The Clique #4

Invasion of the Boy Snatchers

Rate this book
The holidays are over and Massie's room is chock-full of new things from Santa: jeans, sweater, and a new . . . roommate? Once Claire unpacks, Massie's room feels more crowded than a Zac Posen sample sale. But what's worse, Claire isn't the only person moving into Massie's territory -- Alicia's hot cousin, Nina, shows up from Spain and starts edging in on all the Briarwood boys, including Massie's crush! Will Nina, with her super-tight mall clothes, make every boy in Westchester fall in love with her? Or will Massie toss her out faster than last season's Sevens jeans? The social minefields of Westchester County's most privileged middle school girls drive the page-turning action of this addictive series, set in New York City's most elite suburban county. The Clique . . . the only thing harder than getting in is staying in.

• i think this cover was my fav one. also i can’t rmr just how far i got in this series.
• thinking more broadly abt YA of this era, i’m wondering what the equivalent trending genre was for young male readers. or how these wealth porn books would have been written for them at all.
• this one feels extra mean spirited because it involves claire executing a scheme with no remorse. before this she usually had some reservations. all these mean girls are essentially the same— acting out in order to compensate for their own insecurities— but we are led to believe that nina is different somehow.
• imagine a YA book with a school bomb threat joke in this day and age, lmao.
• this book revolves all around the girls getting their first kisses or whatever, but the boys here are such nonentities. at the heart of each girl’s romantic conflict is the fear that she is either undesirable by men or lagging behind in development. which is probably the most realistic part of the whole thing and contributes to my theory that this series is at the end of the day more abt youth becoming cognizant of the restraints of femininity. blah blah blah

I gave up halfway through this series when I was in middle school so I have no idea how it ends! These books are hilarious, I'm still enjoying them now way more than I should be but they're just too good.

Seriously? This book, actually this series, makes me want to either a.) vomit or b.) gouge my eyes out with a very pointy fork.

First, what the hell is the point to this book? Is it "I'm twelve years old and I run the school; if you don't listen to me, I'll ruin your life"? Or is it "I don't like her - let's destroy her life"? Seriously? I WAS a twelve year. I know no one, who acted like that. Sure, there were bitches; but seriously?

Second, the way Massie puts everyone down is really annoying. I want to smack some sense into her. She puts even her friends down, and thats just sad. There aren't any redeeming qualities about her.

Third, the writing sucks. I'm not sure if it was the way the girls acted or if it was the writing that made me want to gouge my eyes out.

The only redeeming thing to come out of this book is Claire, who still has some of her old personbalty and her friend Layne, but she still doesn't save the book.

I'm not lying when I say this is the cringest book I've ever read. I already read the first 3 books (because why not) and they were... interesting, but Invasion of the Boy Snatchers took it to the next level. This book was way too funny and the second hand embarrassment was almost too much for me to handle, but it wasn't boring. This definitely doesn't deserve 4 stars but I'm gonna give it anyway for the interesting and unnecessary plot, the cringe characters, the teaming up between Massie and Claire, for the crazy school dance that involved fire alarms and Kristen getting arrest, and for this book being so unrealistic. Lol idk why I liked this.

In the fourth book of this series Claire and Massie are finally becoming friends, but the better friends they are, the more the other three hate them. The girls are excited about the Valentine's dance with all the Briarwood Boys... until Alici's hott new cousin moves in and starts to steal the boys hearts, and other things.(; I think this is a nice addition to the first three books in the series, but I think these books are really easy to read. Teenagers go through the same things as the OCD girls (boys, friendships, clothes, sports, ect.) but it seems like the books are at fourth grade reading level! I still read them though because they are fun! Lisi is a great author... but seems to make the girls in this book really stuck up. Massie and her Pretty Comittee only wear prada. I don't even own prada! I think thats where Claire comes in. She's the normal one that brings the girls back down to Earth. I like Lisi Harrison's style and I'm going to continue to read these books because they draw me in. Thats my favorite part about them, they are almost impossible to put down! She's definatley right about this though: The Clique... the only thing harder than getting in, is staying in!

