(The World's Greatest First Love) #1

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi: Die Story von Ritsu Onodera 1

Rate this book

I really liked the material about how manga are produced. What a freakish schedule! Although, amusingly, the author suggests that everyone involved is doing a bad job.

I also liked the main character and his committed effort to be good at a job he isn't prepared for and didn't want in the first place. I've asked myself many of these same questions regarding manga. Hopefully more of them will get answered. That hair-color changing thing always confused me...

Not sure how I feel about the romance part. I'm in general not a fan of workplace romances, especially where one party is the other's superior. But it is interesting that the two remember things so differently. That's probably accurate as to human psychology.

Note: It's a review for vol. 1 to vol.4 of the manga.

Sekai ichi Hatsukoi, means 'Number One First Love in the World' in English, is a yaoi manga (boy's love comic) series by Japanese manga-ka (comic's author) Shungiku Nakamura (also author of Junjo Romantica). The manga series was adapted into an anime series in 2011.

The story focuses on Onodera Ritsu, a 25 years old former literary editor who suddenly finds himself having to struggle for survival in the shojo manga (girl's manga) industry. At first sight, his new job as a newbie girl manga's editor looks far from promising, not only he has to deal with massive workload and impossible deadlines, he also finds himself working with a bunch of weird coworkers, his boss the chief-editor, Takano Masamune has also been acting less than friendly from the very beginning. Plus things take a downward spiral when Ritsu realizes his boss was in fact the same guy he had fallen in love with 10 years ago, it was his first love but their relationship had ended badly due to a gross misunderstanding. When Takano vows that he'll make Ritsu fall for him again, let's prepare for the ensured drama and heartache!

So far I'd finished reading the first 4 volumes of Sekai ichi Hatsukoi (read the fourth volume online because...I can't wait!), and it's already my most favorite yaoi manga in the recent period. The idea of yaoi romance with the girl manga's industry as the background is a refreshing one, and the author had thrown in a lot of jokes and light hearted moments to make her story a lot of fun. Beside the main plotline of Takano and Ritsu's relationship, later on things only get even more interesting when Ritsu's coworkers also start having their share of relationship's ups and downs.

I also like that the main characters are working adults, so instead of the story focusing entirely on the romance, the characters also have other concerns that older readers can relate to: career choice, friendship, human relationship problem etc; adding a realistic touch to the story.

Ritsu's reaction (mostly shock and disbelief) to the craziness wonder that is girl's manga and how things are done in the business is always comical and funny. My thought on Ritsu's struggle of adjusting into his new trade was basically like this: "Oh dude, be thankful that you're only working for the girl manga department, if you got thrown into the yaoi manga department, I honestly don't think you can survive a day.XD"

If you were a manga's fan and were curious about how mangas come into being, then beside the romance plotline, Sekai ichi Hastsukoi also offers you a comedic inside-look into the manga's industry itself.

Furthermore, through Ritsu's point of view, we can also see from a self-proclaimed jaded, unromantic guy's perspective on the romance-focused, partly surreal, dreamy world of girl manga, it also provided a lot of satire to the usual girl manga's formulas, e.g. love at first sight, happy there after ending, girls' silky hair and clothes start flowing beautifully even when there's no wind, things go randomly sparkly and flowery whenever there's a romantic scene, etc etc. The satire is quite heart-felt.

*slight plot-spoiler warning*

But the biggest satire may well be the fact that despite Ritsu's claim of disinterest in love, relationship and happy there after, it turns out his relationship with his boss (and ex-lover) Takano is in fact, filled with typical girl manga's factors/cliches. As a result there are handful of humorous moments of Ritsu screaming at himself "Wake up! Things won't work out like they do in girl's manga!", which never fail to provide LOL.

So let's do the cliche checking before we continue:

In love at first sight? Check.

Dreamy, beautiful love confession scene with flower petals falling down? Check.

Secret crush for an attractive upperschooler? Check.

Inability to forget a first love even after 10 years time? Check.

Stubborn lead who denies his own feeling? Check.

Jealous former lover steps in to stir up trouble? Check.

The main couple struggle to overcome past misunderstanding and try getting back together? Check.

Drunk confession and hot sex scene afterward but the drunk person completely forgets everything in the next morning? Check.

*end of plot spoiler*

Let me tell you that I'm a person who usually dislike cliches a great deal, but in Sekai ichi Hatsukoi, the cliches are so nicely handled, and the story so interesting that I actually don't mind the cheesiness much.

