Mary Elwyn Patchett (1897 - 1989) was an Australian author who lived most of her life in Britain.
She grew up on a cattle station in Texas, Queensland.
After working as a journalist in Australia, she lived and worked in England from 1931. Although she only returned to Australia for holidays, it is there that her books are set.
I read an old version copyright 1953. The Australian bush back between the world wars was an isolated place for a young girl to grow up in. Mary rarely saw others her own age. Instead her companions were were pony, horse, variety of pets and her three dogs. Together they got into and out of many adventures. Benny was the smallest dog. He loved attention and was friendly with everyone. Algy was a bulldog, a breed almost unknown in Australia at that time. He was brave and daring and fiercely loyal to Mary. Ajax was found in a hollow log half drowned after a flood. He was half dingo, had little use for people. Yet he was devoted to Mary. His large size and golden color were her constant companions. If Mary got into a jam, he was there to rescue her even if it meant fighting to the death. This is a delightful book to read. It is primarily about Mary and her dogs as they go through adventure after adventure around her father's station in the Australian bush where he raises cattle. Each episode is a story in itself. Some are great fun. Others are potentially lethal. All have the backdrop of wild Australia. All are told in a breezy manner fun and fast to read.
"Ajax- there isn't anything in the world that Ajax wants and I can give him that he can't have.... The nice thing about Ajax is that he has what he wants and is prepared to die to keep it. " Probably my favourite quote from the book which is already one of my favourite books of all time.
