It definitely wasn't what I was expecting. The structure is strange. The first half contains sort of general tips about building and maintaining wealth in the real world and I thought I would glean more information about Chopra's practical take on those things but it felt kind of general and vague.
The second half of the structure is completely just a run-through of the seven chakras with an eye (most of the time) to abundance. There were some moments that really got me thinking but if you are already familiar with the chakras and unblocking them I don't know how much more new information you'll get. The quizzes are somewhat helpful in making real-life connections between these spiritual concepts and real life but only to a point.
Bottom line: I thought this book would be much more proactive and practical in its tone than it was, and the structure really surprised (and bothered) me. Also--this is important--where were the citations?! It's so, so important when you are mentioning articles or studies and statistics to CITE YOUR SOURCES, ESPECIALLY in a book about living your values in your professional life... I was shocked not to find a single damn one in this book. Especially when you are writing for skeptics and people who are looking to call your message pie-in-the-sky, why would you make an editorial decision like that? There was one place where Chopra literally quotes an article and doesn't say who wrote it so if you want to know who deserves credit or where to learn more, you can't.
The book has a lot of interesting points and the above issue distracted from them.
The basic premise of this book is solid: cultivating an inner sense of abundance is important beyond just earning money, and satisfaction comes more from use of "creative intelligence" (similar to Csikszentmihalyi's term "flow") aligned with your dharma than from having nice things. Readers unfamiliar with Chopra might expect more about money or perhaps spiritually manifesting wealth, but this book is principally an introduction to the chakra system as well as a handful of yogic, Hindu, and Buddhist principles. There are quizzes throughout to help the reader assess their own experience, as well as frequent lists of ways to identify alignment or misalignment with creative intelligence and specific exercises and meditations for each chakra, making the material easy to practically apply.
I actually found the parts directly focusing on money the least compelling, as there is little focus on systemic factors and it seems odd the way a broader abundance consciousness is introduced, but then money is offered as an inevitable result of this consciousness, reinforcing the goal rather than challenging it. Chopra's language can also be quite binary, leaving little room for error in the application of principles. It starts to feel bootstrappy, as if any competent person can simply decide to change their wealth or other habits like unhealthy eating patterns. While I do believe mindful practices can change mindset and even influence reality, I can't help but wonder about Chopra's caste background given the way he talks about wealth. The virtue angle won't appeal to some readers, who may find the tone too blamey to relate. The focus is very individual, not about collaborating to overcome systemic problems, and there seems to be an assumption that the reader is middle-class and fairly happy with capitalism as an economic model. At times Chopra's writing comes across as straight-up bypassing or toxic positivity, without enough nuance applied to distinguish the power of intention from a "man over nature" kind of manifestation model.
On the other hand, I did find the focus on creative intelligence in pursuit of your dharma to be inspiring and helpful. Chopra's take on consciousness is radical and a little out there, but even readers who can't quite buy into the most literal interpretation of his teachings will likely find some useful insight in how the chakra system is laid out as an organization system that allows creative intelligence (wisdom) to flow. For each chakra, a theme is introduced and explored from a few angles. As a non-Hindu reviewer, I think it's important to note that I can't comment on how Chopra's interpretation of the chakras compares to others', or where it falls in relation to the commercializing and Westernizing of the system. But taken on their own terms, these chapters are accessible and guide the reader through some key principles of mindful living such as inherent enoughness, balancing reason and intuition, cultivating simple awareness, manifestation through intention, leading from loving intention in relationships, making space for things to happen in unexpected ways rather than forcing action, and seeing fulfillment as collective rather than individual or uniquely human.
If you approach this work through the filter of your own values, with an eye out for the ways the language may be catering to a particular audience, you'll find some useful takeaways. The overall message of abundance as natural, with an emphasis on getting your ego out of your own way, certainly has merit, and in general the recommended practices can be useful. I'll just pass on any recommendation coming from a male author telling me to resist less and smile more.
For 2022, and just where we are spiritually in the first quarter of this year this year with so much uncertainty, I needed this book. Some parts of it may seem a bit to “woo woo” and I get that, but having hope is always helpful. Deepak’s writing always centers me and this book did just that. It’s one I read fully and bookmarked chapters/pages for re-reading whenever I needed a refresher.
