Emanuel James "Jim" Rohn was an American entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker. His rags to riches story played a large part in his work, which influenced others in the personal development industry.
Rohn was the recipient of the 1985 National Speakers Association CPAE Award for excellence in speaking.
Nearly every house valued over $200,000 has a library in it. Now why do you think that is?
Jim Rohn, motivational speaker and business genius, was almost a kinder, gentler Tony Robbins. Originally from Iowa, he uses common sense and a storytelling style in an effort to encourage listeners to improve their lives. This audiobook presentation is a mix of live presentations and studio-recorded bits. Personally, I think he was better in front of a live audience, but there was plenty to take away from in both sections.
Here's some of what he shares in this audiobook:
Read, learn, journal. Write down what works and what doesn't. Write down your goals and then take a minute to look at the passing days, weeks and months and see what you've accomplished.
Eat healthy and take that walk around the block. If you don't, you may seriously regret it, maybe not today or tomorrow but in the years to come, you'll wish you took a minute to invest in yourself.
Work hard at your job and you'll make a living. Work hard on yourself and you'll make a fortune!
Rohn insists that anyone can be exceptional. He says success in business (and life) comes from small positive steps taken consistently over time. That type of approach really works for most any goal or dream you may have.
Read contracts all the way through, every time. It seems like a simple thing, but it can take you down some dark roads if you don't read the fine print. He learned that the hard way.
Don't stop reading and be a lifetime learner. Stay curious. Stay involved.
And take pictures. Part of your legacy to the next generation can be the pictures and documentation you've made of your life.
I can't tell you how many times I've listened to this audiobook. It's one of my go-to programs when life has me down. Jim Rohn believed you can accomplish anything that you set your mind to do. He makes listeners believe that too. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to learn "the art of exceptional living."
I can only say that this was the book that has changed my thinking about my life. I actually had this book on CD, and because of me traveling with my job, i was able to listen to this book many times. One day, it made sense that i should be expanding my thinking, my knowledge, my understandings, and so here i am on this site, reviewing books, gathering the information on books, and adding to my future read list.
I was first introduced to Jim Rohn in college, and he’s such a fantastic motivator. According to success expert, Jim Rohn, “you don't have to do exceptional things at all. Just do ordinary things exceptionally well. That's The Art of Exceptional Living.” Short, basic information, but powerful ideas to ponder & implement. He reiterates to work on yourself continuously & do your best in every situation. I think about the famous quote by Howard Thurman, “Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” this book is essentially that, when you do your best and focus on continuous improvement & personal development, you can do bigger things and affect the world around you.
Loy Machedo's Educational Program Review - The Art of Exceptional Living by Jim Rohn
The Art of Exceptional Living is a 2 CD educational speech complied by Jim Rohn which has bits and pieces of his program which he delivered both from the recording studio as well as on stage in front of a live audience.
What surprised me was the intensity, the sincerity & the passion that came across from his delivery. The content was rich and the message truly thought provoking. In fact, I found it simply amazing to know that the advice given to the world by a Speaker, Trainer & Coach who was born in the 1930's still holds good - even today.
Consider the following pieces of advice. * The greatest value in life is not what you get, it's what you become. * Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job. * Formula for Failure: a few errors in judgment repeated every day. * A guy who has an empty bank account probably has high cholesterol. * Formula for Success: a few simple disciplines practiced every day. * Read, Read, Read -All Leaders are Readers * Anyone can go down to their local library and access the same wealth of knowledge that would enable them to change their life, but most people choose not to. * Did you know there are cassettes and books on how to be stronger, more decisive, a better speaker, a more effective reader, have a better effect on other people, become more loving, develop personality, get rich, develop influence, become sophisticated... and people don't use them?
May be that is why the legends of the Personal Development Industry like Tony Robbins, Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Brian Tracy and so many others give him credit to being their mentor, teacher and coach.
It is a very short, simple and sweet educational CD but without one of the must have collection for anyone.
Overall - A 10 out of 10 for this timeless treasure from a truly great man whom I consider the father of Personal Development.
