Hutton & Co. #3

Lord of the Desert

Rate this book
Sheltered, small-town girl Gretchen Brannon was out of her element when she aligned herself with Sheikh Philippe Sabon. They came from two different worlds, yet she found a soul mate in the powerful, sensual man who'd suppressed his passions for far too long —and harbored a secret anguish. Nevertheless, he made Gretchen aware of her courage...and in turn, she aroused his sleeping senses as no other woman could. But now that Gretchen's heart belonged to the Lord of the Desert, danger loomed when she became the target of the sheikh's most diabolical enemy.

This one wasn't too bad. It was a pretty good story. Of course there are some trademark DP touches - but they are fairly light in this one.

H thought he was impotent for nine years, the result of a landmine explosion. h makes him feel for the first time. his longtime love for an OW makes him a little bitter - she married another man and had a child. H/h marry to give H cover for his impotency. H/h only married a short while when they arrive home to find OW - H basically drops h like a hot coal to spend all of his time with OW and her son. OW loves him like a dear friend. Danger and bad guys enter the picture and the h represents herself well. Of course, there is a HEA.

Turning a trope on its ear, rather than a magic P overwhelming virgins galore, we have a magic vagina the creates miracles.

The H and h meet kind of cute. She doesn't know he is her new boss. That's okay as he has plans that extend the initial PA job description. He wants her to pretend to be his new hot piece. She agrees to it then falls in love and then falls into a pretend marriage that I don't understand because I was skimming a little.

The h is pretty much one of the Mary Sue-est of Mary Sues, but she can wield a pistol, can cuss in English, Spanish and whatever language her new sheikh FIL speaks, and is prepared to kick, literally, the sense into anyone that even thinks to diss her. They marry and wowza.

Ms. Palmer. Really? I had such high hopes for this hero. He didn't inner monologue, slut-shame, belittle the h, run off with another woman, assume the h is money-grabbing immoral vixen. For a sheikh, Phillipe was pretty user friendly. At least until they got married and had sex wherein he reverts to DP hero type. He is cold, distant and starts to hang out with the doppelganger. The H, her spine and Elvis lookalike guard leave for Texas, yeehaw.

This book had one of my major pet peeves inconsistency in a series. In the previous book Once in Paris Philippe Sabon was introduced and he was a Muslim complete with praises to Allah and his country was referred to as a simple Muslim country. Now in this book he has somehow changed from Muslim to Christian and his country in now a country of mainly mixed religion. Now I don't care what religion he is but I hate inconsistency. Was the author unable to write a story with the hero a Muslim? and had to change it I don't know, but the whole thing grated after I enjoyed the previous book and was looking forward to this one.

The Author also went back to her trope that she does in some of her books of heroine smugly announcing how old fashioned she is throwing in her overly religious parents as an excuse while roundly denouncing modern society Blah!!

Ugh, so much to hate about this book, most notably the OW, who was clearly top choice no matter what the H said at the end. Also, the OW is an h in another Palmer book and she didn't seem to have one ounce of compassion or concern for the h, even though the H was treating her very rudely and dismissively. She barely acknowledged her, or found the H's behavior funny. I hope Palmer made the OW suffer when she was the h in the other book, because she really deserves it.

Also, all of this adventure/mercenary stuff is nonsense. I hate the way new male characters are introduced as being good-looking alphas and it becomes painfully obvious that these new men will be H's in later books. She doesn't seem to realize that if you've met one hot alpha mercenary, you've met them all. There are only superficial differences, and that makes it very tedious.

first i give this book five stars, but today i don't know just want to be re-read some books i like before and damn its one of the books i feel tooo good to give five stars so i just wanna fix that 3 STARS for the bad Philippe.

Lord of Desert with the weakness in his vital part.
I know him from once in paris and he like Brianne but if i'm not wrong Philippe in there no too clear about his feeling to her, so i'm little bit surprise and hate how deep his feel to Brianne in here.

i like so much with DP, even she has some bad arrogant jerk heroes who like to humiliate, insult and treat their women (heroine) so bad.
Not different with Philippe, its good book when you start to read but the last pages it so annoying.

He meet with Gretchen, typical DP heroine virgin naive and beautiful of course.
Soooo she attracted to him with good looking, rich, bla bla bla and ooooohhh so charming but she doesn't know that Philippe see her because Gretchen remind him about Brianne.

shit, suck right to be second best????

i don't get it why??? when Philipe after all time he spend time with Gretchen not realized his feel, or its because stubborn man code not want to admit his feel to her. So many proof for Phillipe taht Gretchen is the right woman for you.

