About the author

Guido Cavalcanti (c. 1255 – August 1300) was an Italian poet who was a role model for and a very close friend of Dante. His poetry explores the philosophy of love. In June 1300, when the Florentines had become tired of brawling between the Ghibellines and the Guelphs, the leaders of both factions were exiled and Cavalcanti was amongst them. He was sent to Sarzana, where, after only a few months he decided to try to return to Florence. He died of fever in August of the same year on his journey home.

I enjoyed the historical information at the end: biographical facts, a description of the school of poetry Cavalcanti belonged to, the formal poetry blueprints he used, psycholigical insights into his two primary translators into English before this edition. Pound included a translation of one of these poems as a canto, and Cavalcanti stars in a very good story by Boccaccio. If you look to poetry for sustenance beyond the academic...look elsewhere.

Aunque se sabe poco o nada de la vida del autor, su poesía fue una de las grandes innovadoras en Italia y Europa durante finales del siglo XIII. Además fue el que determinó la lírica estilnovista, usada posteriormente por Dante Alighieri. En esta obra se reúnen todas sus piezas poéticas, incluyendo aquellas obras atribuidas.

Esta edición de Cátedra es una edición crítica y bilingüe. Comienza con una extensa y muy completa introducción de casi 200 páginas. Aquí conoceremos los pocos datos que se saben de la vida del autor y, más concretamente, un análisis de su poesía (una parte muy interesante, pues de ahí se sabe su posición ideológica también). Además, se pone en relación con la cultura occidental, su influencia en Petrarca, Lorenzo de Medici, Pound, etc.

Después de la introducción viene la poesía completa, un total de 52 firmados y seis atribuidos. Cada poema tiene una misma estructura. Tenemos un comentario inicial explicando de lo que trata el poema y otros comentarios de interés. Le sigue unas notas sobre la métrica y una bibliografía. Posteriormente está el poema en italiano antiguo, su traducción al español y unas notas comentando algunos versos en concreto. Una edición muy completa que ayuda muchísimo a entender y disfrutar de este magnífico poeta y de su extraordinaria obra.

Como hablante de la lengua italiana que soy, me ha parecido también sumamente curioso los poemas originales, pues nunca había leído italiano antiguo, y me ha parecido maravilloso, además de aprender mucho con las notas del editor. Sobre los poemas, estos son muy intensos, con muchos sentimientos, muy fáciles de leer y de entender. Sí es cierto que en español la rima se pierde, pero en italiano tiene una melodía y una musicalidad preciosa. Los temas que trata son muy variados, aunque giran mucho en torno al amor, incluso al amor dramático, al igual que la estructura en forma de sonetos.

This book is reputed to be brilliant. Perhaps it is in the Italian found on the left pages, but few of the poems do much for me in translation. I can see the traditions Cavalcanti helped invent, and that is a benefit. It is a nother perspeceive on Danta La Viat, and that is nice. I'd hoped for more.

The poetry is pleasing, but he doesn't change theme very often. It got a bit boring towards the end.
