The Senator's Wife

Rate this book
New York Times bestseller Karen Robards reaches new heights with this sizzling new novel in which one woman finds unexpected love against the unforgiving backdrop of political life, where a private affair can quickly become a public matter.

Ronnie Honneker is the senator's wife--his second wife.  The Honorable Lewis Honneker, a man twice her age, is wealthy, successful, and revered by voters in his home state of Mississippi.  What the public doesn't know is that this pillar of the community is fond of engaging in casual indiscretions.  Now he's running for re-election and his young wife is expected to stand by him.  Though scorned as the woman who broke up the senator's first marriage, Ronnie does her best to promote her husband's re-election campaign.  But she never would have guessed that marriage to a wealthy man could be so lonely.  The glamour of political life can't make up for the emptiness deep in her heart, a dark space she fears will never be full.

Until political strategist Tom Quinlan enters the picture.

Solid, quietly handsome, the southern boy-next-door, Quinlan prides himself on his work, never mixing business with pleasure.  Called in to enhance the senator's campaign, he finds his biggest challenge in Ronnie as he struggles to make her appear less glamorous and more likable to the voting public.  To him, Ronnie is a job.  A routine assignment.  So why does he find himself unable to stop thinking about her?  Her fiery hair, her long, perfectly muscled legs, those inviting chocolate-brown eyes? Tom has never allowed himself to surrender to such feelings. . . until now.

Ronnie never expected to find love again, and certainly not with a man like Tom Quinlan.  But she can't fight the pull that Tom has on her as he awakens feelings in her body that she'd thought were gone forever.  And she knows the tempers that flare between them are only a cover for their barely contained passions.  Together they discover that love and politics are uneasy bedfellows as they contend with their burgeoning attraction to each other, a swarm of snooping reporters, and a public growing increasingly suspicious of their relationship.

When the senator mysteriously dies in the midst of a sticky scandal, Ronnie and Tom must answer to the growing rumors of their love, and clear themselves of any guilt in his death.  Realizing it would be easier to keep up appearances, they take the ultimate political gamble and risk everything for each other.  But as the stakes rise, they learn that they must watch their backs.

And follow their hearts.

"The woman was not what he had expected. The Senator's choice of a second wife had clearly been influenced by parts of his anatomy far removed from his brain".

The Senator's Wife by Karen Robards

I must admit this book fizzled with me. It combines some fun genres..politics, Legal, mystery. But I did not like it all that much.

Ronnie is a Senator's wife. Tom is brought in to work on her image. You see Ronnie is "to pretty". She needs to be made to look plainer, less flashy. And Tom is just the guy to change her public image.

I liked the idea of the book more then the book itself. I love mysteries and I love political reads, both fiction and non fiction. So I thought this would be a winner for me.

While I enjoyed parts of it, there were a few things I did not like. I disliked the character of Ronnie very much. I just could not warm to her. And also it was very predictable. I knew exactly where it would go from the first few pages.

Seriously if you are reading this and you guessed Ronnie and Tom fall in love..congrats! You have won a brand new car! Well not really but you solved the not surprising "twist" in this book which the reader knows will happen almost from the same page.

There are other issues. Tom's girlfriend Beth. Apparently Tom's involved with her but the reader barely ever sees her. Nor does Tom from what I read. He gets the negligent boyfriend award. Poor Beth!

Beth is also described as a "blonde in a blue dress" or something like that followed by Ronnie 's commentary on how boring blondes in blue dresses are. As a blonde who loves the color blue I object!

The there is the ending. Spoilers follow for all who care:

Once all the bad stuff is done, Ronnie must decide whether to give up her life of luxury and be with sexy but not wealthy Tom. I got a bit turned off. I remember reading this and rolling my eyes a bit. I was hoping for a complex mystery about politics. Instead I got a not so complex mystery about love, boring blondes, neglected girlfriends and selfish senators wives. Not my cup of tea.

So while it was not bad I did not like it as much as I thought I would.

4 stelle meritate.

* Note * Romance books rarely go above a 3 for me, so that's not an unusual score.

Gorgeous red-head raised in a poor divorced family is determined to become wealthy. A discussion with a Senator visiting her school leads to an internship to a full-time job to marriage after he's divorced. His kids hate her because they think she broke up the marriage.
Meanwhile, her husband is slipping in the polls, and our heroine is seen as a liability. So a campaign consultant is hired to work with her on her image. Of course he's hot. She doesn't like her husband, with whom she hasn't slept in a year. So, she seduces our campaign consultant.

Meanwhile, the secondary plot involves several politicians, including our redheaded heroine's husband on a yacht with prostitutes. One is accidentally smothered. Then everyone connected to that boat ride starts turning up mysteriously dead. Senator killed. Red (Ronnie) discovers his body. Her affair is disclosed, she's accused of murder, and then kidnapped by real murderer. Escapes after beating the guy senseless. Reunites with our consultant who proposes to her. And she gets to keep millions.