The artwork is awesome, from time to time the pictures are completed with typical girl manga's style flowery background, sparkling stars toner, cute little rabbit ornaments, adding a warm, dreamy tone to the story, but the author also managed to keep her drawing clean and simple without making the pictures look downright girly and cheesy. All of the characters are beautifully drawn, especially Takano, hell it should be illegal for a manga/anime guy to be so damn hot and sexy!

I also like how the relationship between Ritsu and Takano develops, how they try to get over doubt, insecurity and anger, one step at a time. Just as equally enjoyable to read is how the author described the strong attraction between her two leads through small details and cleverly designed plots, how Ritsu tries to stay away from Takano but fails again and again. Even though I can't help noticing some of the characters' behaviors might not be entirely agreeable, but in overall the characters don't have flaws which are too over the top that makes them unlikable.

It's a story balances itself finely between wild, happy-go-lucky comedy and heart-throbbing romance. If you're fan of yaoi romance comedy who prefers yaoi with loveable characters, a little sense of realisticity and solid build up for the romance, I strongly suggest you to read Sekai ichi Hatsukoi.

I'm still wondering how come this manga is popular or this mangaka... or this quantity of clichés is actually legal...

I discuss sexual assault in the latter half of this review, if that is something that may trigger you.

I would rate the publishing element of this a whole 5 stars for the amount of depth the mangaka goes into it. I really feel like I came out of this having learnt a lot from it. I'd also rate the writing of the main character high, because he's very compelling and layered, someone with experience in publishing who is still learning, something that's quite rare when writing characters. It's tiring seeing people be experts and learn nothing in their field, and I appreciate that he's also not smug about any experience, just sees things as a way to grow.

However, I would have rated this 1 star if it wasn't for the main character because of the sexual assault. The love interest pushes the main character into more than one sexual act and ignores the main character literally crying and begging him to stop. It's awful, and left me feeling so uncomfortable, especially when the main character immediately rushes to his room and cries and talks about feeling out of control, and then it's brushed off so the love interest gets away with sexual assault and can be redeemed. I hated that, and I won't be carrying on with this series.

I liked this! This was cute and really funny. I'm still amused that there seems to be a manga for every kind of scenario you can think of (but really, it does seem like a dream come true for the part of me that's still a teenage girl ridiculously fond of silly m/m romances). This one is set in a manga editorial department.

I will say that there are still some things I find a bit weird, but what's really interesting for me is to see how I'm learning to read and appreciate this medium. I can think of a few examples that I really didn't like, as well as some that I liked a lot, and - right, I know this sounds silly, but I know I'm not the only person who does that sort of thing: A few weeks ago I thought I didn't like manga as a whole and now I've already learned that that's not true. Ok, that doesn't have much to do with this manga specifically, but it's something I apparently need to remind myself of. (This isn't just true for manga, either - I mean, just look at the different samples of chick lit I've read this year: one was absolutely horrible, one was adorable and one was okay.) The lesson may just be that one shouldn't just dismiss an entire genre or medium. *gasp* (I suspect that may even be true for "vampire" fiction, but I'm not willing to go there just yet.)

Anyway! This is a learning process for me, and I'm having a lot of fun and it is awesome that there's always more to discover when it comes to reading. :D

I'm just giving this a 1/5 rating because I thought it was pretty funny and entertaining most of the time - but I wanted to give it no stars at all for romanticizing rape. What happens in the scene in one of the character's apartment is rape. Ritsu constantly says that he does not want this and the other guy ignores it. No means no and as soon Ritsu said No the other guy should have stopped.
Besides, I find the whole story to be somewhat questionable: the other guy (I really can't remember his name and am too lazy to look it up) is sexually harassing Ritsu and the excuse for this behavior is his "love"? Yeah, fuck that. That is bullshit.

I seriously cannot believe how this can be one of my best friend's favorite manga. Some of the scenes are disgusting.
And no, I'm not homophobic. I'm against rape and sexual harassment, which this manga glorifies and romanticizes. That's a no-go for me, as it should be for everybody.

Was it problematic?? ...... yeah
Did I enjoy it?? ...... yeah
The relationship wasn’t the best but I can see the potential, the art style isn’t my favourite but I LOVED the behind the scenes of manga publishing and that was definitely my favourite part 🖤

Review originally posted on The Book Adventures of Annelise Lestrange :)

This review contemplates this series until volume 9!

The Story

Ritsu Onodera is the heir to one of the biggest publishing companies in Japan. He loves his job as a book editor more than anything in the world and has been living the dream since he left college and started working.

Perfect? Perfect.

But there is one thing that really bothers Ritsu: everybody assumes he’s got his job and is good at it because he is taking advantage of his dad’s position as the president and owner of the company. And, as it isn’t true, Ritsu is determinate to prove that he can be the best book editor in the world anywhere without his dad’s help.

