Things were looking up for Alexandra Carlson. She had finally gotten her life back together again. She’d moved to a wonderful secluded house on a mountainside in Reno, her paintings were beginning to sell, and there was even a hint of romance on the horizon. Then things began to happen. Little things. Anonymous phone calls full of heavy breathing. A broken tree branch outside her bedroom window. Her cat, Winnie—gone without a trace. A moving shadow above the skylight. Surely it was all her imagination…
Then one day she picked up the phone and there was somebody there—somebody who knew her childhood nickname. In the background she could hear a scratchy record—an old song that brought dark memories out of the shadows.
That night something woke Alexandra out of a sound sleep. This time, the heavy breathing wasn’t coming from the telephone. Someone was in the house with her. And she was at his mercy.
In this spine-tingling thriller, Alex and Justin 's steamy relationship adds spice to the electrifying plot.

Alex is a divorced woman being stalked by someone in her past. but having no clue of whom it could be is leading her to believe it is someone close by or even by her father who has been dead for several years. Wrong! Trust me the truth will shock you. This book has something for every suspense fan. For sure it is a nail biter. There are even enough steamy romantic scenes to excite the reader. i enjoyed the plot thoroughly as I read it. Ms Luce writes romantic suspense like a pro with enough twists and turns to make you need a GPS unit as you read.
I really didn't "get" this at all...it all came across as pretty infantile and totally unbelievable. I gave up at only 7% in, I'm afraid. The David Sloane character was a total caricature and the character of Alexandra wasn't being explained at all-most peculiar. You hadn't been told anything of her background aside from snippets thrown in here and there such as Sloane used to know her husband !! Then she slung in that her dad had designed her house....it was all over the place, it seemed to me, with nothing fleshed out as any sort of history. A neighbour of some years suddenly saying "I don't like your kind" seems farfetched as well. Not sure what went on with the fonts as they were differing sizes on the one page as well which was distracting, too....so definitely not one to recommend.
This is a thriller-chiller with some heated romance thrown in. It wasn't my favorite of Ms. Luce's, but is still far above most suspense novels. I look forward to reading every one of her novels and will hope for one for Christmas.
A spine tingling thriller which will keep you on the edge of your seat. Well written and masterfully put together. I hated to put the book down once I started reading, but someone has to feed the dogs.
This book is just one of those that you don't wanna put down. It grips you from the first chapter and keeps you guessing till really the very last 20 or 30 pages of the book. The story is a out a woman named Alexandra -- or Alex for short. She lives on this mountain where she only has 2 other neighbors that aren't really that close to her in proximity. One neighbor is out of town for the winter and her other neighbor, Mrs. Klump, thinks she's a slut and she has a problem with her really from the beginning of the book.
At the beginning of the book, Alex is throwing a party for her friend Greg Ott, and she had invited Margie and her husband, and a man named David Sloane who was a former coworker of her exhusband's who she invited to the party. It was more of a pity thing because she felt sorry for him. After the party and the guests had cleared out, Sloabe tried to rape her quite violently, but she did manage to fight him off.
The next night, however, her house is broken into, which kinda starts a strange series of events, and she comes to realize that she is being watched by someone and that someone is watching throughout the course of the book. She ends up meeting a detective named Justin Holmes who is assigned to her case.
In the backdrop of what is happening to her, he and her form a romance, which over the course of the book, at some points, is strained because he doesn't always completely believe her about what's happening. Or he doesn't know whether to believe her. These two do work together to solve the mystery, which does come to a very satisfying conclusion at the end.
I thought it was a great story that was very well written, and then, truth be told, can sometimes give you the creeps when you think that something like this possible. Someone could do this to a person. Because it has the ability to make you really think about it, makes it a great book. It accomplishes its goal. I give it 5 stars.
This was a decent thriller. It kept me guessing until I figured it out. This is easy to do, if you pay attention.
Man, the sex scenes in this book.... If you'd do a drinking game on how many times sex scenes or sex relations are mentioned, you'd be on the floor. 1 tequila 2 tequila 3 tequila (4) floor It was plentiful. Hello, floor....this to meet you.
I had fun reading it anyway. It is hard to put down because it is a spooky engaging read and I really wanted to know what would happen next.
