The Dresden Codex #2

Jaguar Prophecies

Rate this book
The fate of the world is in the hands of two men. One is prophesized to end it. The other must save it in an apocalyptic thriller by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Jeff Wheeler. If the end-of-the-world prophecy is true, a vengeful descendant will reign with blood and fury. The planets are already aligning. For Jonathon Roth and his family, a vacation in Cozumel became a nightmare. Pawns in a deadly ritual, Roth and his children barely escaped with their lives, and with the secrets of mastermind Jacob Calakmul. Calakmul’s to fulfill the Jaguar Prophecies―the foretelling of an inevitable Armageddon, one that will destroy entire nations. The key to stopping it is to retrieve an ancient codex―if Roth can decipher it. From a museum in Dresden where the mysterious codex is on display to the Roths’ Montana home in the dead of winter, no place is safe from Calakmul’s reach. Obsessed with the legends of the magic of the Maya, Roth knows Calakmul’s powers are real. Roth’s own daughter possesses them too. As Calakmul and his henchmen close in, Roth and his children are running for their lives. In a prepper’s lair in the Montana mountains, Roth must piece together a terrifying puzzle to stop an apocalyptic vision from coming true. If it’s not already too late. Because the countdown to the end-time has already begun.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Thank you to NetGalley, Jeff Wheeler and 47north for this ARC.

Jaguar Prophecies is book 2 in the Dresden Codex trilogy.

It has been a year since the Roth's survived the death games but Jacob Calakmul is still keeping an eye on him as he doesn't trust him. Jacob is right not to trust him as the reason Jonathan takes his family to Germany is to see the Dresden Codex and the Prophecy.

This book was action-packed; loads of car chases and things happening all over the globe. There were things I suspected in the first book and was proven right in this book. I felt there was something missing in this book but can't put my finger on what, but otherwise I'm looking forward to the finale!

That is how I feel after reading these books...
and yes I said books because I already read Doomsday Match https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
And still I piled on for the second. And really these are just absurdly silly and the main character just makes endless stupid decisions

And there are children in danger which is one of my don't read triggers

Really it is absurd and ridiculous and over the top and lacks any benefit to the reader

A nonstop thriller - YES; it really is a thriller.

JAGUAR PROPHECIES is book 2 in Jeff Wheeler’s The Dresden Codex. As of now, it’s scheduled to be 3 volumes, (#3 due out 5/21/24, called FINAL STRIKE), but I could see this taking off into more.

From the early pages clear thru the ending, the action is relentless. I read this book in a single session with only one comfort break.

This was my first book by Wheeler but it won’t be the last. He provides enough of the backstory that it wasn’t a problem to have not read the first book; good author, good author…

What makes Wheeler a great author, imho, is his ability to provide a thrilling story with all the elements of this genre and NOT include any foul language, descriptive violence or sexual content. I’d have no problem with my 12 year old niece or nephew reading this book.

Action, adventure and thrills; mystery, history and an overreaching arc that has mystical, magical or paranormal elements that’s sure to frighten, maybe enlighten for some but it will certainly heighten this reading experience📚

non-stop Excitement!!

This one was even better than the first book!! I basically read almost the entire thing last evening, getting up to 84% of the book which amounts to a lot of pages! The story just gripped me from the start and it was way more exciting than the first one. There was no jungle crawling in here but wow - it is like an action movie! A few scenes were nail biting too. Jacob Calakmul is really coming after Roth's family and he has his troops out in full which makes for a very exciting read. Truthfully I am a bit surprised that I actually found action happening in Montana more exciting than being out in the jungle! I guess bullets are scarier than jungle threats?

And I absolutely loved the addition of FBI Agent Monica Sanchez! She really made the story way better. I practically felt like screaming at Roth to trust her! So I was definitely getting more emotionally invested in this book. I didn't feel that connection with the first book at all... I am unsure why this one was different than the first?

Hmmm... Could it be I feel I cannot really relate to being in a jungle? Or is the flying bullets somehow more real along with chases at breakneck speed? I guess if you lived your whole life in a city in a northern climate you cannot relate to a jungle? Anyway, whatever it is, this one is WAY BETTER! In your face action!

I guess since Agent Sanchez got involved I also feel that the plot is making more progress? I mean it definitely adds another layer to the story! Because how in the world is Roth supposed to convince the actual authorities about the weird magic that Jacob Calakmul can do? People are unlikely to believe that.

And I like that Roth continues to be smart and clever.

This one definitely ends on a bit of a cliffhanger so I am quite glad I can just jump right into book #3. Very convenient!

This fast paced thriller is full of adventure. I enjoyed the gun fights, a car chase and there’s a hostage situation. The book centres around Maya magic, prophecy and apocalyptic threat. I most enjoyed the part in Germany, were the codex is, the culture was captured well. The plot is great and action packed but I did not connect to the characters. There could have been more depth or quirks to them. I would recommend reading this book around Christmas time as this was when it was set, there’s also plenty of snow - this would make for a more immersive read. When I finished it I felt like I had been on a wild ride and that’s something I like from a thriller. Thank you to NetGalley and 47North for an E-ARC. This is a voluntary review of my own thoughts.