first off, i can’t believe i’m still reading these books. something inside of me has unlocked- some ancient, buried memories from 6th-8th grade. it’s like i can’t pull myself away. “maggie, there is whole wide world of literature out there! you could read Secret History! you could read The Odyssey! you could read 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea!” no thanks, i want to read about alicia’s slutty cousin from spain and how she ruins massie block’s life!!

okay my actual review- this is the funniest book yet. a couple of lines actually made me laugh out loud. it’s also the book that humanizes Massie the most so far. I actually care when bad shit happens to her. Nina is an absolutely INSANE character and reading this now, as an adult and a middle school teacher, all of my red flags are on the field. get this girl to a therapist STAT!!!!

These books are still terrible but I’m still reading them! This one had some genuinely funny moments and it was interesting to see someone that could actually put Massie in her place. And I’m here for the Claire x Cam dramageddon. A loving 2.5 stars.

This wasn’t the best book in the series by any means, but I love that Claire is officially in, and can work and hang out with the Pretty Committee.

However, I find that I like the books most when it’s about the core dynamic. I don’t really care about all the boys! Give me the girls. Especially Massie. I love me some Massie.

Genre: YA
I remember starting this series back when i was a teen and i remember how much i loved it and all the characters as i still do.

The characters in this book were so funny and sassy at times and the setting was so beautifully described.

Can't wait to read more by Lisi in the future!!

It feels strange to rate a book I've outgrown five stars but this was my favorite of the series back in the old days, and for good reason. Childish as I see the storyline now, it's still somehow freaking hilarious.

Claire doesn't move (shocker) and the clique is happy as the day is long only for Alicia's cousin Nina to show up and quarrel with Massie. Sides are taken, some of the girls taking Nina's part initially despite their friendship with Massie. Then Nina (who is creepily over-sexed for a thirteen year old) goes after their boyfriends and they get cheesed off and run back to Massie.

Meanwhile Dylan catches the flu but is so frightened of missing the social scene at school she shows up whacked out on cold meds resulting in a hilarious scene during which she thinks she sees snakes wearing swim goggles and breaks down wailing, "Those are MY goggles, mine!"

Later she shows up still sick at a school dance and talks about "Kristen's mom going off," but her stuffy nose makes it sound like "Kristen's BOMB." Wackiness ensues.

Claire and Cam break up because he sees Claire kiss another guy, who happens to be Alicia's crush.

Nina is revealed to have been a geek in the past.

4th book in the Clique series.
This book was published in the early 2000s--Although not inexcusable, themes included in this book weren't called out as wrong at that time. Thankfully these ideas and themes are called out more often in present day as being inappropriate. This book has a lot of outdated, and quite frankly wrong, ideas. There is A LOT of slut shaming in this book. A character refers to something he thinks as stupid as "queer". Sexualizing young girls around the age of 12 and 13, etc.

Definitely the best book in the series because of all the twists and turns that occur in the plot. Love the character development of Massie and Claire in this book, and the ending is absolutely insane! I never expected Claire to kiss Josh AND have Cam see it. That’s juicy!

It's weird because this book kind of amps up the sexuality of the characters, making it way more apparent that they're in the 7th grade and not 17. Also, Nina is insufferable and even though I love seeing the girls team up together, she's such a drag on the story.

Invasion Of The Boy Snatchers
PLOT: Nina Alicia's cousin is visiting and she's the definition of POISON! She makes it her mission to go after all the Pretty Committee's boyfriends. Meanwhile, there's a Valentine's Day Dance and contest coming up. Massie thinks she and her guy (Derrington) will be the first in line to win the Cupid's Award and Claire plans to have her first kiss with her boyfriend Cam. Kristen and Dylan have a bet going on about who'll get kissed first.