Carol Davis Luce’s book, Night Stalker, is a tale that brings forward some of those issues that we all know exist, but no one really wants to talk about it. Alexandra Carlson is a beautiful talented artist who someone wants to hurt and terrorize. Alexandra Carlson had just planned on helping a friend celebrate a birthday when her evening took a turn for the worse after the police arrived with a noise complaint, a guest threatens her inner peace and the ominous phone calls begins, she must learn to trust the people she can count on in order for her to survive. Justin Holmes is a detective with the Reno police department and he has been assigned to Alexandra’s case, but for some reason the people he interviews all seem to tell a different tale of Alexandra than what his inner voice is saying to him. Alexandra and Justin must navigate the quagmire of her life as well as the feelings and chemistry that they both share all the while trying to keep Alexandra alive. The twists and turns of this brilliant story will leave the reader on the edge of their seat.
I have been a fan of Carol since I first read Night Passage over five years ago. Since then, I have been stalking bookstores looking for her work.
Night Stalker is about a woman stalked and harassed in her home by an unknown assailant. He invades every aspect of her life and it is quite unnerving to read as it unfolds. She gets the police involved but they are unable to help much at first. She soon finds a possible ally in a police detective but he seems to have trouble with her credibility. It left me guessing as to the stalker's identity right to the end. Of course, all of the guesses I made were wrong and it was real fun to finally find out who the stalker was.
Night Stalker is a fine mix of mystery, horror, and romance that will keep you on the edge of your seat. I do not usually read a novel in just three days but could hardly put it down despite my other obligations.
A great read, I can't wait to start her second novel, Skin Deep. I highly recommend checking out Amazon and other book outlets and ordering her work. You will not be disappointed!
Night Stalker was a great suspense/ thriller. This was the first book I have read by this author and I know I will be reading more of her work in the future. There were several times in reading this that I got jumpy, wondering who was stalking Alex. The climax of the story was very riveting & it really puts the reader at the center of the suspense. I was shocked by the conclusion. Night Stalker is one that will have you guessing until the very last page! Great October read!!!
Amazing. I could not put this down. You start on the edge of your seat, and by the end of the book, after the twist that you don't even see coming,(after you have chewed off all of your fingernails...) you are sitting on the floor because you have fallen off the edge of your chair!
Wow. I've never read a suspenseful drama quite like this one. I guess me and my fiancè picked up a good one. Just, wow.
Alexandra Suzanne Carlson lives alone in a house her father built for her. It's an interesting house. The ground floor has a garage, a bedroom, and -- I assume, though it wasn't really specified -- a bathroom. The second floor is the main part of the house; living room, dining room, kitchen, bathroom, etc. Finally, the third floor is Alex's bedroom and master bathroom. I am not sure exactly how this house would look, but I thoroughly enjoyed trying to picture it.
At the beginning, she is throwing a party on the second floor of her home. A friend of her exhusband Joseph, David Sloane, calls claiming he wants to speak with her "husband." She informs David they are divorced and offers to give him her ex's number. He declines and makes it awkwardly obvious that he's more interested in her. She feels bad that he's in the area and alone and invites her to the party (a birthday party for Greg Otts). After the party, he tries to force her to have sex with him, assaulting her only, ripping her blouse, that kind of thing).
She hears noises, and slowly, she comes to the idea that someone may he watching her. One big sign is she comes home to find her bedroom had been ransacked.
A few of the characters are her, Detective Justin Holmes, Thelda Klump (her difficult neighbor who thinks Alex is a slut), Margie, Gunther (a cop who thinks the same thing as Thelda), Hawkins (the groundskeeper), her exhusband Joseph, and son Todd. The first time I read the Detective's last name, I wondered if Davis Luce had named him in some sort of nod to Sherlock.
Anyway, part of Alex's dilemma she's not getting the Reno police department -- especially the detective-- to believe her. There isn't enough evidence to support her claims, according to the Holmes, and they wonder if she is just filing false police reports because she's lonely and severely desperate for companionship. Saying anymore would mean delving into spoilers, I think.
Davis Luce did a really good job making you question who could be the stalker. Is it someone she knows? Is it someone she doesn't know? Me and my fiancè had a bunch of theories about it. (Spoiler: we were way off, but we weren't disappointed).
This is another one of those books you just don't wanna put down. 5 stars. Definitely going to be seeking out more of this author's books!
