Marnie White was a quiet and highly educated woman. She had given up her life as a bank teller for her best friend who was having some troubles on her ranch. But after her best friend got married and the trouble subsided, she was feeling like a third wheel. Marnie figured it was time she set off into the world on her own, before the secret she kept close to her heart came back to kill her. After answering a newspaper advertisement for a cow camp cook on the Montana border she was off.
Tucker Jenkins trained colts and chased cows for a living on the Rafter R ranch and has for most his life. He had been told he had a way with horses. After a nasty fall from a horse almost killed him, his boss told him to take it easy for a couple months and put him in charge of hiring a new cook. He hired the first person who sent in an application but he hadn’t expected a wisp of a woman barely five feet tall who talked so softly he could barely hear her. Not to mention the fact that every time he said something she jumped from him.
They soon found out that food is more than just a way to a man’s stomach it is also a way to his heart and a colt is not the only thing that can be tamed.

I am living proof of that.
I was born and raised on the border in a small town named Danville, WA. My Dad was the hardest working man I have ever met. I have to thank him for my work ethic and drive to be who I am.
When I was twenty-five I was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. I had a young baby at the time and the reality of me not being there when she took her first steps scared me.
That is when I started to write.
First, it was just letters to her so that she could have something later in life from her mother to read. Then it became all my stories and then my first novel.
Now I have thirty-three different scripts in differant forms of being complete and one book being made into a movie.
I have one book of the year award won and six more that I am up for this fall.
I have another book that will be released this fall as well as my first CD.
I look forward to meeting you all somewhere along this trail I have chosen to travel!!!!!

I enjoyed this book! It was very fast-paced, the author left very little time to get bored. It was a very quick read for me.
The only reason I gave it four stars and not five is, there are some punctuation errors within the book.
I enjoyed the story and I enjoyed the complexity of the characters.

Dawn Nelson definitely kept the reader's interest with all of the twists and turns in this novel...I was unable to put it down until it was finished... I truly appreciate the complimentary copy from Goodreads First Reads... I am looking forward to reading more of her books...

Couldn't believe it when I won this book. Why would I have chosen it? Well, I am so glad I did. It was a very fun and charming book. I am looking forward to the next one out .

This book is being reviewed as a part of the FirstReads Giveaway program; I was not compensated for this review with the exception of the book.
Normally, I am not a great fan of Westerns. This holds true for "The Colt". It is part of The Rancher Series, which I did not realize when I requested the book; however there was little confusion and could have been a stand-alone book.
With overtones of "The Horse Whisperer", we meet Tucker, who has been injured from trying to gentle a colt. He may never ride again. A new cook arrives at the ranch, soft-spoken Marnie. Without giving away any of the plot, there are really not many surprises or intrigue to be found within its pages.
When I approach a book, I truly want to like it. The characters within, though a bit 2 dimensional, are for the most good people. The story was not bad either--remove the sexual references and it would make a fine book for just about any age.
However, the editing was non-existent. Punctuation, especially commas, were sorely needed throughout. Contractions would have made the speech far more believeable (especially that of a cowboy's language). Scenes would jump quickly from one to the next with no break. With a top notch editor, and perhaps fleshing out some scenes, this book would easily go up a star or two.
It's easy enough to be a reviewer than a writer. I hope the author takes my suggestions in the way they were intended, and her future works are successful.

I think this is the same book I have, even though the cover is different. This is a good book with a very complex hero and heroine. I enjoyed the build up to and was not let down at all in this book.
I met the author in Vegas at the Roper Cowboy Marketplace and bought one book from her, after reading that book I ended up coming back and buying them all.
Out of all of her books, this book is the one I felt was a little mild for her.
