This was supposed to be a look on Japan from the eyes of a French expatriate.
Instead, it was a French expatriate babbling about his career and how it was not easy to fit in Japanese society, and how he wishes the country was different: more multicultural, more social security, more female empowerment... All the clichés a European liberal takes with him wherever he goes, judging every society through his liberal glasses, without ever trying to truly and deeply understand a different civilisation.
He spent 20 years there, took everything he could (career, fame, wife), and when Japan had nothing else to offer to the middle-aged man he had become, he went back to France. Typical.
You will not learn much about Japan and Japanese people, at least nothing that you don't already know. But you will learn too much about this random dude you have zero interest in.