Even the most confident of us need so reassurance at times, especially when bumps come along in life. This was a book I needed and would recommend to all this year.
I’ve started practicing meditation and yoga almost a year ago and it was natural to start reading Deepak’s insights through his meditation app. I saw someone highly recommending this book and I though it was worth giving a try. I didn’t have high expectations and I was surprised with the insights and wisdom translated in this book. It isn’t not about wealth itself but how we align ourselves with our conscious mind to live a more fulfilling life. It gives some knowledge about yoga and meditation and explains how each chakra can be activated in order to give more clarity of thought. I definitely recommend this book for people who are starting to meditate and do yoga. In my personal experience, only when I started reading about the foundations and scientific benefits of both practices I was able to be insert it in my daily activities, therefore being able to gather the benefits of it. As Naval once beautifully wrote: “A fit body, a calm mind, a house full of love. These things cannot be bought - they must be earned.” So if you’re on a path to seek more clarity and a spiritual life, this is a must read. For people who are skeptical about those concepts, the book may seem too mystical.
I’m not sure what I was expecting but just left disappointed. It was mostly about aligning chakras. I really dislike quizzes in books too and I just felt like there was too many it disrupted the flow. I did underline several passages so some of the book was helpful. I do think the title is misleading too. He was arguing doing inner work and working on awareness leads to abundance which isn’t new. He mentions yoga a lot too which I think he assumes his readers would immediately understand the connection. I feel like the editors didn’t do much here to make it a cohesive read for someone who might not have read all of his books.
I'm not necessarily a fan of Deepak Chopra, but I truly got something out of listening to this audio version of his latest book. A lot was review for me, but it's always good to be reminded that abundance is available--within us and in the universe beyond. Too much focus in our society is placed upon what we don't have or what we should have instead of what we already have. I appreciated his attention the chakras and what they offer in terms of mind-body awareness.

Healing, power, desire and security complete your journey to abundance.
We’re now going to move into the chakras associated with points in your torso. First is Chakra 4, or the heart chakra, which sits in the center of your chest. The heart chakra encompasses all emotions – but particularly love, happiness, and empathy – and its gift is truly transformative. The heart chakra offers you healing by helping to release emotions that are stopping you from tapping into abundance.
Many people experience emotional poverty; they feel sad, helpless, and anxious or are afraid of intimacy. When we experience these difficult emotions, we often try to numb them, deny them, or avoid them because they’re too painful. But the heart chakra is your internal healer. Connecting with it will help you understand that deep happiness is always available to you – and that you don’t need to keep suffering.
In everyday life, this means paying attention to your feelings and acknowledging or expressing them. Doing this allows you to build close, healthy relationships with others; you’re able to share your feelings without the fear of being judged and can draw on the support of loved ones. Being connected to Chakra 4 allows you to gently blow away the buildup of experiences that cause inner pain, in the same way that you might blow dust off a mirror.
To connect to the heart chakra, meditate on the mantra “Yam,” or repeat the centering thought “I am love.” Meditating on a memory of a time you felt joyful will also foster your connection with Chakra 4. Visualize that moment in detail – it might be a wedding, watching a sunset with a dear friend, or listening to beautiful music. Focus on your heart and the joy that the memory evokes, and let it flow through you.
Moving down the spine, we arrive at the next chakra – the solar plexus chakra – which sits just above your navel, or belly button. This chakra is the domain of physical health, determination, and positive activity. Its gift is crucial; it brings you focused energy that transforms you into an agent of change.
In the frenzy of modern life, it’s easy to feel like you don’t have much personal power. You’re constantly being swept up by the demands of work, family life, and ever-present smartphones. Yoga teaches us, though, that personal power is inside us – which makes it infinite and completely unrelated to external forces. When you tap into this power, you have the strength and energy you need to put your goals into action.
Sadly, Western society has placed a lot of value on the complete opposite of this – multitasking and busyness. All this does is divide your attention and disconnect you from abundance, limiting your success. This is why so many people feel frustrated, stressed, and unmotivated at work.
To connect to the solar plexus chakra, meditate on the mantra “Ram,” or repeat the centering thought “I am in my power.” Give yourself permission to do just one thing at a time. Pay attention to how you’re feeling; if you become stressed or unfocused, pause for a moment to collect yourself. And turn off your phone for at least 30 minutes every day. Ideally, do something creative during this time, or practice yoga or meditation. You’ll be amazed by how quickly you start seeing results when you allow yourself to connect with your inner power.
