I found Olson's Meat Pies from a friend from Sweden. This book was originally printed in Sweden. In this story a man named Olson owns a meat pie company. He sells the most popular meat pies in all of Sweden. Until one day his bookkeeper runs off with all his money. Rather than call the police Olson decides the bookkeeper is a good man and he would try to survive. The company failed pretty quickly as Olson was using obscure objects to put in his pies. He is ready to shut down when the bookkeeper comes back from his vacation and apologies. The company then is successful again. The story contains photos that are racier than most american children's books. This story would be good to use in the classroom to teach morality. However, because of the inappropriate pictures I do not think I would use in a classroom to teach a lesson.
I read this book hundreds of times as a kid and I still have my original copy, and I’m 40 now. It’s one of those weird little stories that really stuck with me.
It’s sad and kind of dark for a children’s book, but there’s something about it that I’ve always loved. The tone, the illustrations, the strange little world it creates — it just hit me in a way that a lot of books didn’t. It’s hard to explain why, but it’s one of those stories that settled into my brain and never left. Definitely a forever favorite.
This is definitely not a typical children's picture book. It may not even be a favorite on the first read. But, the child will pay attention and it should be followed with a conversation about food safety laws.