Where do I start? The reason it was at least a 2: the plot twist was a good basis for a stalker story and the author paced the novel well. Beyond that this is nothing more than a bad "Lifetime" movie. I can't count all the stereotypical conjurings this author came up with, regarding women, men, cops, lawyers, ex-cons. I know this book was written over 30 years ago but it's a bit ridiculous. I picked it up to read out of a grab pile because of its claims to be a suspense/stalker story. The only comparison I have is the Outlander books where the sex scenes are thrown in like extra seasoning. The author wrote several more novels in her "Night" series. Don't waste your time, I wish I hadn't.
Alexandra lived through some horrifying times but survived with the help of one special police officer and some good friends. Riveting and suspenseful right to the end.
You people should just read this book yourselves and write your own review on this novel yourself and I really enjoyed reading this book very much so. Shelley MA
I started out loving this book. The story line was awesome...divorced female living alone is receiving harassing phone calls, somebody watching her and then actually being in her home with her! There was so much potential for a truly terrifying tale. Unfortunately it flopped for me. While trying to make a variety of suspects, which was good, the author got caught up in making the woman the desire of every man in the book, which sucked. The police detective did not seem to have a work load other than being available 24/7 for the hot possibly crazy chick that he sleeps with under the guise of providing protection. He not only has no other cases but the entire department seems to be at her beck and call. Not realistic at all. I don't mind a bit of flirtation or even out and out romance but it shouldn't get in the way of the creepy story. That is my problem with this book...it is a creepy story and was an engrossing read until the romance part took over. I even have a love/hate with the ending which I won't go into because I don't want to ruin things for anyone who is going to read the book. My actual rating is 3.5 stars but I can't attach half a star so I will go up. I think a lot of thriller/romance fans will like this book. For those who feel like me, the unnecessary scenes are easy to skim over. For those who want to read them I do think they were well written..just unnecessary in a story that is suppose to be creepy. In my opinion there was much more potential in adding in more on the sister's story that would have added to the creep factor. Overall if you are looking for a creepy, fast read mixed with romance give this a shot.
The story line was awesome...divorced female living alone is receiving harassing phone calls, somebody watching her and then actually being in her home with her! I may think twice about a sky light now. This book started out incredibly good. Then we got caught up in the romance between the cop and the victim. I don't oppose a bit of romance in a thriller. I just want the author to stay on track. I found it to be a creepy read that got almost predictable toward the end. I still think it is worth reading. I just feel that there were some scenes that were not needed but added because sex sells. That isn't to say the scenes were not written well. They were. There were also just filler for me. I wish the filler had been some scenes with some of the suspects, like the handyman and what he thought or did when he was hanging around the house or after he got fired. Overall though it is a fast, creepy read.
This book started off on such a positive note for me. A divorced woman is being stalked. Her house gets broken into, she was receiving silent and sometimes nasty phone calls. This was all quite creepy with a bit of excitement thrown in. From then on the book went downhill quite quickly for me. It seemed that every male that she met wanted to sleep with her. The policeman assigned to her case was with her constantly and never seemed to have any other work to do. The sex scenes in my opinion were unnecessary and did not add anything to the story. The only positive thing I can say about the sex scenes was that they allowed me to skip some pages without me missing any of the actual story. I thought that this could have been a good book had the story been better thought out.
Alexandra is back in the old family home, fairly isolated and built by her father, near Reno; her paintings are starting to sell, and life is looking good. She has a feud with the neighbor who says the house ruins her view of the mountains. And now someone is stalking her, in her home - is he trying to scare her away or harm her? Kills her cat, breaks in, scares her. Police to the rescue - and the cop who falls for her can't decide if she's imagining it or if someone is really out to hurt her.
This book was okay, i gave it a 3 star rating. I can't really remember much since it was about a month ago that i read it. But the one thing that really bothered me was how untrusting the detective was of her. And of how almost everyone that the detective investigated felt about her. It just really bothered me throughout the whole book. But that's all that i can really remember...
I enjoyed the suspense in this book. It was pretty good! The main character annoyed me how she wouldn't give information to the cops when something occurred that pertained to her being stalked. Other than that it was OK though.
If you 're afraid of things that go bump in the night, this book will scare you. Who is the stalker? Choose from a range of possibilities and be wrong every time. Lovers of mystery and suspense will enjoy this book.
This was one of the most fast paced, action packed and exciting books I've read in a very long time. The ending was, well read the book to see what happens. This book was too fabulous for words. I give it ten big stars.
An exciting read. I found the long sex scenes boring and skipped most of those. I prefer... "He undid the buttons on her shirt"...... and your imagination can do the rest. Other than that it's worth reading.