Decent book. Ms. Robards appears to possess decent plotting skills. I picked it up because (a) it's the summer of the romance novel for me and (b) I love politics. I had hoped there'd be more focus on the political intrigue. Maybe things are different down in Mississippi but a few things did not ring true to me - for example, given the number of activities Ronnie was engaged in, you'd have thought her husband was the president, not simply a senator's wife.

I have a feeling that I may switch back to historical romance and/or chick lit after this - again, not a bad book but I like to get something out of a book. With historical, I'm getting a feel for the era. With Chick Lit - they tend to make me laugh. With this, I got to the end and it was like "meh"

I'm usually sad when a good book comes to an end, mostly because I want to find out what happens next and often because I like the characters. In this case, I was relieved to be finished with it.

I didn't like Ronnie, the main character, at all. And I didn't find the love story believable. It was lust, nothing more. She and Tom barely knew each other and only mentioned physical attributes when they talked or thought about each other - the color of her hair, how hot she looked in a dress, her white skin, etc. Nothing was ever said about how interesting, fun, caring, or intelligent either of them were. They didn't ever seem to miss just being together or talking to each other - It was always, always, always about sex and nothing else. I thought Ronnie was annoying and very entitled - especially when she was so angry and hostile because he tried to ignore her advances. He apparently had some misgivings, but she thought nothing of coming on to an employee and cheating on her husband. And then, when she fell "in love", she had to think about whether or not she wanted to walk away from wealth and material possessions. I honestly didn't find one redeeming quality in her at all.

Marla was far more interesting, and I wish we had heard more of her story. She seemed real and multi-dimensional, but her chapters were short and there weren't that many of them. The book would have benefited from a better balance.

I also thought the writing was often lazy. Both times a stun gun is used, someone "dropped like a stone". Really? Were there no options other than using a tired old phrase just a few pages apart? I also thought the explanation of the murders was rushed and not at all satisfying.

I generally keep books that I have read, but this one is going to a Book Exchange. It could have been so much better.

I really tried to power through this one but alas, I failed. I couldn't finish it. The characters were shallow, selfish and immature. At first, the senator's wife sounded like a driven young woman who pulled herself out of poverty by succeeding in college...but even though she was capable of building a career for herself she chose to "marry up". Vain and obsessed with being rich, she puts up with her husband's infidelity and step-children's hate just for the luxury of living as the senator's wife. Instead of the career she probably dreamed of as a kid, she attends tea parties and entertains guests for her husband. Our male protagonist is introduced to help improve her public image and even though he had a stable romance going for him, Mrs. Senator decided she was the one for him. They fall in lust, started have an affair and without the adequate political intrigue to distract me from the annoying pair, I had to put the book down. Not even curiosity for the mother-daughter duo that were on the run from her room-mate's murderer kept me going. The plot dragged on too slowly, the main characters made my eye twitch and I honestly couldn't go on.

Hopefully, I'll be able to come around to finishing this later but for now....The Senator's Wife is shelved.

Honestly, I really really liked this book. I liked how the writing was so light which makes it a fast-paced book even though it deals with heavy social issues like second wives and politics and cheating.

At some point, I really got annoyed at Ronnie because of the reason why she stays married with an asshole for a husband. Most of the time I just wanna yell at her for being so selfish and for dragging Tom into her mess. But somehow she finds the l ight in the dark and decided for the better. And I liked that.

I think she's a very strong woman because I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be so easy to know that your husband has been cheating on you for a very long time.

I loved how Karen Robards connected the characters. I love the plot twist and the thrill. I would just like everyone to know that this book isn't just romance and all that cliché stuff but it has action and thrill and those things excites me and it made me love this book even more.

Overall I rated this ★★★★☆ stars because it isn't my favorite book of all time but it sure is in my top 10 list.

This book was too long for the amount of content and I really struggle to get behind a heroine with such a weak character. Not only did she try to seduce an employee (very low), she would rather have an affair than give up her cushy gig with money and 'stuff'. I can't abide infidelity.
When I rate a book with characters or events that are my hot buttons, I struggle to separate that from the writer's skill and try to be objective. Don't think I did well here.

I haven't read this book again for a long time. When I initially entered it on Goodreads, I gave it 4 stars. Reading it again, I don't know whether it was the infidelity or what, but I took my rating down to 3 stars.

Ronnie and Tom

I had a really hard time getting behind Ronnie. It's just stuff, leave him if you're that unhappy. The book seemed to drag on too. I liked Tom's character, I just wasn't convinced of his thing for Ronnie.

My favorite parts of this book were the murder mystery. My brain kind of half shut off whenever the two main characters were speaking to each other, because their relationship was so shallow and meaningless. I mostly hated the Tom/Ronnie romance because I generally do not like seeing bad people emerging triumphant at the end. Ronnie was a gold digger who chipped away at Tom until he set aside his code of honor to sleep with her. It seems ludicrous that a Senator would marry her in the first place, when she was basically trailer trash. She had no connections, no talents, other than her looks. I mean I guess the Senator did realistically get a prenup, but still, kind of a reach for a politician to marry someone with zero connections or education.