But NOOOOOO, he still obssesed with Brianne, the dream girl for the big boy!!!!

I hate so much Phillipe when Brianne and her son come to palace, he avoid Gretchen never spend time with her again, live with his fantasy world where he, Brianne and her son is his family even reject that Gretchen is his wife, he said Gretchen is his secretary PLEAAAASEEEEE....

Phillipe is adult MAN not a boy or young man who can't see the difference how you behaviour can hurt other people, in here Gretchen.

"What did he think he could have with Brianne Hutton now, except friendship? She loved her husband. She grieved like a
widow since her arrival, after their estrangement."

OMG Phillipe you have no shame, you still have empty hope!!!!

"Gretchen was going to leave him. He would be left with nothing,
because that was all he could expect with Brianne Hutton.
He still adored Brianne, but she was married and so was he. If there had ever been a chance for them, it was far too late now. All she talked about was Pierce and how miserable she was since they'd
parted in anger."

Soooo if Brianne give you chance or if she not talking about her husband all time, what then??? you just left Gretchen like that for her??
He's like stupid man, so how if Brianne unmarried, he just divorce Gretchen and choose Brianne, something like that????
He must think Gretchen first,so whatever Brianne single or not, you married to Gretchen, remember that!!

its just like he choose Gretchen for second best because Brianne doesn't want him. :(

damn, and Philipe just say he still adore Brianne, nobody want her man adore another woman ever!!!

I just want Hero said if anybody from his past come back and want to together again he with strong belief mind and said no because no matter what i love this woman and can't leave her for anything in the world.

"She could not arouse me. Not that she knew I was even thinking of such a thing," he confessed.
"But my body was dead when Brianne was near me. Of course, it did not help that she missed her husband and spoke of him relentlessly the
whole time," he chuckled. "Or that I could think of nothing but you, and my unspeakably terrible treatment of you, especially after you left me."

Why must he say like that, just say he can't aroused not add the reason why he can't it's like because Brianne spoke of her husband the whole time that make he can't aroused.

So when he said this :
"Brianne is my friend, Gretchen. She was never more. She never could be."

i still curious, "she never could be" its because she doesn't want phillipe or because situation both of them married, or because whatever Brianne free or not she never could be more because Phillipe still choose Gretchen.

I WANT GROVEL, but in this book nothing, and Gretchen soooo easy forgive him, makes you feel not satisfied!!
AMEEENNN.. enjoy read :)

I hate it VERY much
As a muslim arab I felt a fended. The author said wrong ideas about muslim/arab women. For god sake do some research before writing a book about arab.
I couldn't finish it.
And the haram thing!!!!
For gad sake there is no haram since before my grandmother born or even more!!! Can you imagine the sheikh of Dubai has a haram.
And the christian sheikh oh yeah really!!! Sheikh title go only for Muslim.. gold this author really needs to do A LOT of research.
The the thing about arab/Muslims women who are not independent!!!! And have no power -_- the wonen who are in power in Iraq for example more than the women in power in USA itself.
I hate every single minute of this novel....

This was really fun!
The hero is a charming sheikh who was severely wounded and maimed years some year ago.
He has been completely impotent for 9 years (yep!). Not even a twitch down there.
When he meets the heroine suddenly something happens.
He feels something special for the heroine, a naive young woman who should work for him.
Her work should be: PA with benefit. But her benefits are of course limited since he cannot function at all.
So they will have petting instead.
Why?
Because there are rumors that he's incapable to procreate and his rivals plan to take the lead.
So they will pretend to be lovers.
He ouf course, after 10 years of complete death of the flesh, thinks he won't feel anything as usual.
Then suddenly...
Miracle! Resurrection!
There's life on Mars!
His lil boy is alive and kicking!
Immediately, and too stunned and happy even to hope that he could function as a man again, he starts having heavy petting with her and his lil one is very much alive, so he thinks that the best thing to do is marry this miracle lady.
The most exhilarating scene is when he watches himself in the mirror and, only thinking of the heroine, he has a hard-on! It's something you don't want to lose, because, hey, it's Diana Palmer writing, and she obviously doesn't use such words as c**k, d**k or hard-on.
In her usual language it was almost a mystical experience!
So they get married and they have much and hot sex that is unusual to find in DP books.
Brief drama with a group of terrorists, where the heroine behaves like Rambo and threatens the villain.
Enter the ow.
Yes.
Because the hero has been in love years ago, with another woman who married another man, and he let her go because he couldn't perform any more.
He describes her to the heroine as the love of his life, that is not cute at all, but we readers, that are smarter than him, already know that he was never really in love with her, and the irrefutable proof is there, between his legs, shouting, hey, you, dumbass, it's the heroine we love, not the ow!!!
The hero though is very thick and when the ow comes to his palace to avoid a criminal who wants to kill her, he brutally neglects the heroine and keeps going around with ow without a second thought.
Of course when she packs and is ready to leaves him, he understands his idiocy and apologizes declaring his love.
And he's not even sterile!
She's just a miracle girl!
It's really the first time that we hoped a hero listened to what is under his belt, because in this case the lil one knew better!
What a cute and entertaining reading!
I recommend it because it's fun and safe, and unexpectedly sexy.

