I was obsessed with this series when I was about 11 or 12. That was during my math geek phases, when I desperately wanted to be an astronaut. When I grew up. But I lived vicariously through these books, which were about 16 year-olds being groomed for a mission to not just get to Mars but colonize it. I read all the books, from the beginning when they're chosen for this elite program to the ending when they are really space colonists living in big domes on Mars. I found three of the books in a box a few days ago. And I was so excited to read them again. So Dan and I read this one together. We started with Book 2 because Book 1 wasn't in the box.

And, at 31, I saw this book as okay. It wasn't as good as I remembered. But it wasn't bad. It's a cool story and the writing is competent and it's too direct at many times but I guess that's okay for a young adult novel. It wasn't a disappointment. But there are other young adult books that I loved when I was 12 and recently read -- and some of those have astonished me because they were as good as I remembered. This book, it was okay. Not a disappointment. I didn't cringe. And Dan, for whom it had no sentimental value, he enjoyed it.