Also, Tom tries to paint himself as a man with principles, yet further into the novel we learn he cheated on his first wife multiple times, and they had a son together. I don’t have any sympathy for people who do this - it’s lazy and unfair and sneaky and evil. If you’re that unhappy in a marriage, speak up, ask to go to counseling, try something to fix it, instead of just taking out your pain by banging anything that moves. He had the stupidity to have sex with Ronnie at the pool house on her husband’s property. He had the audacity to demand that his son go back to school after Tom’s X rated pictures are sprawled all over the news, with no regard whatsoever to what a teenager would be feeling living with that kind of embarrassment. So yeah, a crappy husband and a crappy dad. Good thing he was lean and tan and had blue eyes 🙄
So I guess maybe Tom and Ronnie did deserve each other after all.
Five stars to my favorite character, Marla, who was the only one with any sense in this entire book. Impressive survival instincts, and I hope she and Jerry get married and their little family of 3 is very happy together.

I knew when I checked this book out from the library that it wasn't going to be a deep read...I was looking to what some call a 'beach read'. If it wasn't for the last few chapters of this book, it would only be a 2 star read. The author's writing style was mediocre at best. If you're ever looking for a book of clichés, redundancy, or kitschy phrases, this is the one. I mean, seriously..."She literally took his breath away. He watched her and forgot to breathe." Ok...cpr?? Or how about "The red marks her nails had made on his back showed up faintly through the dark." What...black lights? I could go on and on and on. This may have been a pretty good book with the back story if 50% of it had been cut out. Not sure I'll be reading anything else by Karen Robards.

The main character Ronnie has worked her way out of poverty and married into wealth as the Senator's second wife, who is disliked by the voters, her in-laws, her step-children and perhaps the reader. She has all the wealth she could want but none of the love she needs. Tom Quinlan is a political advisor hired to rehab Ronnie's image, and they form a quick bond which the public becomes aware of just as the Senator meets untimely death. There's a mystery that must be solved before Ronnie is arrested or worse. i enjoyed this book and the mystery built in but did not feel especially connected to the somewhat shallow characters.

I got about 40% or so in this book, before I stopped reading it. I had high hopes for this book, but the characters, especially Ronnie are just horrible and unlikable. I picked up this book because of the affair, I wanted to see if the author could sell it. Nope sorry, the way Ronnie reacts to Tom turning down her advances was absolutely juvenile. I was hoping for two people coming together in a difficult situation and falling in love. Slowly.

As a side note, why in the world , in this day and age, would an American woman dream of marrying rich? What's stopping her from working hard and getting herself there?

The Senator's Wife

Campaigning for the re-election of her Senator husband, Ronnie was out in the spotlight all the time. She was the second Mrs. Senator. The first marriage ended with divorce after many years of marriage and the new Mrs. wasn't too well liked by the women voters in the home state. So the campaign hired 'hacker's for the new wife. Unfortunately the new wife was years younger and a Yankee to boot. So the sparks flew between the new wife and the handsome handler. And trouble came in bunches.

I loved this book and let me tell you why. It was a story that was easy to read. It was also easy to imagine characters like the ones in the book. There was infidelity and although that was not something I agreed with, it definitely understandable. They were like real people. If you are looking for an easy to read book, that you don't have to put much thought into I would suggest this one. I've never read Karen Robards before. Now, I want to find all her books.

I wish I could say I did read it but I didn't. I got about 40% through the book and I had to stop. I will always push through a book just to finish it but this one, I just couldn't do it. I really wanted to find out who murdered the girl from the boat from chapter 1 but I couldn't even get myself to get to those chapters. It felt like all she focused on was the romance of the plot and not the back story of the murder.

Would not recommend. The main character, Ronnie, is really not great… to say the least. She comes onto another prominent character in a way that seems like sexual harassment or coercion. It’s really gross and uncomfortable and not cool at all. Ronnie is narcissistic and the book was just so superficial about everything. The author also tried to jump around to different characters and their lives in a way that was not smooth at all.

One of my least favorite Karen Robards books thus far.... and I LOVE her writing. There was something about the story line that just seemed a little cheap. If this is your first Karen Robards book please choose something else: Obsession, Pursuit, Vanished, Superstition.... there's so many better options. This book isn't a good representation of Karen Robards as a writer.

Loved it.

I loved this book and have read it several times. Tom is in charge of Ronnie’s image but can’t help falling in love with her. Loved how jealous he becomes. Will she give up her husband? Loved the action and staying on edge towards the end. There’s a murder plot that kept me on edge. Loved their happy ever after and I highly recommend this book.

This story had the potential to be filled with plot twisting details and creative characters. Unfortunately, it fell flat. The main characters were dull and predictable …and lacking morals and ethics. Describing adultery as “moral ambiguity” is a perfect example why the story lines do not work. The potential was totally there; it just did not deliver.

Probably would have liked it more if there was more than just lust going on between the leads. The murder sideplot normally doesn't intrigue me but in contrast to infidelity land... it was pretty interesting!!

Let it be known that according to this book, dick CAN be good enough to consider losing all your riches over.