You might have noticed that as we’ve moved along the chakra pathway, we’ve transitioned from the internal world of thoughts, knowledge, and feelings into the more external world of action. Chakra 2 – the sacrum chakra – takes us a step further into that world. Associated with the lower back, it connects us to everything sensorial, sensual, and sexual.
The gift of the sacrum chakra is desire. Desire motivates us to achieve our goals, no matter what they are. In that way, Chakra 2 is what drives us to fulfill our goals so that we can experience bliss.
When your awareness is activated, your focus is on what you truly need in order to grow, evolve, and experience bliss. When you experience bliss, you don’t crave anything at all because you feel fulfilled. This is quite different to how the ego behaves. Its desires aren’t sustaining; instead, it forces you to feed it the same thing over and over again.
To connect to the sacrum chakra, meditate on the mantra “Vam,” or repeat the centering thought “I embrace desire.” Just before you go to sleep, get into the habit of visualizing a moment of happiness that happened during the day. It doesn’t need to be anything major. You might have felt joy while watching your kids play or singing along to a song on the radio. Let the feeling of joy soak through you. This will train your mind to pay attention to bliss.
We’ve now arrived at the final milestone of our journey: Chakra 1, or the root chakra. Associated with the base of the spine, the root chakra provides safety and security. Its gift is that it grounds you so deeply into existence that you are unshakeable, no matter what’s going on around you.
When you’re connected with the root chakra, you become free to embrace absolutely everything – inside and out – without any fear. In practice, this looks like being solid in who you are, being comfortable in your skin, feeling physically and emotionally safe, and living in the present moment.
The root chakra connects us to the Earth, and then to the whole universe. Yoga teaches that awareness is in everything – in every single atom, including those that science would classify as nonliving. That means awareness has existed even longer than humankind. It also doesn’t distinguish between you and everything else; it merely is and is in everything – always.
If you have an intention, like meeting the right partner or finding the right job, you can make that intention a reality. Creating and maintaining a clear pathway from your crown chakra, where your goal begins its journey as an idea, all the way through to the root chakra, which connects you to the Earth, can transform your intention into the outcome you seek. This happens because there is no “I” as far as the universe is concerned; there is only universal consciousness and awareness.
The deeper your connection to the root chakra, the greater your powers of manifestation. This is what delivers dreams and thoughts into the realm of the physical world.
To connect to the root chakra, meditate on the mantra “Lam,” or repeat the centering thought “I am always safe and secure.” Foster your connection by regularly lying on the grass, somewhere sunny and peaceful. With your back to the ground, imagine yourself sinking into the Earth until there’s no distance between you and it. Feel Earth’s energy rising up to infuse you. Along with this energy, you’ll experience bliss and a deep certainty that abundance is available to you.

The journey to abundance begins by connecting with bliss, intuition and authenticity.
The chakras, which are located in your head and along your spine, are seven points associated with different parts of your body. Together, they create a pathway from your mind to the outside world. Every chakra is like a milestone on that journey, offering you a specific gift. When you’re connected with each of the seven chakras, the course is clear of obstacles – and abundance can flow through your life with ease. Following this pathway, we’re going to start our exploration of the chakras at the top of the head and finish with the final chakra that connects you to the Earth.
The crown chakra, known as Chakra 7, is the source of bliss. In Yoga, bliss means heightened consciousness; true bliss comes from truly knowing that you exist.
The crown chakra’s gifts are wholeness, oneness, and joy. It connects you to the source of abundance, where lack can’t exist. When you’re connected to the crown chakra, you know that you’re enough, just as you are. You may not yet have reached your full potential – but you know that the potential is already there, waiting for you to tap into it. Ultimately, Chakra 7 is what carries you to enlightenment, where you unite with being so deeply that your sense of self completely falls away. In everyday life, this takes the form of feeling inspired, alive, and awake.
