Luckily, when her crew gets to be too much, Jayd can turn to her new crush Keenan, a UCLA first draft football pick, for a time out. Jayd's got to keep a cool head now more than ever because there's a new enemy waiting to pounce if she lets down her guard. . .

So So Hood As the book opens, Mickey is bitching about Mrs. Esop who somehow got her dad to cut off her allowance. Rah offers Nigel and Mickey his room. When Sandy comes “home” Mickey is tossing out all her ish. Jayd tells Rah the father of her baby is Trish’s brother (his supplier). Rah tho holds on to his initial offer to let Sandy sleep on the couch and says he’ll check with Trish to see if it’s true. This pisses off Jayd Rah tells Jayd in confidence that Sandy has a drug problem and he can’t just kick out his daughter’s mother. But Jayd says she put it on herself. Rah says he just wants to do the right thing, but Jayd says let her go. Rah then mans up and kicks Sandy out. It almost comes down to a fight between Mickey and Sandy. In the middle of this Jeremy calls and says he’s back. Jayd tells him she’s in the middle of something and puts his name in her contacts “Do Not Answer’.
On the day Mickey and Nigel move in, Chase stops by with Jere,y. Jayd gives him the cold shoulder and then shows him the picture. Jeremy says despite what she sees he’d never cheat on her. Chance suggest the photo might be photoshopped and he’ll look into it. Then they leave. Mickey gets a letter from her man who knows her baby is Trey’s. It’s Revelations 7:4 (a scripture about the whore of Babylon). He’s locked up for now, but that won’t last. Mickey says she’s not telling Nigel and Jayd can’t either. Then she asks for Jayd’s “help”. Mickey wants her man to go away forever. Jayd says she’ll see what she can do.
For the minute, Jayd is back staying with her grandparents. Her granddaddy offers her a job at the church teaching for ten dollars a hour. Temporarily Mama isn’t letting her work in the shop. The job is for 4 days. Later Jayd talks to Nigel who tells her Chance wants to talk to her. HE looked into the photo and Cameron admits (and he suspects) she set it up to look like it was more than it was. Jayd still isn’t ready to let this go. Nigel tells Jayd to cut the man some slack, but Jayd says she’s too real for that. She vows to make Cameron think twice before she tries tat again. Jayd talks to Mickey before ending the call about meeting at the mall. She plans to get the letter from Mickey and use Maman’s skill to tell its intent. Jayd finds out that her grandfather had ulterior motives and was trying to set her up with Wendall (a man that’s helping her teach the class that has foul breath).
Wile shopping with Nellie and Mickey, Jayd runs into Misty and notices she has fangs and glowing eyes. Her hair is even more luminous. Later at Mamas, Jayd reads about “The Golden Child” who can walk in and out of dreams and realities and has the power to see the unliving dead (shape shifters, vampires, were wolves). Nellie calls about Rah and Sandy fighting. Jayd blows her off. Jeremy calls about his birthday and celebrating with his friends. Then he reminds Jayd of when she kissed Rah at school and he feels about the necklace and the phone but he doesn’t let his jealousy dictate his trust in her. Jayd considers this and knows it’s true. He’s put up with a lot of her bs. So she agrees to go.
Jayd finds out what went down at Rahs from her girls. Lance came and got Sandy. Rah didn’t let them take Rahema. Then he called his attorney to finish was he started to get sole custody. At Jeremy’s beach party, there’s some conflict between Cameron and Jayd. Jayd sees in Cameron’s mind that Jeremy’s mother set it up because she had plans for Cameron and Jeremy to be together. Only Jeremy doesn’t seem to believe Jayd so she leaves. Jayd has a dream about a hooded figure (Legba). Jayd sees different roads and different hooded figures. Jayd pleads with him to get her out the mess she’s in. Mama tells her not to beg. Demand what she wants outright. So Jayd tells him to clear the road. The figures melt away. Jayd’s chooses are more clear. Me,a. Netta and Jayd do a ritual that’s for surrendering her ashe to all the Jayds before her and she receives a necklace.
The first day of school on Jayd’s senior year she finds out that if she can switch whatever potion Misty’s talking with one of her own she can control her powers. They all notice Misty’s new look (jet black hair cystal blue eyes tight black dress). There’s an issue at school with Jayd’s address that was possibly set up by Mrs. Benett. Also in this book, she’s no longer on the cheerleading squad because of her intiation which caused her to miss two practices.
