Heiner Müller was a German (formerly East German) dramatist, poet, writer, essayist and theatre director. Described as "the theatre's greatest living poet" since Samuel Beckett, Müller is often considered the most important German dramatist of the 20th century after Bertolt Brecht. His "enigmatic, fragmentary pieces" are a significant contribution to postmodern drama and postdramatic theatre.
WOW! “History is the work of barbarians “ says Walter Benjamin.
This play of 9 pages, packed with allusions to mythology and literary works; symbols and images , criticizing history ,the present, fascism ( both capitalist and communist)as well as the European intellectuals, is saying the same.
Someone said’20th century has been a time of tragedies, and yet people are not writing tragedies anymore’. Well , Heiner Muller remedied that with a revolutionary post modern , post dramatic style which concurs with the content.
What would Hamlet do if he lived in the 20th century or now ? This is Müller’s answer. However, be warned,it is not easy to swallow.
