I've been writing for a long time-- comics, games (like Destiny 2), books-- there's always *something.* But lately I've gotten into modern-day YA novels with the Alex Van Helsing series and now middle grade with the new Young Captain Nemo series.

Overall this was good. The Daughters of the Shadow series was good, but did seem to have some retconning, which I've never been a fan of. The Bullseye one shot was a little silly. The Elektra story did at least shed some light on her involvement in Shadowland. The Ghost Rider story was cool, but was basically just one big fight, and a major one at that. Ghost Rider's involvement in Shadowland seemed forced anyway, and this issue was sort of nuts. Finally, the Spiderman issue was pretty cool, but seemed also a little forced. Still, this volume was a decent read overall.

Bullseye story: utter crap. Elektra: superfluous and unimaginative. Ghost Rider story was good but still didn't make any difference to my enjoyment of Shadowland - unimportant filler. Spider-man and Shang-Chi had great art - first-rate action - but like all one-shots, the conflict wraps up too neatly and quickly to have any lasting impact.

Daughters of the Shadow: starts out almost gritty, then descends into maudlin silly emotive backtracking, and leads into an interesting premise (The Nail). The story follows a pretty predictable arc, hits a couple more amateur-hour emotional discussions, and ends more neatly than this dark Shadowland should allow.

All in all, not worth the money and hardly worth the time.

Marvel did an interesting thing with these crossovers. They tried to make them Shadowland stories that were more than just crossovers, they were also critical milestones in these characters lives.

Elektra. A nice short on Matt & Elektra's relationship and history and her appearance in Shadowland [4/5].

Bullseye. Who mourns Bullseye? This is a fun little story on the topic. [4/5]

Ghost Rider. In contrast to the Shadowland: Moon Knight comic, this one nicely leverages the Shadowland event to create a major event in Johnny Blaze's life. Though it's a brief little comic, it's meaningful in both its aspects, and has gorgeous art [4/5].

Spider-Man. Really, Spider-Man and Shang Chi. This is a nice comic because it brings Mr. Negative into the Shadowland mix, but it's otherwise relatively shallow [3/5].

Daughters of the Shadow (1-3). It's nice to get additional background and focus on Colleen. Here, we see her searching after her mother and looking into her history. The Shadowland connections are pretty light, but there. Unfortunately, throughout a lot of the story, she's just being pushed from plot point to plot point, and that's all a bit dull. A good ending thought, and a good new beginning for Colleen [3/5].

Shadowland: Street Heroes is a collection of Shadowland tie-ins that includes several one-shots (featuring Bullseye, Elektra, Ghost Rider, and Spider-Man) and a three issue miniseries featuring Colleen Wing. All of the entries' writing and art are solid and do a good job of representing the characters they feature. The Bullseye one-shot is the weakest, as the titular character (spoilers!) has died, and the issue features a convoluted aftermath that includes a sham funeral and an escaped murderous schizophrenic who imagines he hears Bullseye speaking to him. The standout is Daughters of the Shadow, where Daredevil promises Colleen Wing information about her mother if she leads the female warrior squad of the Hand, called the Nail. Enjoyment of Shadowland isn't necessarily enhanced by virtue of reading this collection, but they're worth reading nonetheless.

This collection of stories surrounding the SHADOWLAND story of Daredevil's fall into darkness were oddly wonderful. Bullseye, Daughter of the Shadow, Ghost Rider, and Spiderman with Shang Chi were all different and kind of off beat.

The stories were peripheral around Daredevil and his Shadowland dominion of Hell's Kitchen and yet, they were extremely personal and small stories all around.

Good stories.

Stories range from awful to mediocre. But all are completely inessential. There's some nice art in there, especially for the Ghost Rider tale. (But seriously, WTF is he even doing in Shadowland, he serves absolutely no purpose even in the main events)

Shadowland Street Heroes

The Ghost Rider issue collected here is great but the rest of set is insipid and doesn’t flesh out the Shadowland storyline enough to be worthy of anyone’s time.

This is the "odds and ends" collection of the Shadowland crossover. It collects 4 special one shots that tied into the event and a three-issue miniseries.

Bullseye: Dead on a Rival (John Layman & Sean Chen) is completely stupid, just a shining axample of a bad comic. Nothing to see here. *

Shadowland: Elektra (Zeb Wells & Emma Rios) was an interesting experiment. In the middle of a bloody battle, Elektra constantly "zones out" to receive spiritual messageas from Master Izo, I loved the art in this one as well as the trippy concept. ****

Shadowland: Ghost Rider (Rob Williams & Clayton Crain.) I'm not a Ghost Rider fan, but I actually enjoyed this yarn, about a wild card stuck in the middle of a conflict on which he takes no side, and yet is being manipulated against his will by EVERYONE. I actually felt like I grew closer to the character and learned a few things about him, and he's portrayed a bit like Jessie Custer here. Interesting art in this one. Cool. ***1/2

Shadowland: Sisters of the Shadow 1-3 (Jason Henderson & Ivan Rodriguez) is about a samurai-themed heroine named Colleen Wing, whom I've honestly never heard of before. The first chapter has a theme of temptation versus conviction that was really well done, but it goes downhill after that. Truthfully, the collection, Shadowland: Blood on the Streets is a disposable installment, but it's casually tied to this one if you care about that. ***

Spider-Man: Imbalanced (Dan Slott & Paulo Siqueira) appears to be a chapter in a longer story that we don't see anything else on and is only marginally tied to Shadowland. I felt lost, and frankly it isn't very good anyway. **

Back when Marvel laid preparation for their big events a long time in advance, rather than just having them show up out of nowhere on a schedule dictated by the marketing department*, Shadowland was one of the most exciting prospects. Daredevil had long been a character who walked a very thin line; since Frank Miller first made him more than an also-ran, there'd been a darkness at his heels. And here, finally, was a story where he flipped altogether; I still remember the opening issue, where he finally lost patience with the murderous maniac Bullseye, did the right thing, and ended the prick. A proper air-punching moment of triumph.
Except then it turned out that rather than being meaningful character development, it was a demon wot dun it. And soon the possessed Daredevil had resurrected Bullseye as his undead ninja minion (because what could possibly go wrong with that plan?) and the whole thing crumbled to shit.
This tie-in collection features an assortment of one-shots and a miniseries, mostly the work of fairly impressive talent. And the general rule is that however dire the crossover, you can generally find something interesting at the margins, where the writers have more freedom to do something off their own initiative which makes marginal use of the premise. Alas, the results here range only from the idiotic to the merely superfluous; the highlight is a wake for Bullseye, written by Chew's John Layman and featuring traces of that series' mordant humour.

*Yes, I know Axis was foreshadowed in Uncanny Avengers, but since that book a) normally seems to exist in its own little bubble and b) is bloody awful, it doesn't count.

There were a couple cool stories in here, the Ghost Rider and Bullseye stories for instance. But, not having read the main Shadowland story in Daredevil it seemed kind of random with only a little backstory for me to follow. This came out during a time I wasn't getting comics so if I had read the Shadowland story itself it would have been a little more enjoyable.