MY THOUGHTS
*Seriously? If you're a parent and an amazing job opportunity came up you would NOT be swayed by your kids. You'd tell them basically "I am so sorry." As in I'm sorry you feel that way but guess what. And then there just happens to be convenient promotion and job offer waiting. And since when does Jay work for William? I never remember that being said.
*Is it wrong that I wish there a was a Glossip Girls lip gloss called Kristy Kreme? And that I checked to verify there wasn't? And that after reading the list of flavors I really wish they'd make that happen? It's probably one of the most times I've got excited in this series.
*The Velcro suit thing. VERY LAME! I agree with the guys! And then what kind of message is that? A woman needs to chase after a man? I don't think so!
*The kiosk thing. VERY COOL!
*I think this book is kind of dated. Short hair on a girl isn't considered undesirable or boyish by guys anymore. Unless that is Kristen has a Sinead O Conner thing happening. And even then she could work that. She'd be ahead of her time. I've seen models with that look.
*I see why Massie is so shallow. Her mother cares more about an exercise lesson than taking Claire to the doctor. And come on we all know she can afford to cancel the thing. All she has to do is probably make a call and she probably has instructor's on hand twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. Just SAD!
*God I HATE Massie! So your DOG is more important than your friend. Ok so I'm not a dog lover but the dog is in the BASEMENT in Inez's room. It's not getting SOLD. You can see it whenever you want. And then Claire will in your room for 2 weeks. Really? You can't stand to have your pet in another section of the house and inconvenience yourself for two whole weeks.
*And then speaking of shallow, how shallow are you to base your decision to go out with a guy on whether he wins or loses a game because it will make you both like losers and you can't have that?

RATE 6 I REALLY didn't like Nina or the message that (even though this is mostly true) guys will fall all over themselves if they see a pair of big breasts. Doesn't matter the personality. Doesn't matter she can be a lying, conniving, witch-like Nina. If you have big boobs. BAM! You're the instant winner of the Cupid's Award, every guy's desire's, and every girl's envy. So do I feel sorry for Nina for what happened to her at the Valentine's Dance? NOT AT ALL! I thought the pictures falling from the sky were kind of over the top, but did she deserve it? ABSOLUTELY! But then when you think about it Nina's supposed to be this high class, high maintenance, chick. But she's stealing bicycle locks and pencil cases. Come ON now Nina? You can buy that stuff at Walmart or the drug store. Maybe I can see her sister's designer boots. Those sound like they're actually worth something but the other stuff (shaking my head). I guess we can also mark sense off the list of the "wonderful" things about Nina. But then again I have heard of small-time thieves. I guess it's about the thrill. Then there's Claire. REALLY? The WHOLE book you're saying you don't want to just kiss any ole guy. You want your first kiss to be for love. Then why in the world would you turn around and kiss Josh? Sorry, Claire, you did that to yourself. I hope it was worth it because you let Massie (who has her guy back) screw you over with yours. Which even though they're friends now it's still kind of hard to completely trust Massie. If you knew she's in love with Cam ok I can see telling her to play hard. There's nothing wrong with playing a little hardball sometimes, but making out with another guy at a game where the guy you like is and can easily see. What kind of friend gives advice like that? The Valentines thing was lame! I'm sorry Valentines just isn't my thing. But Dylan getting "high" off cough syrup was kind of amusing.

When Alicia’s cousin Nina comes to town from Spain, she is not the dork that Massie saw in the pictures; instead, she’s basically a supermodel. The book never specified how THAT happened, but the point is, Nina is now the most popular girl at OCD and Massie goes out of her way to attempt to regain that title. Now that the synopsis is out of the way, here are my thoughts.

I don’t know if this is just me, but I personally think Nina deserved the “queen bee” status more than Massie did. I’ll never forget how I felt when I read “Besides, I kind of want to take Nina’s advice for now.” As far as I know, Nina didn’t discriminately bully people for no valid reason. Now, here they come: some fresh examples of Massie bullying in this book.

“Yeah, didn’t I throw iced cappuccino on her?” Massie covered her mouth innocently as if to say “Whoopsie.” Everyone laughed at the memory of Sage covered in iced coffee and fat-free whipped cream.

The edges of Massie’s mouth curled up and Claire knew that a clever cut-down was on its way out.