Jim Rohn is my favourite mentor and teacher and, in my opinion, he's one of the best speakers and storytellers on the subject of personal development. I've listened to this audio so many times I can almost 'sign along' to it. Major lessons: Start a library, read the books, be responsible for your own education, set goals, become more valuable to the marketplace, small daily activities performed over a long period of time have huge results (an apple a day...). In a world where anyone, regardless of their credibility, can shout loud enough and get an audience, we need more people like Jim Rohn. It's almost like learning from your wise Grandfather - kind, straightforward, believes in you, can see your potential and wants you to be happy and do well.
One of my favourites that I’ll return to year on year. I’m either getting something new from it, or getting a reminder on something else. It never gets old, in fact, it continues to help me to grow.
The reason I love this book so much, is because it is almost like "The Best of Jim Rohn." If you ever have a chance to listen to the audio book series of the same name, it is actually a collection of several of Jim's seminars put together in a "sledge hammer" of self revelation & personal development.
I only rate books that have literally changed my life or moved my five stars, but then I have a wide range of 4 star rankings, anything 3 or below I probably wouldn't ever read again, but a 3 star review might not mean I hated it, but it doesn't mean I liked it either. Anyway, that is all besides the point...What I am trying to say is that this is book was on the high end of a 4 star book. Jim Rohn is very enjoyable with good insights. He presents a lot of what everyone else is presenting it, but in his Jim Rohn sort of way. This makes him unique enough to listen to, with additional original insights. This is a quick and easy listen with a lot of good information packed into one audiobook.
I've listened to other Jim Rohn programs the past couple months. This one and the others are quite repetitive; same core ideas, same overall stories. It would not be fair to say that if you've gone through one program, you've gone through the rest, but if you did not enjoy Jim Rohn in his other programs, it is unlikely you will enjoy him now in this one. I really loved his other programs and although I find the leaning on the same material unnecessary, listening repeatedly to the same principles helps them better get absorbed. Jim Rohn's narration is unique. It is his own personal way of saying things and engaging with his audience that makes his speeches and advice well worth the time.
I absolutely love Jim's work. What was funny to me is that I think that I have heard this whole thing in segments of YouTube videos that I have watched.
I don't want to just outline the material, but Jim's Philosophy and approach to personal development are very unique, simple, and most importantly, actionable.
If you have never really been into the "self-help" type of thing, but might want to try again, Jim Rohn is an excellent place to start. I wish I had found him sooner.
Jim Rohn is an excellent motivator who really helps you to understand its not the storms in life that truly matter but how you set your sail in that storm that counts!
He is really good at awakening the sleeping willpower to achieve and be better at living a fulfilling life. His anecdotes are to the point. He is an evergreen motivational speaker. And this book is a nice collection of his teachings on various topics.
I listened to this book several years ago whilst driving back and forth to work. This book can be a life changer for those who want to learn to think and act differently. For others who simply want someone to wave a magic wand over them and make life better it will not work, but then again, nothing else will either. I think that this book gets you thinking, far too many people have the idea that if only they had something else, a new car, a different house, lived in a different place, had another job and so on, that life would be better. This is often not the case because if they do get what they think they want they then want something else. This book teaches you to be an individual, change your thinking, change your life.
This really shines the light on our thinking and personal philosophy, and how our daily actions and habits either help us, or hurt us, in the long run. There is a lot of simple information that anyone can relate to, delivered in his unique style, that turns out to be rather profound in the effects on our lives. Such as, the "apple a day" analogy and our health, versus "a Hershey bar a day." Taking this to heart and applying this to my life, I have dropped 15 pounds in the past few weeks due to changing my daily eating and exercise habits. Listen and learn, it may turn around some of your thinking and help make the future much brighter!
This guys voice is one of the most distinctive I have heard in a while. However the message is great. Rohn centers on the theme of "work harder on yourself than on your job". Lots of daily affirmations to keep up with (apple a day, walk, healthy living = positive attitude).
The Art of Exceptional Living is one of those books where listening to the audiobook version makes it even better. Jim Rohn's lighthearted but firm attitude about how one can improve their perspective (the main point of the book) is refreshing. This is a book that I will definitely be returning to!
