I am a Native of New Zealand now resident in Australia, working in a large public hospital in Melbourne. For several years I studied and wrote screenplays, one of which was optioned by an academy award winning Screenwriter in the U.S. In 2003, I was introduced to an elderly gentleman "who might just have a story worth telling". The day I met Lale Sokolov changed my life, as our friendship grew and he embarked on a journey of self scrutiny, entrusting the inner most details of his life during the Holocaust. I originally wrote Lale's story as a screenplay - which ranked high in international competitions - before reshaping it into my debut novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is a powerful and moving book based on the true story of Lale Sokolov, a Jewish man who survived Auschwitz. Through his experiences as the camp’s tattooist, the book shows both the horror of the Holocaust and the small moments of kindness and love that helped people endure. The love story at its center is a reminder that hope can exist even in the darkest places.

I finished this book yesterday and then learned about the shooting in Australia on the first day of Hanukkah. It was heartbreaking and infuriating, and it made the message of this book feel even more urgent. It’s devastating that antisemitism is still so present in the world, and this story is a painful reminder of why remembering, and speaking out, matters.

4.5 stars. It was a really emotional read based on a true story. I like how it has an afterward that tells how the actual events occurred. The details of the concentration camps and the death tolls is gut wrenching. Mixed with the heartfelt love story of Gita and Lale during this terrible time in history.

I was drawn into the story and felt for the characters and was able to picture scenes. Lale was very brave to sneak the jewels and get food… and very gracious in sharing the food. I feel this is a good lesson for today.

Exceptional, harrowing, and at times difficult to read. I could not put this on down, knocked it out over a weekend 10/10 recommend.

Hard to believe what some people have to endure in a lifetime. Amazing strength and ability to withstand so much torture, both physically and emotionally.