To connect to the crown chakra, meditate on the mantra “So hum,” or repeat the centering thought “I am” in your mind. You should also be generous every day. This will deactivate your ego. Your ego is what keeps you in a state of lack, telling you that you aren’t enough or that you don’t have enough to share with others. That makes it your biggest obstacle to abundance. Being generous, which could be as simple as smiling at a cashier or helping a stranger carry their stroller up the stairs, honors abundance and shuts down your ego. Sharing what inspires you – a piece of music, a book, or a fact about a scientific wonder – is another way to connect with the crown chakra while lifting someone’s spirit.
The next milestone on the pathway to abundance is the third eye chakra located on your forehead. Chakra 6 is the source of highest intelligence. But we’re not talking about IQ or book smarts here. In Yoga, intelligence refers to insight, intuition, and imagination. Using these tools, the third eye chakra can provide a solution to any problem you encounter.
The third eye chakra connects you to knowingness – understanding important subtleties that carry insights. If you’ve ever experienced a breakup, you might’ve thought, If I’d known what my ex was really like, I never would’ve gotten into this mess! Statements like this suggest that you weren’t connected with your third eye chakra. If you had been, you may have seen your ex for who they truly were.
When you’re connected to Chakra 6, your mind is open and receptive. This means your perceptions aren’t blurred or muddied by your ego or biases. You feel confident and comfortable taking the time you need to think and reflect, and you aren’t swayed by fears or other peoples’ opinions. Your connection assures you that the solution to every challenge – even financial ones – is available. You just need to use awareness to identify it.
To connect to the third eye chakra, meditate on the mantra “Om,” or repeat the centering thought “I know.” You can also use the third eye chakra to shift away from busy mental activity toward intuition, where deep knowing lives. This is what leads to breakthroughs. Before you go to bed, state your problem clearly, followed by the outcome you’d like to have. Then, give your problem to the universe and detach from it. In the morning, listen quietly for the answer. It may not come to you immediately, so stay open and attuned to flashes of inspiration.
Chakra 5, or the throat chakra, is the next location on our journey. The throat chakra is all about self-expression in its truest form, and the gift it brings is authenticity.
You may have noticed that all the methods of connecting to your chakras involve words – repeating mantras or centering thoughts, or making clear statements. Words are powerful. We all know they contain meaning and subtext. When we speak them, they also carry tone, emotion, and power dynamics. By using words with awareness, you’re choosing to express yourself authentically. When you do this, you can speak without fear because the crown chakra has already grounded you in the knowledge that you are enough. This lifts you away from scarcity and into abundance.
When you’re connected with the throat chakra, you can use your words to communicate clearly and respectfully. You’re honest and authentic without being hurtful to others, and you feel heard. In a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere like this, mutually beneficial solutions surface quickly because everyone is at ease.
To connect to the throat chakra, meditate on the mantra “Ham,” or repeat the centering thought “I speak my truth.” You can also use your connection with the throat chakra to change the harmful stories you tell yourself about who you are. For instance, if you weren’t loved unconditionally as a child, you may find it hard to believe you’re enough just as you are. You may have repeated this story to yourself so many times over the years that you think it’s the truth. But by connecting with the throat chakra, you can change that story. Perhaps your parents’ behavior had nothing to do with you. Perhaps they were trapped by their own harmful stories. Using awareness, you can uncover new narratives that are more accurate than the ones you’ve been telling yourself. This will help you move toward knowing that you’re enough.

Meditation hones awareness.
So, how does this all come together to increase abundance?
Abundance occurs when we have everything we need and feel fulfilled. That second point is important. There are plenty of miserable wealthy people out there who don’t have the attitude of abundance we talked about earlier – who aren’t generous in spirit.
Practicing simple awareness will help you develop an attitude of abundance. That’s because when your mind is quiet, it’s impossible to feel like you’re lacking in anything. And if you want for nothing, it means you’re in your dharma.
Yoga teaches that there are seven key areas of awareness, known as chakras. Connecting with each of these areas through meditation will welcome abundance into your life. If your goals align with being in your dharma – meaning they speak to an attitude of abundance – then you can manifest them and transform that attitude of abundance into actual abundance.
Let’s have a look at the seven chakras in more detail now.

Awareness is essential for fostering abundance.
So, how exactly do you use consciousness to tune in?
