" Treasures of the Earth" is an indispensable resource for all those fascinated by agates, from amateur collectors to gemmologists. Agate collectors worldwide are drawn to its infinite variety of colourations and banding. This book captures that enthusiasm and reveals how and where agates form, together with a comprehensive identification guide. It is both an up-to-date reference source and an accessible introduction to the life of agates. It is beautifully illustrated with full colour photographs of superb mineral specimens from around the world.
The author thoroughly examines how agates form, including what can create all the various types of agate. Best of all, this is richly illustrated with probably 200 photos which are beautiful and informative.
This book is stunning. It is fairly technical. I believe it is written for the layman, but I found myself re-reading a lot as I read descriptions of the formations of agates. We got interested in agates this past August while in the upper peninsula of Michigan where the lucky rock hound will sometimes encounter a specimen of Lake Superior agate.
The first 1/3 of the book is dedicated to educating about agate formation, types of agates, colors and other properties. The last 2/3 of the book discusses locations around the world and the types of agates found there, lapidary of agates, uses of agates, and collecting agates. I love this book because it is all in color and it would be worth it to check it out just to look at the photographs. Awesome!
Didn't finish reading all the details of locations and processing the gems.
