Who-or what-is Ultimate X? The answers and even more secrets arrive in the all new Ultimate Comics X series from the superstar dream team of Jeph Loeb and Art Adams. Wolverine is dead. Captain America is a fugitive. The Fantastic Four disbanded. Lives have been destroyed and nothing can ever be the same-is there any hope left? It all begins with a search for a brand new character whose identity will leave jaws on the floor and change the Ultimate Universe forever.
Joseph "Jeph" Loeb III is an Emmy and WGA nominated American film and television writer, producer and award-winning comic book writer. Loeb was a Co-Executive Producer on the NBC hit show Heroes, and formerly a producer/writer on the TV series Smallville and Lost.
A four-time Eisner Award winner and five-time Wizard Fan Awards winner (see below), Loeb's comic book career includes work on many major characters, including Spider-Man, Batman, Superman, Hulk, Captain America, Cable, Iron Man, Daredevil, Supergirl, the Avengers, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, much of which he has produced in collaboration with artist Tim Sale, who provides the comic art seen on Heroes.
Big hitters Jeph Loeb and Arthur Adams(!) combine to bring a post-Ultimatum, new mutants story of the Ultimate variety. Introducing Jimmy Hudson, Karen Grant, Derek Morgan and, Liz and Terry Allen. Will there be a new generation, and how will the likes of Pietro and his allies react, if they do? The new dark world for mutants was both threatening and hyper realistic in regards to how the majority would prefer to deal with people with genetically modified super powers post Magneto's attempted human genocide. The intensity of Jean Grey with most of the X-Men dead or captured is an assured creation. Despite all this, the book focuses to much on the gathering and loves of the next generation of mutants and not enough on the changed world. 7 out of 12. 2022 read; 2017 read; 2013 read
After a mass killing of mutants the survivors must band together to try to escape incarceration. This grim future takes place in the Marvel Ultimate Universe (MMU) which is a somewhat 'grittier' place than the traditional MU. Fast paced and action packed - if you like 'Days of Future Past' storylines then you will enjoy this. I will review each individual issue soon.
I didn't think it was possible for Jeph Loeb to redeem himself. Some of the stuff he's written? Pure crap. However, this was fun! Yes, most of the original characters are dead, but since it's the Ultimate Universe...well, I guess that's ok. So what we have here are pretty cool introductions to some of the new X-Men. Sons or daughters of the original characters, a few surviving original characters, and then some new guys. Oh yeah, and the Hulk. What?! Trust me. It's the coolest part.
If you hate the direction that the Ultimate Universe has taken, I'd highly recommend you read this. For once, I'm impressed.
My initial reaction to this had been pretty positive. But as I was reading other Goodreads reviews before writing this (as I normally do) I came to realize I only thought it was good because my bar of expectations from a Jeph Loeb story was so incredibly low. I feel the best I can say was, yeah, it wasn't utter shit.
The narration during each issue was something I really didn't like. What was being said was good, but the way it was paced out over every panel just didn't fit what was going on. It felt like it should ove been contained once or twice at the beginning and end of every story, instead it was just floating there, taking me out of the story going on before my eyes.
Another big sticking point for me was the way Sabertooth was drawn. He REALLY didn't fit in the Ultimate world. It was especially highly unbelievable someone looking like that was wondering around, drinking in bars with out everyone in eyesight calling the cops. He was OBVIOUSLY a mutant as they kept pointing out through the whole story, mutants were now shoot on sight.
The final thing that really got to me was The Hulk. He didn't seem to serve any real purpose in the story and it was not ever half explained how he was so smart. All Jean did was mention she could handel it, but they never even mentioned that she DID handle it.
The world was on the brink of destruction. Countless heroes died. The Fantastic Four have been disbanded. The X-men are gone. Mutants are being hunted as criminals. But there is hope.
The Ultimate Universe was in rough shape. Some mad man had trampled over it, destroying countless lives. That mad man's name? Jeph Loeb. The mutants suffered the most, their heritage and destiny stolen from them, and most of their numbers meaninglessly murdered. So, who better to clean up the mess than the man who made it? Well, okay, it wouldn't be my choice, but I can't argue with the results.
