery and I cannot wait.
Whalen has been assigned to a station in the arctic to help investigate strange happenings at a camp designed to teach the military of many nations how to survive in the brutal weather they sometimes have to face. He never expected that Chrissy was even in the service let alone would be assigned to this station. Whalen and Chrissy had been together at one time but that was 5 years ago and ended abruptly when he entered the service and broke communications with her. This story is not only about facing the arctic cold plus danger but also about the frost in their lives too. Very well done enjoyable tale!.

Whalen is sent by the military to the Artic training facility to help discover what is causing all the deaths and disappearances of all the attendees. Surprise, surprise, Whalen discovers his ex girlfriend is working in the bases kitchen. Five years ago he left on a mission without telling her and has never contacted her since. You can guess how Chrissy treated him.
In the mean time another death occurs, leaving no clues. Whalen and Chrissy are continually thrown together and look like they are being targeted. Will they discover they still love each other and who is targeting them.

This is the fifth book in Dale Mayer’s exciting mystery series, “Shadow Recon.” Whalen devoted his military life to serving his country when he is called in to investigate the strange events at the Arctic training camp he find his old girlfriend Chrissy there. Whalen and Chrissy had been together at one time but that was 5 years ago. As trouble and deaths continue Whalen and Chrissy find themselves in danger. They both discover they still care for one another and want a future together if they can survive this assignment. This story is action packed and guaranteed to keep you hooked.
Whalen is the newest person sent to try and figure out what on earth is happening on the base. Chrissy is the newest person to be added to the kitchen staff, and she is top notch when it comes to baked goods. Even though Chrissy is new to the camp, somehow that makes her a target. The person or persons behind all the weird happenings doesn't seem to have a plan in place, aside from creating mass chaos. I keep thinking I might have an idea who is the culprit, but there are still a few too many suspects hahaha. I'm so addicted to this series. Page after page of suspense, and drama!.
Chrissy and Whalen have a painful history. When they meet up again it gives them a chance lo clear the air and possibly reignite their romance. The time they spend together investigating gives them the time to discuss what happened in the past and to discover if the feelings they once had still exist. More questions come up in the mystery of what is going on at the arctic camp and there is a big twist that opens up even more questions.

Well the claws came out when Chrissy and Whalen first see each other and was glad when they started to clear the air especially as her lip reading skills come in handy. Whilst they continue to come across potential attempts of sabotage and unfortunately victims who may have caused their own demise or not. You not only feel the tension that continues to rise in the freezing location, but also get the warm sparks of a second chance between Chrissy and Nolan.

In this story, Whalen is the latest member sent to figure out what is going on at the camp. Things are further complicated for him when he learns his ex-girlfriend, Chrissy, is also there. There's plenty of danger as another person turns up dead but they do get a slight clue at one point. In addition, Whalen and Chrissy have a chance to reflect on what happened between them in the past. The only question is whether they will get back together or not.
I can't believe we're up to book 5 already. This story's weather makes me shiver lol. It's best to read from book 1 so you understand the mystery that continues. People are disappearing or having accidents and the story is slowly coming together as more characters are introduce. Whalen came to investigate and didn't expect to find a blast from the past. As they reassess their relationship they find themselves in danger. A lot of drama going on and I can't wait to see what happens next.
I loved this book, it is well written and will keep you turning pages until the very end. The characters are captivating and well developed. The story is interesting with plenty of romance, drama, mystery, suspense and intrigue. Another great book from a great author. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

Fear can cause people to do drastic things. Nobody can leave the military training compound, but more people come in to replace those who have died or are missing, plus the special team of investigators. This is not received very well, and chaos ensues.
Who is behind all the chaos, and how are they entering the compound? Or are they hiding in the compound? A story within an ongoing story. Who is the killer? Why are they killing? Twists and turns galore.
Whalen Book 5 of Shadow Recon by Dale Mayer is another page turner set in this freezing world. A fast paced story that I thoroughly enjoyed. Although a standalone story I highly recommend reading this series in order as there’s a backstory running in the background. All of these books are awesome.

Whalen has been assigned to help figure out what and who's behind the things going wrong at the camp. But he's in for a surprise when Chrissy shows up to help in the kitchen. They had a thing five years ago and things ended not on a good note. We're finding out more and getting more clues. Lots of suspense, danger, mystery and second chance at love.
Full of mystery, this is a great read in the series. We get a few more answers. And more questions. This author is great at building suspense for the overall series arc. The characters are fun and I really enjoyed Whalen. As always I am intrigued by Mountain. The romance is a slow burn.

First of all, I recommend you do not start this story before bed. It's so gripping that you won't be able to put it down, and you will be up well past your bed time. I was so absolutely engrossed by this story. So intriguing and suspenseful, it kept me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end…If you love a good romantic suspense novel, this one's a must-read all day long. Happy reading
This is the fifth book in the series and Whelan finds an old girlfriend and the story evolves and they are both in danger. This book is full of suspense, drama and action. What can I say but Dale Mayer writes books that hook you in and keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more.