First, let’s have a look at what consciousness means in this context. Yoga teaches that consciousness is dynamic – always on the move. Imagine it as an electric current flowing out into the world, on the hunt for something to connect to. In humans, consciousness is always looking for ways to create, discover, and experience joy. You can see this in toddlers. They’re innately driven to learn how to talk and walk, and they get so excited by each step they take and each new sound they make.
When consciousness is in action like this, Yoga calls it creative intelligence. But for the sake of simplicity, let’s refer to it as awareness. Awareness is responsible for evolution on both a large and small scale. Take, for instance, ancient humans who witnessed forest fires. All the other creatures fled or went into hiding. But humans looked at fire and saw potential. They imagined taming and creating their own fire so they could stay warm and cook their meals. This is awareness in action.
Awareness is the most powerful driver of change. If you don’t realize that something needs to – and can – change, everything stays the same. Our egos tend to tangle us up in hopes and fears, and this stops us from seeing a clear path to change. But if we increase our awareness, we can identify the path to wealth and abundance.
Practicing meditation regularly is a great way to quiet your mind so you can shoot those arrows as far as possible. But, of course, it’s not always convenient to put your schedule on pause so you can meditate. To counter this, pay attention to how you’re feeling. If you’re stressed, distracted, or disturbed by your thoughts, you’re not in a state of simple awareness. Ideally, find a place where you can be alone so you can close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
Even if you can’t step away from the situation you’re in, you can still give yourself a moment to pause, breathe, and recenter. This will encourage your mind to quiet. And just by being aware of how you feel means your battle is already half-won.

Living your best life is the key to ongoing abundance.
You’re probably hoping that you’ll soon know the secret to being wealthy. And if that’s the case, you’ve come to the right place! That’s exactly what’s going to happen. But we’re not going to explore investment models or financial planning. We’re going to look at how you can access abundance by being connected, aware, and authentic.
Before we jump into it, we need to understand the context a little better. Specifically, we need to define Yoga – with a capital Y. When most people talk about yoga, they’re referring to the combination of exercise and meditation, where you contort yourself into all different types of shapes and feel chilled out afterward. That’s yoga with a lowercase y.
Capital-Y Yoga includes exercise and meditation – and much more. It’s a practice that aims to unite what’s happening inside you – your thoughts and feelings – with other people and the physical world. When the inside and the outside exist in harmony, you feel whole and happy. And the way you achieve this is through raising your consciousness.
This leads us back to the reason why you’re here – money. Most people think of money as currency, or numbers in a bank account that are ideally increasing. But Yoga teaches us that money is actually a tool of consciousness. When you start increasing your consciousness, it transforms how you view money. Ultimately, your goal will shift from getting money for the sake of being wealthy to using money as a tool to help you live your best life.
So, what is your “best life?”
Well, when you’re living your best life, you have absolutely everything you need and aren’t struggling to get anything because abundance is flowing through you. When you have the support of your consciousness, you’re in a state where you can be endlessly generous in spirit. This has nothing to do with how much material wealth you have – it’s about attitude. Even the poorest person can be loving, wise, compassionate, creative, and honest. A person in this state is said to be “in their dharma.” And being in your dharma is the key to being wealthy.
You already possess all the qualities you need to be in your dharma. But if you’re like most people, you probably don’t know how to tune into them. That’s where consciousness comes into it. When you tune in, you start living according to your values – and that’s when abundance can transform your life.

Zihin ise bu doğal akışta kalmakta pek iyi değildir. Sürekli ya geçmişe gider (pișmanlıklar, travmalar, eski hikâyeler) ya da geleceğe (korkular, endişeler, beklentiler).

Deepak Chopra once again offers useful and inspirational advice in "Abundance: The Inner Path to Wealth." If you're thinking this is a "how to get rich" book, however, you are bound to be disappointed. It's really more about how to feel more contented with your life, how to take control of your life if you're not content, how to take steps toward finding more contentment and assurance that you're on the path in life you wish to tread--that kind of thing. The overall spirit of it is that, if you are feeling better about yourself and those around you, you're more likely to BE successful and have adequate resources to live your life. Even though today (as I write this review) I'm not functioning at the peak of my potential productivity, Chopra's words provide assurance that we have within our own power the ability to be positive, take steps to help ourselves and be content with our lots. Here's hoping!!!!
He starts to talk about aligning yourself with your true purpose in life, which really got me thinking. I started to talk to my friends about some of the big picture questions that he poses very early on so that you do some soul searching.
