Celtic Fire: The Passionate Religious Vision of Ancient Britain and Ireland

Rate this book
"CELTIC FIRE is a wondrous treasure-house of tall 'true' stories of such well-known figures as Patrick, Brigid, Brendan, Columba, Cuthbert, and many others dear to my childhood and even dearer now. These tales of saints and beasts are a beautiful reminder that the animals are part of God's plan, doing heavenly work with often more grace than granted human beings."
-Madeleine L'Engle

"This little book will refresh and inspire your Celtic consciousness. Here are bright flashes from poets and mystics. Here are people who lived as creatures of a common, earthly creation. Here are readings to remind us all how simply life is meant to be lived and in living it simply how we find reflected eternal Mystery."

Stumbled upon this book in a second-hand store. As a lover of most things Celtic, I snatched it up with little promise that it would be much good. Much to my surprise this has become a tiny treasure of inspiration. Rich with history and lore of early Christians in the Celtic lands, these small biographies and stories served as lovely morning devotional reads.

A lovely little book - it's a collection of stories about Celtic saints, mixed in with the history of the Celtic church and some beautiful prayers. I wasn't aware of the unique aspects and styles of Celtic worship. Did you know that much of their inspiration came from Egyptian monks? It actually makes sense now that there are so many ruins and holy sites of ancient monasteries in this part of the world.

It would make a delightful gift for anyone with an interest in Celtic Christian tradition.

The Gaelic language still spoken today by the shephards is a combination of the early Celtic language mixed with the necessary Latin.

Early monks found that the Celtic language did not even have the words yes and no in it so Latin words had to be added to it so it could survive.

A lovely book full of modern, very readable translations of Celtic saint stories. There are some prayers and wise sayings sprinkled in for good measure, as well. The Celts have a beautiful way of seeing the world. I strongly suggest that anyone with a love of the natural world dive into some of their literature, and this book is a lovely place to start.