Interesting "self help" book, in that it was written so long ago you can see where all the other books get it from! :-) It said nothing more than think positively and be organised. And yet I still liked it, I must be getting old and sedate. I listened to the audio version.
Listened to on CD. Good starting points, slightly dated but a lot of valuable information. Probably an inspiration for Dave Ramsey. If you are a fan of his, this should be worth checking out.
"The Art of Exceptional Living" by Jim Rohn emphasizes that the true value in life lies not in what one acquires but in the personal development and growth achieved. Rohn encourages readers to focus on becoming the best version of themselves, emphasizing that success is a natural outcome of consistently practicing practical fundamentals. The author suggests adopting a mindset of gratitude, active listening, and continuous learning. Rohn argues against being a mere follower, urging individuals to be students who make decisions based on their own conclusions. The book introduces the concept that success is not the result of extraordinary actions but rather the outcome of disciplined daily practices. Rohn's formula for success involves cultivating beneficial disciplines and building a foundation of knowledge through reading.
Five significant takeaways from the book include:
1) Gratitude as a Foundation: Rohn's emphasis on gratitude goes beyond a mere acknowledgment of one's current possessions. He highlights the unique opportunities available, especially for those living in countries like the United States. Rohn's perspective prompts readers to recognize the abundance of resources, including education, inspiration, and freedom, fostering a mindset of contentment and positivity. By encouraging readers to be thankful for their existing circumstances, Rohn lays the groundwork for a more fulfilled and appreciative life
2) Active Listening and Continuous Learning: Rohn delves into the challenges of active listening, acknowledging that not all conversations are inherently engaging. However, he urges readers to see value in even seemingly uninteresting interactions, emphasizing that every encounter can offer a learning opportunity. The focus on integrity and character underscores the importance of showing respect to those who share their knowledge. Rohn's advice encourages a mindset shift, viewing each conversation as a potential source of wisdom and personal growth.
3) Discipline as the Key to Success: Rohn's concept of discipline extends beyond the typical understanding of hard work. He frames discipline as a set of keys that unlock various doors, including those leading to wealth, happiness, and success. By presenting success as a natural outcome of consistent, practical fundamentals, Rohn demystifies the path to achievement. The emphasis on daily practices reinforces the idea that success is not a result of sporadic extraordinary efforts but rather the cumulative effect of sustained disciplined actions.
4) The Power of Reading and Building a Library: Rohn's advocacy for reading is detailed in his assertion that successful individuals are avid readers driven by curiosity. The idea that leaders are readers emphasizes the importance of intellectual curiosity in achieving success. Rohn goes further by suggesting the creation of a well-balanced library, categorizing books as mental food that nourishes the mind. This nuanced approach to reading as a tool for personal development provides readers with a strategic perspective on building a library tailored to their growth.
5) Overcoming Self-Imposed Limitations: Rohn's exploration of self-imposed limitations, such as procrastination, blame, and excuses, adds depth to the understanding of personal development hurdles. By addressing procrastination, he underscores the deceptive nature of delaying seemingly unimportant tasks, revealing their cumulative impact. Rohn's examination of blame as a natural tendency driven by the ego adds a psychological dimension, urging readers to take responsibility. The emphasis on eliminating excuses aligns with the overarching theme of taking proactive steps today to shape a different and more fulfilling future. This introspective approach challenges readers to assess their daily choices and actively participate in their personal development journey.
I listened to an audiobook "best of" by Jim Rohn. There is nothing wrong with what he says - but a) it's really the pre-scientific age of the motivation speaker b) many times the "so how do you do practically change this way" was way too shallow c) I took barely a single note - i.e. not much new. I DO however give him the thumbs up for a very clear focus on plain vanilla "effort" - i.e. no you are not great just coz you exist and no you are not entitled to anything really and no you are not amazing sitting on your couch all day - this is refreshing as nowadays the narrative is often quite devoid of any work/effort paradigm (as it is obviously a much nicer message than to get off your butt)
