Making Kitchen Medicines, A Practical Guide

Rate this book
The wise healer should never be at a loss when it comes to helping themselves, their friends and family, or even a pet. Sometimes the simplest remedy will do wonders - for example, taking a hot bath will often ease the symptoms of a cold, especially if a little salt (about a cup) is added to the water.

In the past all people were taught basic herbal remedies so they could doctor themselves and their friends. By using natural remedies you will be helping to preserve an ancient art.

Filled with beautiful photographs, in this book you will find an assortment of natural remedies using easily available ingredients from the kitchen shelf. After you have mastered the use of these “home remedies” you may wish to progress to further study using medicinal plants from nature or from a local health food store (suggestions for further reading are given at the end of the book).

Reveiws of Making Kitchen Medicines:

“In this booklet, herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman shares a pantry full of kitchen magicks. Within these pages you'll discover how common foods and herbs from your own kitchen can be used to treat stomach upsets, ease joint pain, build up anemic blood, soothe a fever, and manage a number of everyday maladies. Hopman explains each use carefully and seasons her descriptions with sprinkles of timeless wisdom. Her work is a pleasure to read and will leave you anxious to scurry off to your own kitchen and start cooking!”

Susan Pesznecker, MA. teaches nature studies, herbalism, college writing, and literature. She is the author of Crafting Magick with Pen and Ink (Llewellyn, 2009).

“It was Hippocrates who said, ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food,’ but it is Ellen Evert Hopman who brings this idea home in a very practical way in this work. Here she provides us with a comprehensive guide to simple, time tested remedies that are already sitting in our kitchen cupboards, waiting to be utilized. The value of this little book transcends its size in that it provides a treasure trove of non-pharmaceutical and inexpensive alternatives to standard medical therapeutics in a focused and direct manner that makes it simple to use. A wonderful effort by a well regarded author in the field of Herbal Medicine.”

Kenneth Proefrock NMD, Naturopathic Physician