As far as I’m concerned, the only person Nina REALLY bullied was Massie, and that made me go “Awww, yeah!” (SO silly, I know.) I’m not going to spoil the sparkling water episode for you, but I just remember being like “FINALLY!!!! Massie got what she deserved." Of course, she got what she deserved again later on in the series, but I’m going to cross that bridge when I come to it.

My next point kind of ties into this. Massie’s mom and Claire’s mom are discussing whether or not to punish their kids for tardiness and detention and whatnot. Claire's mom is FOR punishment and Massie's mom is AGAINST it. I don't remember the exact wording that the book used, but it’s yet another example of the atrocity called "Massie’s parents never punish her," which I’m not going to shut up about as I venture further into the series, so it's best to get used to it. I forgot to bring up another example in my rant-review for the second book: “When I got home, my dad gave me a two-second speech about obeying school rules and went right back to downloading an audio book off the internet.” I’m going to go play a violent video game and pretend the bad guys in said game are Massie. POW! POW! POW!

Yay! I beat my high score! I feel better.

One more thing that kind of rubbed me the wrong way was that there was lots of talk about Nina’s “big boobs” or whatever, and making inappropriate jokes about it. I’m talking high school sex humor. You know how middle school as “potty” humor and fart jokes and the like? It seems THIS middle school skipped over that level and jumped the gun to grown-up sex humor. Or is that just me? There is something in the next book that made me feel this way as well, so keep an eye out for that in my next rant-review.

Mr. Lyons received a job offer in Chicago, but no one wants the family to move away. Mr. Block promotes Mr. Lyons giving him enough money to give the guest house an extreme makeover. Until the house is done being built, the Lyons must live in the Block’s home. Claire is allergic to Bean, messes up all the clothes Massie lends her, cries loudly at night over losing Cam, and has a hard time getting a turn in the shower. They make a deal to make peace by having Claire sleep in the bath tub. All the while, Alicia’s flirtatious cousin Nina from Spain is stealing all of the girls’ crushes. Many look to Nina for boy and clothing advice including Kristen and Dylan, and Alicia, Massie, and Claire’s picks for the dance; Josh, “Derrington,” and Cam end up taking Nina to the dance instead of them like they were supposed to. It turns out that Nina is also a real thief as she has been taking a lot of people’s possessions. It takes a few operations and detentions until they finally find evidence, her stash of stolen items. At the Love Struck Dance when she Nina is awarded the Cupid Award with Derrington they completely humiliate and expose her. They had her heels sawed off so she trips, then Alicia reveals Nina’s stash of stolen items causing Nina to be bombarded by angry people, and old, ugly pictures of Nina are spread to everyone. Nina leaves America the very next day only to be welcomed by her furious, older sisters because Nina had taken their boots and such. They all go to the soccer finals and Derrington, the star goalie, gets hit in the face after Massie wishes he would be, so they most likely lose. Derrington asks Massie to meet him and she learns the reason why he’d avoided her is because Nina lied and said that they had to if they wanted to win the soccer game. She gives him an M brooch to remember her and he gives her the Cupid award that would’ve been given to her had Nina not forced him to come to the dance with her. Claire takes Massie’s advice and flirts with another boy, Josh, whom Alicia says she’s over. She ends up having her first kiss with him which Cam sees and is upset by. He had only avoided her because of Nina’s Spanish soccer spell which he though Claire knew about but she didn’t.

The characters were well developed as always, and I feel as though Claire is gaining confidence and a stronger relationship with Massie. Nina was a very interesting character and I thought the girls most definitely got their revenge at the end. I’m glad she’s gone because she was making everything complicated. I was shocked that Claire had kissed Josh and not Cam, too. I can’t wait to read the next book of course.