This is a story about a minority that has been all but wiped out, with the last of them now being hunted openly by the US government. And so Loeb has focused on that fear and grief and told a survivor story, each issue narrated by someone observing the story on the sidelines. It's not perfect. The last two issues have a small dip in quality, but it's a good sign of things to come, or it would be if it wasn't canceled immediately. It was rebranded as a prelude for Nick Spensor's run, so I'm still hopeful.
MUTANT AND PROUD!
Excellent group of characters all handled (and "introduced") very well and even handedly, with superb illustration from Arthur Adams! If they keep Loeb and Adams together on this it could be very fun indeed!
This was a fun quick read with some really good artwork! I enjoyed being introduced to new characters and the various issues they had fitting into the world. The end seemed to "devolve" a little into typical superhero soap opera stuff, but that wasn't too bad. I haven't actually read through the "Ultimatum" comics that sets all of this up, so I'm coming at this without some background knowledge that's probably assumed for it, but I was still able to enjoy it a lot anyway, and now I'm also looking forward to reading some of the follow-up issues to see where they take it. (Though if they have different writers and artists that aren't too good, as seems to have been typical of the Ultimate comics run, then I probably won't keep reading it for much longer.)
A story is only as good as it's narrator. In Ultimate Comics X, the narrators are humans, who share a bond with each of the mutants in the comic. I read the story as parts - each issue had its best moments and character appearances. The artwork is neat and has a movie-like depiction.
This volume has built a foundation from the origin stories of its titular characters, as well as showed who their rival faction is. The ending is something to look out for, as the rival team has gotten itself a stronger member who could even the odds against our heroes. I'm thrilled to know what the next adventure will reveal.
Quite enjoyable. This follows up from the events of “Ultimatum”, the Ultimate Universe event that saw the deaths of several main characters and a shake up to the status quo. One by one, characters are inteoduced/re-introduced, at this new point in their lives when they are even more feared and hunted. The story is solidly set in contemporary times, and the characters come together at least in a plausible way if not smoothly. Arthur Adams turns in some fine art and Peter Steigerwald adds to it in fine fashion. An interesting mix of characters and a decent story overall.
A typical 21st century Jeph Loeb yawn-fest. After Ultimatum wiped out most of the mutants, Jeph Loeb introduces a new generation: a new Angel (sigh), a new Wolverine (double sigh), a new Toad (really?), and a new Blob (ugh) flesh out a story with Jean Grey, Kitty Pryde, Sabretooth, Mystique, Quicksilver, and...The Hulk?
It's an uninspiring cast and they aren't really given anything to do but retread the old Getting-The-Team-Together tropes but not hitting any of those tropes in a fun or interesting way.
There is absolutely no reason to read this book if you're not a completist.
3.5. I loved this! It was a lot of fun, the characters are interesting (I especially liked Karen, Jimmy, and Derek), and there are good emotional beats. I liked how each issue is narrated by different people who are close to the main characters. The art is fantastic! This is probably one of my favorite Ultimate X-Men books, it's sad there were only five issues before it got cancelled.

A really understated miniseries that didn't get the payoff it deserved. Loved the structure and the art by Adams is unbelievable. You barely see this level of quality anymore.
Nothing much letting it down. Lack of characterisation maybe when it came to the Allen siblings, and Banner's involvement. Bit rushed in the final issue. Minor quibbles. Really good series.
I was pleasantly surprised by this. I like the idea of the X-Men on the run, no costumes, no school. I hope the next series follows this path. Also, it's nice to actually see some heart back in the Ultimate X-Men.
I honestly loved this one. Mostly because of Karen but it’s just a solid little read. My only complaint is I wish I had more of Loeb/Adams Ultimate X-Men but sadly their short tenure was par for the course for Ultimate X-Men.
I’ll just say it, I’m a fan of the Ultimates series. I still have some Ultimate X-men to hunt down and read, but all in all, I really like the direction of the Ultimate installments.