You'd think that after reading 50 or so Diana Palmers, I'd be used to her awesome - well- versed formula..
Apparently not! This book had all the classic elements..
Hairy sheikh (not a cowboy this time) with a tortured past
A virgin but plain looking heroine who is strong yet innocent
And some glitches before their deserved HEA. He does f up in a traditional way too- but what surprised me was the accurate Arab descriptions, the humor and the amount of sex in it!
Totally loved it(even with the minor OW, again classic scenes)
Safe-ish read

Excruciatingly boring. Condescending history/political commentary on every other page. 😵‍💫🫠.

I like this author’s older books better, when she’s not trying to be something she’s not.

I had high hopes for this one, which might’ve been my problem….maybe I set my expectations too high. I’m a huge DP fan, and was so excited to see her take on a sheikh romance. In a nutshell, Gretchen Brannon (has ties to the L,TT series-so some crossover) and Sheikh Philippe Sabon meet while on vacation, and share an instant connection. Stuff happens and she agrees to a MOC.

Small town girl meets and falls in love with a handsome strong Sheikh who also happens to be impotent and still mourning over his lost love. He proposes a marriage of convenience and heroine accepts cause for once in her life she wants to be adventurous.

Hero has lots of scars and sweet naive heroine heals them all with her unconditional pure heart. I adored Gretchen! She is brave, courageous and has a heart of gold. Brooding hero was in denial for a while but he couldn't help falling in love with his adorable fearless brave queen!

Didn’t work out for me. DP was rather lose in her writing of this one. The potency of the relationship between the h and H was missing. Also my utter absolute Uber pet peeve: easy, needy h. Gretchen is barely 23, in a foreign African/Muslim/Jewish/Christian land (yeah DP tried but failed to make it sound neautral). Her friend who was supposed to be with her had to leave in an urgency and now Gretchen is by herself in a place where she can’t even read/ speak the language.

And yet: Gretchen is easy talking, probing, incessantly asking unpleasant questions of a seemingly wealthy stranger. Despite her qualms on being a prude and only to be sleeping with her husband, she was extremely available to hang out and chat with this stranger. She had absolute no reservations or bashfulness and I could not connect with her at all. The H was alright but if I were him, I’d run in the other direction from Gretchen and her questions and lack of humor. Fail.

s. 28,29
„...zaslechla jsem něco o šejkových perverzních sexuálních choutkách...“ (...)
„Senátor Holden prohlásil, že tyhle pomluvy rozvířil on sám, aby ochránil manželku Pierce Huttona před jejím nevlastním otcem.

On: Jde ti o život, nikomu nevěř a s nikým cizím nikam nechoď.

A pak hrdina získal skvělé vzdělání.

Můj otec by mi usekl obě ruce (...)

s. 145 „Možná jsi nic necítil jednoduše proto, žes to nikdy nezkusil.“

Vskutku?

Když kousáním a škrábáním vyléčila hrdinovu impotenci a neplodnost, jedno oko nezůstalo suché.

Plný palác agentů a žoldáků, kamer a detektorů a stejně tam vybuchne nálož? Nicméně už v tuto chvíli agenti věděli, kdo to byl, kam dal C-4 a stihli ho vyslechnout. A věřili mu.