This is definitely a different genre for Jeff Wheeler -- urban fantasy rather than high fantasy. It's set in the real world, present day, and this continues the Dresden Codex series. I wasn't that into the first book in this series, for some reason. I think I just didn't identify with the characters enough to be emotionally involved with them. I felt the same at the beginning of this book, but they grew on me as the stakes grew even higher.

The story follows Jonathan Roth, a NYT bestselling author whom I suspect is at least to some degree based on Wheeler himself, and his teenage children, Suki, and twin boys. His wife Serena didn't appear in this installment, as at the end of the last book, Roth was forced to leave her behind in Mexico in a diabetic coma after they won the Mayan Death Games, with the assumption that she would never wake up. His family won the financial spoils from their opponents, as well as a promise that they would survive the coming apocalypse, when the Jaguar priests from the ancient Maya taking over the world in retaliation for their conquest thousands of years earlier. But they lost their freedom, as they weren't allowed to speak of what they knew, and Jacob, the leader of the shapeshifting priesthood, kept tabs on them at all times.

Suspecting that they were not entirely safe, Roth found a safehouse off the grid, and with his newfound wealth, hired private guards for his family. Meanwhile, Roth couldn't sit by and wait for the end of the world, though; instead, he wrote a new book under a pseudonym about all of it, and was doing research to learn more of their plans and ultimately expose them. This is what sets off the chain of events in this book: Jacob and his henchmen are after Roth and his family once again, and Roth must enlist the help of a skeptical FBI agent in order to survive.

Once the action gets going, I raced through to the end.

excellent!

Absolutely wonderful! In this second book of the series, we continue our journey with the family. Dad, and three children, are doing the best they can to not only live their lives, but trying to figure out how to stop the massive apocalyptic event that is about to occur. While doing this, they are trying to figure out not only is mom and wife, still alive, but how to get back to her. Suspense, thrills, everything is in this book. I can't wait for the next book.

3.75 stars...I enjoyed this one too. There was high speed car chases, shootouts, kidnapping, betrayal, shape shifting, magic, ancient Mayan/Aztec references. Lots of action and suspense. I love all the characters especially the twins. They are like the comedic relief. I would definitely recommend this series and will be heading straight for the finale. So craziness is afoot.

Jeff Wheeler, who is best known for his stellar fantasy novels, has created an amazing thriller in the Dresden Codex series. Jaguar Prophecies, book 2, equals the first book in intensity and storytelling. I love this book and literally cannot wait for book 3! Killer thriller!

Never disappoints!

I fell in love with Jeff Wheeler after reading the Kingfountain series, and have now read everything he’s written.

Even though this is set in modern times, he still manages to weave in the magic and mystery that he hooked me with in the Muirwood/Kingfountain/Harbinger series.

Can’t wait for book #3!

Good second book of a trilogy!

Fast paced and compelling. Had to keep reading to find out what happened next. A lot of chase scenes as was in book one. More pieces of the story are told with still many unknowns. Jonathan Roth did a lot off grid things to keep his family safe over the year. He also researched the Mayan culture mostly untraceable to him. Book three will conclude the story. Can't wait to find out what happens!

riviting sequel

Picking up a year after the harrowing death games author Roth and his family barely survived. Jaguar Prophecies detail the deadly events Calakmul and followers have set in motion, and what Roth has been secretly doing to protect his family, and stop the end of the world. Action packed-this book kept me reading late into the night. Great plot twists, details and history woven together. My only problem? Waiting for the concluding book to come out!!!

Stayed up too late for this one!

It's just as engrossing as Book One of the series. I stayed up several nights long past my normal bedtime!

Enjoyed the suspense and plot twists. Can hardly wait for book 3 to be released.

Thanks to NetGalley & 47North for providing me this book to review!

The Roth family is back and it's been a year since their misadventure in the jungles of Mexico. No one's the same and there's been no word of the family member they were forced to leave behind with Jacob Calakmul's threats ringing in their ears. But Jonathon Roth won't let this evil lie and he's been working in secret to start fighting again. Will his family survive another run in with Calakmul and the ancient magic that makes up his world or will they lose more of themselves along the way?

This is my 18th Jeff Wheeler book and they never disappoint! I received the first book of the Dresden Codex for review and while I always enjoy Wheeler's books, the first in the series had some flaws for me (as pointed out in my first review) but for everywhere the first might have strayed, the follow-up stayed the course! The pacing of the sequel was right on and I was swept back into the story from the first page. The twists and turns of the story kept me guessing and wondering how they'd stay a step ahead.

I highly recommend picking up the Jaguar Prophecies (or all the Jeff Wheeler books)! You won't regret it. Here's hoping the third comes soon!

End Times Are Near

Roth ignore Jacob’s warning and danger abounds again. While danger surrounds the family, Suki begins to feel increasing understanding of the Mayan language. More information about Sartna’s condition is learned.Tension

Not easy to stop reading!!

Once I started, it became hard to stop reading. The pace of the story is fast as traffic in German autobahns, with twists and turns, where fiction and realistic scenarios keep mingling like good old friends.

Even better than book 1

My only complaint is that this book ends on a cliff hanger. The locales are completely different and the progression of a year has huge changes on the story, making it even more intriguing and less predictable.
