Noddy and Master Tubby Bear want to find the pot of gold at the foot of the Toy Town rainbow - even though they have to fly into scary Dark Wood. But this is a magic rainbow and it has plenty of surprises to for them!
Enid Mary Blyton (1897–1968) was an English author of children's books.
Born in South London, Blyton was the eldest of three children, and showed an early interest in music and reading. She was educated at St. Christopher's School, Beckenham, and - having decided not to pursue her music - at Ipswich High School, where she trained as a kindergarten teacher. She taught for five years before her 1924 marriage to editor Hugh Pollock, with whom she had two daughters. This marriage ended in divorce, and Blyton remarried in 1943, to surgeon Kenneth Fraser Darrell Waters. She died in 1968, one year after her second husband.
Blyton was a prolific author of children's books, who penned an estimated 800 books over about 40 years. Her stories were often either children's adventure and mystery stories, or fantasies involving magic. Notable series include: The Famous Five, The Secret Seven, The Five Find-Outers, Noddy, The Wishing Chair, Mallory Towers, and St. Clare's.
According to the Index Translationum, Blyton was the fifth most popular author in the world in 2007, coming after Lenin but ahead of Shakespeare.
They always say that there is a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow and when a rainbow appears over Toy Town, Noddy takes Master Tubby Bear along with him to see if that story is true. But he doesn't realise there is a price to pay should there be gold at the end of the rainbow!
When the rainbow first appears the residents of Toy town are excited. Miss Pink Cat likes the orange, Mr Wobbly Man likes the red and Tessie Bear likes the yellow. Noddy simply loves all the radiant colours but he is puzzled as to where the rainbow has appeared from because as he says, 'But it hasn't rained.' And that is why he sets out in his little 'plane to investigate.
Sly and Gobbo, the naughty goblins watch him set off in his quest and they plan to get hold of the big pot of gold that they expect to be at the end of the rainbow once Noddy has laid his hands on it. But Mr Plod preempts their plans as he overhears them planning and runs them off to jail!
On their way to the end of the rainbow Noddy makes up and sings a song which ends with the lines 'What great fun for you and me/To be as rich as rich can be.' They encounter some strange happenings once they land the 'plane and head towards the end of the rainbow and, sure enough, when they arrive at their destination there is a pot of gold.
Noddy hitches it to his 'plane and off they go back to Toy Town where Big Ears tells Noddy that the gold was put there to make the rainbow sparkle and now that it has gone, so has the rainbow. Tessie Bear is upset at this and she says, 'Oh, no! I loved all those beautiful colours!' and everyone agrees with her.
Noddy felt so awful that he took the gold back to where it came from, the rainbow miraculously reappeared and everyone in Toy Town was happy. They preferred being able to see the rainbow rather than have the pot of gold!
This is a typically sweet Noddy tale with all the usual jolly characters of Toy Town - plus Sly and Gobbo - and the usual colourful illustrations that make these books so good. Reading them is - for me whose first serious collection was of Noddy books - just like a second childhood!!!