So he quits and leaves behind his perfect life to end up on the shoujo [romance] manga division of Marukawa Shoten publishing company.

And directly into the hands on the most tyrannical manga editor of all times: Masamune Takano.

As if things couldn’t get worse, Ritsu starts to feel that he knows Takano from somewhere and the feeling seems to be reciprocal…

The Analysis
Just remembering that those are my impressions and opinion as a reader :)

This title was another tip from dear Hachiyumi, responsible for the entry of some of the best manga titles ever in my life, like The Tyrant Falls in Love, Ten Count and Super Lovers. I already knew that I would love it, as she knows my tastes almost better than myself, but wow. THIS SERIES IS SOOOO COOL! It explains in detail how a Manga Publisher works and shows their very difficult routine. As a journalist and a manga lover, I was swept away for all the knowledge that came with my delicious gay romance. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi started as a 4 stars series for me because of the art, that was a little weird, but now evolved into a full 5 stars series!

The narrative follows Ritsu’s point of view almost most of the time, especially on the beginning, but as the story goes by and the other guys in the publishing company gain relevance and their own parallel stories, we start to see the story from almost everyone’s point of view. AND I LOVE IT.

The plot is simple, but has a lot of room for anything to happen, as it is the kind of manga that follows the character’s everyday life. Of course, the story has a point: Ritsu needs to fall in love again with Takano, his high school boyfriend that broke his heart (and had his own heart broken by Ritsu). But until then – and even after, if you ask me, there’s so many nice things that can happen! And things get really tangled when the secondary characters become main characters on their own stories. They also have their problems to solve and stay with their respective lovers, so it is all too exciting!

I wanted to take my time reading this series, as a new chapter is out only every four months at time (just like Super Lovers, may I add…). Seriously, this kills me, but moving on. I couldn’t stop reading! I read volume one and held myself, but as I read the next one, I was doomed. I almost cried when I reached the last available chapter, as only God knows when the next one will reach English readers now.

The characters are the best part of this title. I wouldn’t classify them as the strongest point, as we’ll get there, but definitely they are what would appeal the most to any other person in the world besides myself and Hachi, haha! Ritsu is a good protagonist, not overly dense or cocky, but not helpless and pathetic either. Takano is a dominant and stubborn boss that will do anything to get his mangas published right and in time and to get into Ritsu’s pants. [spoiler alert: Takano always gets what he wants, so he got into Ritsu’s pants several times.]
enough romance lets fuck.gif
that would be Takano lol

I find highly amusing Ritsu’s perpetual denial of any good feelings that grow inside himself for Takano during the story and that’s new for me. I usually have no patience with indecisive characters, but there was just something about Ritsu that made me love him. To be honest, I love all the characters in this series, haha!

However, I must insist that the strongest point ever in this series is the backstage of the manga publishing companies in Japan. This is the kind of knowledge that you usually only have if you work in the area or is very close to someone who does it. Seriously, it was priceless for me to see how my lovely babies are born and now I want to thank all the editors that brought me the manga titles present on my collection!! <3 THANK YOU, GUYS!

Now, let’s talk about Nakamura-sensei’s art. It definitely evolves during the series and gets so much better… Here’s a comparison between an image on the beginning of the series and one more ahead. Nakamura-sensei isn’t fooling around by any means, haha!

Overall, if you like gay titles, are deeply interested on how this crazy manga publishing world works and love real and alive characters, just stop whatever you’re doing and go read Sekaiichi Hatsukoi!!

That’s it, thank you for reading!

Nakamura Shungiku Has a special place in my heart. I love this romance even more then I did the original series. I'm not sure why. Maybe because they were childhood loves that found each other. Or maybe because how much they truly care about each other. Idk but this Sekaiichi Hatsukoi means the world to me! It's so much more then a boys love story.

My favorite couple is Onodera x Takano they are just so prefect together. I also like the role reversal Onodera chased after Takano when they were younger and now that they are older Takano is chasing after him.

I do hope that Onodera starts to open up to him soon. Him pushing away Takano all the time is really starting to break my heart. I understand he's afraid of getting hurt again but it was all a misunderstanding so they should just be together already!

The World’s Greatest First Love was the first anime i’ve ever watched completely. Now, it is the first manga I’ve ever read completely. Funny, huh? Which is why this series is always in the back off my mind. To give a basic summary, this is a story about two guys who dated in high school and were completely in love with each other. However, due to their ego and other things they broke it off. Ten years later, Ritsu (the younger of the two), transfers to a new company because he was tired of being accused of getting a position because of family connections. He gets a job at Marukawa publishing as a manga editor and turns out Masamune Takano is his boss.

