In a time when women find career options limited, four Chicago women get the chance of a lifetime - busting a ring of train robbers for the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Working undercover in Windmere Falls, Colorado, they begin to unearth clues overlooked by their male counterparts. Ruth Hunnicutt clothes mysterious characters in her dress-maker's shop. Could her interpretation of the clues destroy a blossoming romance? Sidney de Clermont falls off the train - and back into the life of an old family friend. Can she keep her cover and protect her heart at the same time? Working on a ranch even though she's terrified of horses, Moment Alexander filters a jumble of new clues. Can she overcome her fears to chase down thieves - and at the same time lasso a husband? Despite what the other agents think, Lady Victoria Barrett-Ames is convinced the real mastermind behind the train heists has yet to be caught. Is her boss the real suspect. . .or a possible new love? Nobody's expecting much from these female operatives - but breaking the case may take only some womanly intuition and a little faith. Will they ride the rails to success...and love?
Carol Cox has an abiding love for history and romance, especially when it’s set in her native Southwest. As a third-generation Arizonan, she takes a keen interest in the Old West and hopes to make it live again in the hearts of her readers. A pastor’s wife, Carol lives with her husband and daughter in northern Arizona, where the deer and the antelope really do play—within view of the family’s front porch.
The writers apparently did not research Pinkerton at all. He had great respect, as did the rest of his men, for the female Pinkertons. A lot of the details concerning this were just inaccurate, as were many of the historic details.
The stories were cute but the characters seemed simplistic compared to how real people act.
Interesting format. Each author picks up the story where the previous one left off, illustrating the adventure of another one of the female Pinkerton agents out west in the 1800's.
Meh, it was okay. The first two stories were a little hard to get in to, but I liked the third one and the last one was my favorite. The first two romances were pretty shallow (but I guess it's pretty hard to squeeze four romances into one book and have them sound believable). Probably not a book I'd read again.
A fun historical novella collection with 4 lady Pinkerton agents trying to apprehend a group of train robbers. Enjoyed it when I read it a decade or more ago and enjoyed the reread now.
can we tell I borrowed books from my mother in law again! I kept expecting it to get better with each story by different authors, but there was very little to the story.
Very interesting to have four different authors write different parts of the same story. I was surprised that it worked as well as it did. I loved the idea of female Pinkerton agents.