This book is about a group of girls called the "Pretty Committee". They are the total "It Girls" of the school. The people in the Pretty Committee were Massie, Alicia, Dylan, Kristen, and the new girl Claire. They are all supposedly beautiful besides Claire. She wears ugly clothes, has greasy bangs that go straight across her forehead, and an awful since of fashion. Throughout the previous books, the Pretty Committee go on a and off with liking Claire. They are pretty much forced to be with her non-stop because her family lives in Massie's guesthouse. it was only a temporary move because Claire was just staying there until their family could get the Claire's dad a new job. Then they would be able to afford a house of their own. Massie and Claire become really close after a while and Massie starts to think of Claire as her sister. When Claire's family decides to move back to Chicago, Massie and Claire are crushed. They Finally convince Claire's dad to let them stay. Massie and Claire hang out a lot so when they went to a party together they met Alicia's cousin that was originally from Spain. She is stunning with beauty and all the the Pretty Committee's boyfriends like her. Her name is Nina. Nina acts really nice and innocent but she secretly is trying to steal all of the girls' boyfriends. I liked the book a little but i thought the point was pretty stupid. I really like Claire because she is sweet to everyone and is not the least bit self-centered. Massie is probably my favorite character, because she is really cool and has a great since of fashion. Everyone likes her at the school. I don't like Kristen and Dylan because they think they are "all that". They are really sassy. I hated Nina because she was just self absorbed and was just plain rude. I really like Alicia because she is really pretty and has a lot of friends. She isn't only friends with the Pretty Committee; she is also friends with others outside of the group. It makes her seem a lot less Cliquey than the other girls. I recommend this book to girls because it talks about girl things a lot.

What would you do if you were queen bee? If you had the whole school in the palm of your hand? Massie Block has just that and she's not about to let it slip away. Especially not to Alicia's cousin from Spain, Nina. Nina is Massies biggest competition and all the boys seem to love her. Massie is going from the "it" girl to just second best and she won't stand for it, Nina has to go. Ever since she showed up from Spain she's been taking things that aren't hers; Massies friends, boyfriend, and Gossip Girl lip gloss. The question is how? How does Massie terminate her threat? With the help of her friends, Alicia and Claire, they brainstorm a brilliant plan to knock Nina down, so they can climb to their rightful positions at the top.
I wanted to read this book because I've already read the first three and I adored them all. I really like this book because these girls dress in a lot of designer brands that I know about and it's pretty cool to be able to be able to make that connection and think "Hey I have a purse from there" or "I went shopping there a few times". I definitely recommend this book for girls who love petty drama. It's a fairly fast read, I finished in within a day or two. This book really isn't for guys, it's more of a girly girl book.

This book was amazing! Massie has an upper class life, with her own sized mannequin,(for her and her dog). When her and her pretty-committee are living just fine, Claire, an old family friends daughter, moves into Massies bedroom, and disrupts everything! From going from an annoying person whom she is stuck to be with, to being the person she ditches her friends to be with her. To make it even more dramatic, Alicia, Massies BFF, brings in her cousin from Spain who recently looked like a geek in all of the pictures, and takes away all of their crushes, who were on the brink of being their boyfriends, and swoons them all. When sabotages go wrong, and she becomes ever MORE popular than she already is, the girls will do anything to stop her. Will Massie, Kristen, Dylan, Alicia, and Claire get back their boys, or will they be thrown out like Massie's month-old clothes? I definitely recommend to girls in Middle School and up, and this book is definitely a must read if you like girls books with drama and humor. There is a series made up of 14 books and have been continuing to read every one!

AH-MAZING!! Hilarious at times, but nerve wracking at others. It was a book you couldnt put down... it was like you would think it would be boring but then it is AH-vious its a great book. It was juicy with lots of drama and gossip.

Nina, Alicia's cousin comes from Spain to be in the semester at OCD, (Octivian Day Country School) she is really good at flirting with boys and gets a lot of attention from them, when they find out Nina is a copier, cheater, lyer, and stealer, they want to catch her in the act...

They finally find out Nina has told Alicia, Massie, and Claire's boyfriends, and crushes about "The Spanish Soccer Spell" she told them that they ad to stay away from Massie, Claire and Alicia until after the match if they wanted to win the soccer finals. But NINA TOLD THEM THE GIRLS WERE OKAY WITH IT!!! Claire was so mad at Cam, (her Boyfriend) and he didnt explain after the match either, that she kissed Josh Hotz, Alicia's crush... That was an OMG moment for me... so Cam got mad at Claire, but this is all in the fifth book...