[Leila a Gretchen]
„Ne. Tam by mě vůbec nikdo nehledal.“

Tedy jeho: It´s the last place anybody would search for him.
Pak pošle jediného svého bodyguarda pro druhého bodyguarda a tchána, zatímco ona a služka „připraví návnadu a dostanou ho do pasti“ (s. 332).

s. 242 abychom vás vykoupali a abychom vás hýčkali
Leila a další čtyři ženy.

s. 260 aby jezdil z Brianne

s. 306 cos jsi ode mě odjela domů

Gretchen Brannon is ready for a holiday. Four months before her mother passed away after a very lengthy and draining battle with cancer. So when Gretchen’s best friend Maggie announces that she’s taking a job in Qawi as personal assistant to the Sheikh and invites Gretchen to a week’s vacation, Gretchen jumps at the chance to travel. On the day they arrive, Maggie receives word that her foster-brother has been in a horrible accident and she’s needed at home. Maggie convinces Gretchen to stay on in Morocco, and then travel to Qawi assuming Maggie’s identity and take the job. On her first excursion as a tourist, Gretchen literally runs into Phillipe Sabon, a suave businessman who seems to know his way around. Phillipe hides his identity as the Sheikh of Qawi, and he escorts Gretchen to various tourist spots, and they begin a romance. Phillipe is enchanted with Gretchen, esp. after she confesses to him that her friend had suggested she deceive the Sheikh by taking her friends place. When she is so honest, Phillipe realizes he too must be honest and he confesses that he is the Sheikh and that the job entails his new assistant to pretend to be his lover. Phillipe further confesses that the severe injuries he sustained in a landmine blast have left him impotent and thus the need for the pretense, as the Sheikh must appear to be a virile man.

This was another abridged audio version. And I enjoyed it very much. The narrator did a spectacular job. Gretchen, though naïve is not afraid to explore her desires and once she realizes she loves Phillipe, she’s willing to give her life to protect him. Phillipe is much more than the suave businessman Gretchen bumped into. And as their romance advances, desires long dormant in both of them awaken, much to Phillipe’s astonishment. There are some over-the-top plot devices, however, this is fiction and a bit of fantasy is quite all right if used well, as in this case. Very nice chemistry between Phillipe and Gretchen. I was very pleased with their HEA

Here we go again....

1) Hero: Jerk of the year but he garnered my sympathy. He was more like her typical hero's not so obnoxious 3rd cousin

2) Read entire book: Yes just because there was a sweetness to the storyline and I kinda like the hero and heroine.

3) Intriguing: Yes -- dying to see if the guy would eventually turn into a big jerk

4) Do I still have the book or did I give it away to the goodwill: I have it but I can;t remember the last time I pulled it out. I get the ewe jeebees at the thought of throwing out one of her books -- even the one's I hate

5) Did she jump the shark on this one: Nope... although I found myself mystified that the characters were so different from the usual Diana Palmer hero. I kinda was disapointed that he was so ... so...non-assholist.

6) Recommend: Yes to anyone looking for a sweet love story

Reread. After reread a lot of DP's novels, I found whenever there were all the sweetness and tenderness at the beginning of a book, something bad would happen. And that's also the case of this book. h should let H do more to gain her forgiveness.

This book had sth new: H got injured several years ago so he couldn't bed a woman.

H was charming at first, but then he turned into a jerk after he married h, esp Felt deeply for h. Wished H grovel more because he didn't deserve forgiveness so soon considering the way he treated h. Who cared if he was a Sheikh or not?

3.5 stars for this audiobook version. I was not overly fond of this narrator, but she improved a bit as the book progressed. So four stars for the story and three for the audio rendition.

Arggghhh!!!
Beginning - Middle = boring.
It only got interesting after the Hero's former lover came into view.
Even then, the Hero was a total sorry ass of a man. I hated him.
He left his wife to be with his ex - showered her and her son with all his devoted attention; completely abandoning his wife for weeks on end.
When she tried to seduce him one day (as husbands and wives should ... note that he'd been ignoring his wife never coming to her bed for weeks now), he behaved abominably; treating her badly and telling her she's not his wife but only his secretary.
When she was about to pack to leave the country, he 'raped' her, but of course, the heroine was too soft to put him off. Only after the fact did she regret doing it, she thought he only used her when all he ever wanted was his beloved ex. So she sulked. The Hero, being as obtuse as he was, stormed off and 'divorced' her.
So the heroine returned to the U.S.
Only after finding out she was pregnant did he come and met her.
There was no groveling. He barged in to her office where she worked and she left in his limousine. They talked. It was like a one sentence and she fell all over him again. Forgave him for all he'd ever done.
This was a complete bogus pair of couple.
So mad.
I know D.P's Heroes were mostly a-hole, arrogant and proud but never this bad.
And the heroine, mostly were a bit on the 'no backbone' type but never this awful.
Man, oh man, what a disappointment.