Warning: I should probably add that there are a few instances of sexual assault. I don’t even know whether to call it that. Sexual assault is such a strong word.

Hm. Not what I was hoping for. I was so bored through all the work talk and the romance wasn't good enough to make up for it. I was hoping for something cuter. I reallyyy liked the art style though so I'm super disappointed.

Sekaiichi Hatsukoi Volume 1: ????? Stars
[😳😐😖😅... - I don't even freaking know... a 6? but that's like a 4 Star and that's... sort of accurate but I also can't give it 4 Stars - aarghhh >.< ]

I HATE THIS xD I cannot for the sake of me figure out how to rate this manga.
To clarify: I do not hate this manga - I hate the fact that my brain can't decide what to do about this manga.

Anyway I had previously seen the first 20ish? episodes of the anime adaptation of this manga (approx. 7 years ago) - hence I knew what I was gonna get. I knew there would be romanticized sexual assault. I knew that. BUT I STILL LIKE THIS AND I DON'T LIKE THAT.

Okay - listen, this is gonna be a mess and is just to figure out my brain right now - Takano is a fucking creep (who had sex with a 15 year old when he was 17 - who clearly didn't know if he even wanted this - at least that was the one time he got a yes from Ritsu - but... still. 15 and 17 is a big difference - especially when it is the day they first have a conversation - I just-) and he is sexually assaulting our main character constantly. Disregarding the word "No" and forcing himself on him - so why - the hell - do I want to give this 4 stars? I wish I could say it was because I want to see this toxic relationship play out and burn - but that's not where this manga is going and I know that. and... i... kinda... - I ship them okay. There. There we have it. And I hate it. I think it's the fact that (a) the author actually uses the term sexual assault herself when our MC thinks about what the Love Interest does - so it is sort of self aware and I appreciate that and (b) that our MC obviously pines after Takano if he admits it to himself or not and i am a hoe for pining. Simple as that.
-I also remember shipping them when I was 13 and 13 year old me didn't see all these issues okay (and yet I remember the sexual assault aspect ey... maybe I did see it all and just didn't care...) - so I was attached to them already-

I am not gonna give this 4 Stars - hell no... I want to. But I can't.
I adore the editing/mangaka aspects and the Squad and the romance (even though I hate that i do) - but I don't want to give a manga that romanticizes sexual assault and rape a good rating - I am not gonna do that.

So essentially I liked this a lot and I hate that. Because this is a yaoi manga written by a female author who romanticizes sexual assault. But hey - here i am liking it anyway.

I'm reading this because I wanna get my owned tbr down and I own the first 2 - so I shall read Volume 2 soon and then I guess I'll get rid of volume 2 and keep volume 1 around in my little "I read this but I will not buy all the other books in the series" section. Because i will not give this series my money. I might eventually read on further though...

This is my mind dump if you are reading this I am very sorry indeen.

This review originally appeared on my blog, Books Without Any Pictures: http://bookswithoutanypictures.com/20...

I was at Barnes & Noble a few weeks ago, and as I was looking at books/manga, we heard an announcement, “Due to an emergency, the store is closed, as of this moment. Please check out now and leave the store immediately.” So, of course I panicked and bought the books that were in my hand at the time. One of them was The World’s Greatest First Love, Vol. 1, a yaoi manga about a guy named Ritsu Onodera who starts a new job, only to find out that his boss was his high school crush that he’s never gotten over.

One of the coolest things about The World’s Greatest First Love is that it’s set in the manga publishing industry, so you get to learn a lot about the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing the manga that you enjoy. It’s pretty meta. Which of course sets off a vicious cycle where I want to read all the manga, and then I start buying all the manga, and then my bank account hurts. But I digress…

When the story starts out, Ritsu is bitter and depressed. He’s kind of messed up from a relationship that he had in high school, where he expressed feelings for a guy, and the two of them got together, but then something happened between them, and now Ritsu is jaded. So he’s thrown himself into his career as an editor, but everyone thinks his career success is because his dad was the owner of the company and gave him special privileges. So he takes a new job with a different publishing house. He wants to be a serious person editing serious things, but then he gets thrown into the shojo (aimed at girls) manga department, and he’s bitter about it.

But then Masamune Takano, who is now his boss, realizes who he is. And whatever happened between the two of them didn’t destroy the feelings that he had. He tells Ritsu that he’s going to make him fall in love with him all over again. And that’s the start of what I assume will be a redemption arc where Masamune’s hotness and persistence will wear through the walls that Ritsu has put up around his heart, and a beautiful romance will ensue.