We discussed the big causes that we want to work on, and it made me realize that a lot of my time, money, and energy are not spent on the things that I personally believe are the highest priorities. While I will never be perfect, the book points out how you can move forward in the direction you want to go. I received a review copy from NetGalley.

Was excited to read this book that was just published last month! Against a backdrop of the teachings of Yoga and the seven chakras, quizzes, and meditation exercises, this brand new self-help book steers you towards a richer inner life of abundant possibilities, bliss, peace and gratitude. I'ld probably file this one under alternative medicine, new age and modern meditation.
I had 2 key takeaways, which were about how to find yourself and have a better work-life balance.

Some books arrive like old friends. Others enter like sudden winds that rearrange the curtains of your inner room. Chopra’s Abundance walked in like a polite guest with a quiet smile… and then proceeded to rearrange half the furniture in my mind. Not violently — but gently, insistently, the way a truth does when it’s been waiting far too long.
Deepak Chopra, of course, is no stranger to this particular art. For decades, he’s been the soft-spoken rebel of the wellness world — part scientist, part sage, part poet of consciousness — and at ninety books (yes, ninety!), you’d think he’d have run out of places inside the human spirit to explore. But Abundance reminded me that he hasn’t. Not even close.
The premise sounds simple on the surface: true wealth begins with the belief “I am enough.” Anyone who’s ever checked their bank balance five minutes after a motivational talk knows this is easier said than internalised. Chopra knows it too. So instead of offering shortcuts to abundance or a celestial ATM ask-and-receive model, he goes deeper, tracing the architecture of our scarcity mindset back to its quiet roots — fear, ego, fragmentation, and the strange ways we talk ourselves out of our own inherent wholeness.
But then comes the surprise. Halfway through the book, you realise this isn’t just a mindset manual. It’s also a chakra journey, an inner pilgrimage where each energy centre becomes a lens through which you examine your relationship with creativity, security, love, will, intuition, and truth. I didn’t expect that detour — in fact, at first, it felt like switching genres mid-conversation — but once I surrendered to it, the book took on a gentle rhythm, as if each chapter was a breath I didn’t know I needed to exhale.
Chopra’s prose in Abundance is exactly what you’d expect from someone who has spent his life studying both consciousness and human suffering: clean, measured, occasionally mystical, but always reaching for the same centre — a return to the true self. The true self, he says, is the fountainhead of abundance. Not abundance as wealth-but-nicer, but abundance as a flow state of creativity, clarity, and alignment. Think of Csikszentmihalyi’s “flow,” but viewed through the prism of dharma — a deeply Indian idea that your soul’s work is not what you do, but what rises naturally from who you are.

Is the book perfect? No, and that’s part of its charm. Readers expecting hard economics will find the “money” chapters broad and, at times, overly sanitized. Those familiar with chakras may feel the second half retreads familiar ground. And yes, the absence of citations is noticeable — especially in a world begging for intellectual accountability. But Chopra isn’t pretending to be your financial planner or your research professor. He’s attempting something else: to guide you toward a subtle shift in perception, a quiet inner tipping point where wealth stops being a chase and becomes a natural glow.
The larger question Abundance asks — and this stayed with me long after the last page — is not “How do I make more money?” but “What am I giving my energy to? Fear or possibility? Ego or awareness? Survival or creation?” It’s a timely question in a world where anxiety has become the default soundtrack of daily life.
My recommendation? Read this book the way you sip a warm drink on a cold morning — slowly, noticing the temperature change inside you. Don’t look for a formula; look for a shift. Don’t hunt for the “how”; breathe into the “why.” And if you let it, the book will offer you one gift above all: a gentle companionship back to the part of you that always knew you were enough.

Deepak Chopra gets mixed reviews from those in the yoga community, partly, I think, because of the way he has popularized and oversimplified quite complex aspects of Indian philosophy. For this reason, I hesitated to read this book. But because I have enjoyed two of his other books very much (Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul: How to Create a New You and Perfect Health: The Complete Mind/Body Guide), I decided to give it a chance. This book is about the concept of Abundance: it goes well beyond discussions about wealth and focuses instead on self-awareness, gratitude and the cultivation of an abundance of spirit. There are, for certain, no negatives in this message, and Deepak Chopra does present them in a way that is open, accessible and very, very practical. However, for those who are already familiar with the chakra system and with the concept of abundance as it appears in yoga philosophy, there is not much new here. This is a quick and comfortable read, but I didn't get as much out of it as I had hoped.