One day while Jayd is over Rah’s for a session, Mrs. Esop shows up and slaps Jayd with a bill for the designer gown she bought her (it’s eleven thousand dollars). Mrs. Esop goes a step too far and also calls Mama crazy so Jayd places (I think) a curse (hex) on her. Jayd makes a decision to go to the administration and fight her dismissal from the squad. Even though she doesn’t even want to be on the squad. (Jayd’s absence wasn’t approved but Ellen’s was and she was gone for weeks to visit family in Texas). Jayd finds out from Mrs. Toni when meeting with her that Misty was the one who told the lady over the squad that Jayd “felt the need for a vacation” so she was immediately dismissed. Plus it was her way of getting on the squad (and her mother working in the office didn’t hurt). She suggests that Jayd get her story together if she wants to protest the decision but it’s probably best she concentrate on her schoolwork and she’ll write her a glowing letter. Her Mama will have to come to the school and her mother will also have to come to show proof of her original address. Mtd. Charmicheal throws her husband's ish all over the yard and finally ready to divorce him after she finds out he knocked up another woman. Jayd plans to help her with all the dirnking and smoking she’s been doing. Allia is happy because she got the man. Jayd is impressed she didn’t have to be mean to do it. Mama issues an ultimatum to Netta. It’s either her and Jayd or her sisters. Netta chooses her and Jayd.
At Nellie and Mickey’s birthday celebration, it comes out during a game of Truth or Date that Nigel found out about the letters Mickey and her ex are passing and that he’ll be out in dsays. On the way to Dr. Whitmore Esmerelda stages an attack through possed togs, but with the strength of her new poer Jayd is able to save herself, Rahema, and Nickey. Esmerelda has a new man Russel and Jayd finds o ut that Esmeralda’s new man Russell is a vampire that thirsts of the blood of Willima’s women. Mickey gets some a package of baby stuff from “her man”. She wants Jayd to cover, but Nigel finds out and goes OFF. He tells Nickey his mama was right about her and that he needs some space. Jayd tells Jeremy she needs some space. He was so drunk he couldn’t even give her an explanation and she’s not feeling that. Nigel says he’s going to stay with Chance temporarily.
Jayd finds out she won some money from the deunte girls for ten thousand dollars to give away to a needy girl. Only Mrs. Esop didn’t tell her. Jayd lets Keenan come home with her tio braid his hair and they end up kissing. Jayd’s mama walks in and doesn’t approve. She thinks Keenan is way over Jayd’s head. Jayd agrees to chill out. But Jayd can’t stop thinking about their kiss. Mrs. Esop pays Netta’s shop a visit and tells Mama she’s suing her Jayd has a dream that her grandmother is pregnant and needs to get to the hospital, but she and Netta are pursued by Russell who transforms into many different obstacles before they run him over (as a dog) in the middle of the street. Russo tries to intimidate Jayd She finds out that she’s turned Misty and Emilio into “her soldiers”. Again Jayd using her stare on Esmerelda with the help of her great-grandmother. Esmerelda sics her man’s dogs on Jayd but she’s able to get away. There’s a lady that always hangs around (Pam) that dies. Because she’s a crackhead and black the cops do nothing.
My Thoughts The first discussion question is do you believe in vampires? What fascinates you about these mythical creatures if anything? Not so much so like in the “Twilight” kind but I do people that there are people in this world that will drain you and suck the life out of you. So in a sense, I guess people can have vampire-like qualities. As for what fascinates me it's they’re seductive powers that can pull you in and hold you captive to whatever they desire.
Should Jayd give Jeremy another chance? Would you under the circumstances were the same? I do think Jayd should give Jeremy another chance. It was made clear to her that this was all a strick of Jeremy’s mother and ex. She said she wasn’t going to make it easy to get him but that’s exactly what she did by pulling the “space” card. Do you think Jeremy needs help with the drugs and drinking? Is Jayd overreacting? I mean personally, I’m not crazy that he smokes weed but it hasn’t seemed to affect the way he treats Jayd. Jayd DOES overreact A WHOLE LOT! She already knew what he did and it didn’t stop her from having a relationship with him. But now it’s a problem? I think she just needed a convient excuse to free herself up so she could talk to Keenan without the pressure of knowing she’d already with somebody. One bad thing I’m learning about Jayd is she likes to bounce from man to man. So, really she can’t say anything about Mickey and she REALLY can’t call Mickey selfish for accepting another man’s gifts. Did she forget she does this all the time with Rah and she’s suppose to be seeing Jeremy?
Do you know someone that’s been under the influence so strongly that you lose place and time? Actually its ironic. I don’t personally but my best friend told me he was hanging out with a group of guyd and the guy got into his feelings about some personal matters. Then he passed out. When he woke up he had no memories of even telling him any of it. But weirdly I asked if he’d been dirnking or smoking and he said NO.
Does it surprise you that Misty now had vampire like tendencies and that Esmeralda and trying to get Mama’s blood through Jayd? How do you see this story line playing out? YES! This twist was so out of left field. This story was relatively *real*. Now it’s turned into something else and I’m not so sure it’s a good fit. I’m honestly not sure where it’s going with this plot but what I think will happen is what always happens. There will be a “Care Bear Stare” down and because Jayd’s now a priestess she’ll probably break the hold on Misty and Emili. Possibly even Russell. She’ll probably have to kill Esmerelda eventually tho. Either that or find a way to strip her powers. Should Jayd stay in a committed relationship or explore her options? I think Jayd should stay where she’s at. Because she really doesn’t know anything about this guy. Why would you walk away from someone who treated you well and has PROVED it to be with someone that you don’t know what your getting into. You don’t know *what* this guy does at that college. Just because he’s fine and he reads books PLEASE!