As I mentioned in previous manga reviews, I love that this is a story about grown-ups. So much anime and manga is about teenagers in high school, so it’s nice that while this one has flashbacks, it’s about career-driven adults.

I really really liked this one, and I hope that I can find more of the series soon! And I know that there’s also an anime of it on Crunchyroll, so I may jump over and try that too.

Please note I read vol 1-3 in one book

What the hell did I read. Firstly I didn't click that this was a queer book, even though the cover shows just that oops. But this just felt borderline sexual assult, molestation, near enough rape. I can't quite get my head around how this is a possible romance? It's to me one overbearing, controlling, manipulative, angry arsehole. I am honestly sat with my mouth open still shocked at what the hell I read, and since it's manga it's more illustrations than text. I just can't understand.

We follow Ritsu Onodera fed up of his family connections landing him jobs he quits his current job as editor at his Dad's business and transfers to Marukawa Publishing. Once there he's assigned to the shojo manga editorial department-something he has no interest in or experience. He has to work on manga stories about love something he hates after swearing off love  years ago. On top of that he soon finds out his boss, Masamune Takano, is actually his first love from high school.

I thought this book would be fab as it sounds it but the only good thing about this manga, was actually learning how mangas are made. It is the only reason this has a star rating and why I continued reading (although I was waiting for the actual cute romance to hit....it did not!)

I genuinely am confused on how this manga is out in the public to read. It's honestly approaching sexual abuse in a horrific way-making it look like it's a normal and right thing to do. I'm never one to agree on banned books, but this should be on that list in my opinion. I don't think I'm ever going to take back what I read!!!

I want to make something clear:
I. HATE. STEREOTIPICAL. CHARACTERS.

Shungiku Nakamura is drawing what I hate the most, but everyone says this is "One of the most beautiful love stories".

This one contains a cute, small, adorable, "tsundere" uke called Onodera Ritsu, who refuses to admit his "feelings" for Takano Masamune, a tall, handsome, macho seme. What is the difference between these two and the principal characters of a shojo manga? A dick.

Let's talk about the plot. Takano and Onodera have a past, a high school romance, and because of a misunderstanding they won't see each other for years, until they met again at the publishing company Marukawa Shoten. At first sight, they don't recognize each other, and when they discover the truth the problems arrive.

The childhood love is the good part, the romantic, the cute, the bearable part.

The after-recognizment plot will be full of non-consensual sex (rape with a better name), insecurities "cured" with non-consensual sex, sadness about why having or not non-consensual sex, and hate feelings becoming love after non-consensual sex. Best plot ever, yay.

main actor nya sih ritsu Onodera and Masamune Takano (sebelume tu Masamune Saga).. cowok guy, yang dulunya (semasa SMA) saling jatuh cinta.. kawaiiiiiii!!! setelah 10 tahun ga ketemu gara2 Ritsu yang salah paham ma Takano (dia kira Takano cuma main2 ma dia.. padahal juga dah melakukan xxx)akhirnya mereka kembali bertemu di perusahaan penerbitan Marukawa. si takano nie Editor shoujo manga yang terkenal banget coz manga2 yang diterbitkan selalu jadi best seller... Ritsu yang sebelume jadi editor literratur (novel) ditempatkan di bagian Emerald (editor Shoujo manga).. padahal da belum pernah sekalipun pegang atau baca manga..

BL manga karangan Nakamura sensei nie dah ada animenya..
Yaoi yang kereen menurutku cuma Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi and Junjo Romantica, yang lain baru liat anime2nya..

If you had asked me a month ago if I read manga, the answer would have been negative, and look at me now, fangirling about it. This world just sucked me in.

Shungiku Nakamura's stories seem to be right what I'm looking for in terms of genre(i. e. romantic comedy). I like Sekaiichi because it's about manga editors, and it's fascinating to learn more about the complex process behind these addictive products.

The characters are all easily likeable - you can't help falling for them or rooting for certain characters to get together. ^_^ Ritsu is very cute and his enthusiasm admirable. His back story with Masamune, well, wooo I didn't expect that (and it isn't very realistic that one would forget their first love), nevertheless, I must say the sex scene was really well-done. xD

I enjoyed this manga. Especially I liked flashbacks. I have read many yaoi mangas but a lot of them are rubbish. This is not one of them. I most likely will read second volume too.
There is also anime made of these series.

I waited to read this because I’m not crazy about the art ...but the story is really good. I used to work as a book editor and I like that they explain it exactly as it is. They don’t simplify the industry. Interesting read!