“Spirituality without renunciation is just luxury branding.”
America, for all its gestures toward spirituality, tends to conflate material success with moral or spiritual worth. The idea that someone could be poor and wise, humble, grounded, or even prophetic is deeply underrepresented in mainstream culture. In fact, it's often actively erased. Our media and institutions rarely valorize the kind of moral authority that comes from restraint, sacrifice, or integrity outside the market’s logic.
Historically, many traditions did center those figures: monks, prophets, saints, labor organizers, even certain folk heroes. They often weren’t rich. They stood outside the dominant system, or they got crushed by it—and that was part of their moral power. They could see what the system was doing, and they offered an alternative vision of the good.
But today, someone like that is often invisible unless they become a kind of brand. The system is good at absorbing and commodifying even its critics. That's part of what makes figures like Deepak Chopra feel hollow—he’s performing spirituality in a way that ultimately affirms the status quo, just wrapped in soft lighting and affirmations.
Two stars. Will not ascend. Will likely repeat the wheel of lives for at least a few more cycles.
Abundance was a surprise. I would change the subtitle from The Inner Path to Wealth to The Path to Inner Wealth. It’s not about using your mind to necessarily make more money, as I assumed. It’s more about tuning yourself up into a relaxed, secure, and fulfilled person, full of inner wealth as it were. Still a good book, but not what I expected. I’ve done process work, read other Chopra books, and knew much of the contents of the book before I read it, so I glossed over many sections.
Chopra’s main topic is accumulating spiritual wealth from a Buddhist perspective, and removing blocks to such wealth. He uses self-evaluation quizzes for readers to become acquainted with their personal blocks. Much of the book is about the chakras. He considers each in turn, with metaphors, meditation exercises, self-evaluations, mantras, and/or descriptions for each, plus advice for activating each chakra in turn.
Much of the information is for beginning spiritual practitioners, for whom I do recommend Abundance.
I read this book after reading the Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, and having a strong degree of familiarity with Chopra having listened to many of his lectures and seen him speak in person.
Having said that, this book was a major let down.
The structure was almost bothersome — such a departure from the organization of Seven Spiritual Laws.
The content itself was vague, and at least 70% of the book was explanations of the seven Chakras. Had the book been titled accordingly, perhaps I would’ve loved this book had I been approaching it expecting a deep dive on this system and its meditations.
But unfortunately — for one seeking this book amidst a career change, rut, exploration of a next job, etc. — this book severely lacks practical advice or context for where the rubber really meets the road.
I’ve tried hard to finish this book over the course of two months and I just can’t get it to resonate. I’ve thrown in the towel at page 130.
I think Chopra has some wonderful things to say, but this book was a letdown and a lesson in misleading titles.
Abundance by Deepak Chopra offers insight on achieving prosperity and wealth through ancient teachings and spiritual practices. Many of us tend to focus on what we don’t have and that places us in a lack mindset. By understanding the abundance of the universe, we are able to tap into an inner path that leads to all of our desires.
Abundance offers the perfect blend of information along with interactive features. Chopra includes questionnaires, which engages the reader versus having us just absorb information. My personal favorite interactive features include the meditations and mindfulness techniques. I enjoyed learning more about charkas, alignment, and the importance of letting go in order to receive. I also found the length of this book to be perfect. It’s not too long and not too short, it's just enough to cover the important teachings. This book offers some truly beautiful moments of wisdom—exactly what I’ve come to expect from Deepak Chopra. His spiritual insights and beliefs are often deeply grounding, and while I appreciated many of the themes he touched on, this wasn’t my favorite of his works.
The structure felt a little scattered at times. Certain topics didn’t seem to align clearly with the core message of abundance, and it made parts of the book feel slightly disjointed. Still, there are gems throughout the book. It’s not one I’d revisit often, but I’m grateful for the takeaways I did receive. If you’re a fan of Chopra’s work, you may enjoy it—just know it reads more like a stream of consciousness than a tightly woven guide.