Amazing book! I relate to this book in so many ways. Jayd is a very strong girl, who goes through many struggle because of her uniqness, but ends up overcomming them each time! I dislike Misty in this story. She needs to get beat up soon because she is getting on my nerves too. You should really read the book because it keeps you wanting to read more:)
OMG!! was Jeremy really cheating? All this drama and Jayd still had Keenen to talk to. Will this be a new love? I can't wait for the next installment. There wasn't nearly enough drama in this one but i hope there is in the next.
I was not fully satisfied with this book. I thought there could have been more interesting stuff happening to Jayd, but I feel there were so many loose ends with no sign of them being solved.
Divine, L. Drama High: So, So Hood. New York: Kensington Publishing Corp, 2011.
Characters: Jayd Jackson, 17 year old high school senior; Mama/Lynn Mae, Jayd’s grandmother; Netta, Mama’s hair salon co-owner; Jeremy, Jayd’s boyfriend; Rah, Nigel, Mickey, and Nellie, Jayd’s crew; Misty, Jayd’s “frenemy”; Esmeralda, Mama’s evil neighbor Setting: Compton, California Theme: teenage drama, African-American, friendships, dating relationships Genre: Hi-low, YA, multicultural Summary: As Jayd gets ready for her senior year at South Bay High, another chapter in her life opens up to the usual drama between her friends, frenemies, mean teachers, and evil neighbors. New developments involving her growing powers as a newly initiated voodoo priestess make juggling a boyfriend, making money, and keeping up with schoolwork almost unbearable. Her only option to get ready and face her troubles, following her ancestors’ motto to never back out from a fight. Target Audience: teenage females, Ages 14-18 Critical Response: Intended for the Hi-low reader, this new novel in the series, “Drama High”, involves all the typical high school drama that girls experience and includes an interesting mix of other social problems involving drugs, teen pregnancy, rivalries, and cultural heritage. The reading level is noticeably easy and the author uses a large amount of slang dialogue. The inclusion of a reading group guide with discussion questions and a “Start your own book club” guide complete with resources make this book and the series a great opportunity for reluctant readers to group together and get interested in continuous reading.
I love this series because I enjoyed reading this book. This author did a really good and excellent job to put out this book because it's always on point and it's funny series. In the beginning of this book, it was slow and steady at the same time but I like it. I do not believe in voodoo priestess or vampire but if I have a supernatural power then I would help people with their issues and my issue. Mickey should tell the truth to Nigel about the letter and her ex-man but she didn't. I think that Jayd should give Jeremy another chances because he was wrong for allows Cameron kisses him on their lip. He should tell Cameron that he has a girlfriend and he doesn't want to lose Jayd because he loves her but he didn't. I don't like Misty, Nigel's mom, Misty's godmother, and Cameron at all. I felt bad what's happen to Pam because she doesn't deserve to die. So far, I enjoyed reading this book because it's well written and well characters. This book and this author deserved five stars. I'm looking forward to read Street Soldiers vol 15 later on today.
Besides the bluford high series the drama high series Is another one of my faves. Jayd dealt with alot (like always). For her age She's mature besides the voodoo stuff and kissing boys (LOL). She would be a good young woman to look up to. -Misty ghetto fab butt needs to grow up. -Nellie should stop trying to be someone she's not or get kicked out the crew. -Rah lucky to have Jayd as a friend there situation complicated too. -Jeremy needs to grow up himself he cares about the Wrong things. Can Misty be killed off already along with her God mother they got too much time on their hands for this BS.

There a series of books before this one. These books are about this girl name Jay'd who is in high school that have some type of spiritual powers that was past down from generation to generation. All the women in her family possess some type of power. With these power there come with a price to pay not only spiritual but with relationship.I recommend that teens that like spiritual and drama fill books to read this. The one thing that I dislike about was the spiritual powers that she had.
I love this series. allways pulls you into the scene. i do believe the authors message is that people shouldnt judge the voodoo religion so quickly bt contridicts herself when jade does the exact same thing to baptists! did nt agree at all with the way she portrayed that. overall i liked it. just nt as good as the earlier books
I think that this was very amazing! I feel like the details & everything were nearly perfect. I also feel as if the characters role coulde been shortened just a bit. But overall the book is an huge example of how people can ruin your life by one little thing or one small decision can change your whole life forever.
I was expecting more drama between the main characters Jeremey and Jayd. But instead, most of it was about her new found religion and Esmerelda. It was an ok read, but some of the other Drama High books were better.
Always strong and determined, Jayd Jackson, along with the help of her ancestors, is back and fierce as ever! The relationship and friendship drama never ends, and ALWAYS has me coming back feigning for more! L. Divine has yet to disappoint!
I liked how she always has a way to sole something. Ask her grandmother for the answers to her problem. Tells her friends the right way to do things. And the little drama going on