Sabon and Pierce’s books were the best!!

I loved how Gretchen never shut up about her feelings and was so brave and honest. Plus what Sabon did to her with Brianne….my heart broke for her but she dealt with it like the queen of the desert that she is!!!

I was just a little disappointed that Sabon didn’t have to fight to much to win her back, after what happened I was expecting more but I still enjoyed.

Gretchen and Philippe. Entertaining romance in Old-School style.
Gretchen and her friend Maggie are travelling through the top of Africa, when Maggie must rush home to care for a dear friend. She talks Gretchen into taking her place at her new job for a young Sheikh. Gretchen has a chance meeting with an enigmatic man, Philip with whom she spends time and they pretty much fall in love... although of course, that won't be admitted to til much later. This first part of the story was sweet and humorous in an almost corny way. Philippe is not who he seems and Gretchen finds herself pulled into his world until she never wants to leave. But Philippe has ulterior motives and another woman, Brianne from his past that he can't seem to let go of, and who Gretchen happens to resemble... Yep, that's almost as bad as the hero saying another women's name in the heat of passion!. . The Hero isn't as much of an asshat as most of Diana Palmer's male leads. But by the end I was still bothered by some of his actions and felt that he didn't assure Gretchen nearly enough that she was the only woman he loved. This was also hampered by my introduction to Brianne who came across superficially sweet and very self absorbed. Philippe, Brianne and her husband Pierce have history from a previous book, 'Once in Paris' which I didn't read and really don't want to now. If a guy treated his wife that way around me, I'd no longer consider him a friend. I'd certainly have given him a piece of my mind! But she just smiles and is all happy for Philippe, like his jerk off actions mean nothing. It was down right galling!!! and left a bad taste in my mouth. If it weren't for that I'd have really enjoyed the whole book. The audio reader was good, but her German accent was atrocious! The ending where Gretchen saves the day was a hoot and if only Philippe had done a better job grovelling or Gretchen hadn't caved in so easily. I liked her, she's not really a doormat but when someone hurts your feelings and loses your trust, it would be impossible to forgive them so easily. But hey, like I said, this is old-school, turn the other cheek kinda love. I swear I am more annoyed with Brianne than I am with Philippe. I mean, where's the sisterhood??

I have a fondness for Sheik-Romance books. They're always a bit cheesy but totally up my alley.

I like the plot of this, predictable as it was and there was a happy ending which I'm always a fan of. I liked that it was a country in the middle east and it stuck to that, I find often these kind of books have become totally westernised and it doesn't read true.

I hadn't read the first two books though and there was lots of random mentioning of people from other stories - which I found weird as a few secondary characters weren't given names. Phillipe's Father and Uncle, for example are referred to as 'Phillipe's Uncle' and 'The Old Sheik'. Very odd.

The writing was a little bit off for me too - there was a bit of repeated information, or one character suddenly wouldn't know something which they should as it was mentioned before and there was exposition where it wasn't really needed and none when it was. I think it made it a bit jarring to read. As did the fact that it's an older book (I assume - haven't actually checked the publication date) - it feels very dated, from the fashions mentioned (or example; his very thin gold watch' made me think it was written in the 80s).

I also didn't particularly like Gretchen. I know she was really young and inexperienced but instead of sweetly naive, she came across as wilfully ignorant.

I was going to say I liked Philippe - but then I remembered how much of a dick he was to poor, doormat Gretchen and how he was all about Brianne, who was his 'world'. I also didn't believe his 180 later on and his declaration of 'we're just friends and that's all we've ever been'. Yeah, only because Briann'es married. I very much felt like Gretchen was his consolation prize and she seemed ok with that!? Bah.

I like this tale well enough but I'm not rushing out to read the rest of the series.

Série Hutton & C.O.03
Lorde do Deserto
Diana Palmer

ADORO!!!!!!!!!!!

Ms. Palmer was great on setting the scene and making me feel the middle eastern surroundings and traditions, but I think the dialog could have been worked on more considering the characters intelligence and educational backgrounds. It should have been shown more through their interactions then "told". I felt as if there was too much "author voice" and not enough "character voice". Also there should have been more building time in the relationship to invoke the extent of the love that we are led to believe exsist between these two. Maybe more intensity in the meeting would have helped to make the quickness of their getting togeteher all the more believable. It was all about his needs through most of the book, when it should have been more mutual or more in her favor for her to love so hard and so quickly. With that said it was an entertainng read.
