More Than Pen Pals

Rate this book
(This book is a sweet, closed-door romcom. If you're looking for spice, you won't find it here!)

I deceived him for four years.

Ash and I were childhood pen pals. He thought I was a boy, and I never told him I wasn’t. Since we lived in different states, he’d never find out. Right?

Wrong. Well, he didn’t figure it out when we were kids, but now we’re sitting a few tables away from each other in a downtown Chicago restaurant, and I’m about to be exposed as a fraud.

I know what you’re thinking: Just keep your mouth shut, and he won't know who you are.

Wrong, again. My lunch companion and co-worker, Wendy, knows him. Wait. Let me amend that. She’s infatuated with him. Oh, yes. My newest friend has a crush on the boy I betrayed. What are the odds? Infinitely low. That’s what they are.

To top things off, Ash’s brother just saved me from choking to death. It’s been an eventful lunch, to say the least. And now Wendy is determined to stop by their table to thank him again and to flirt with Ash.

He’s going to hate me, right?

Please tell me I’m wrong.

More Than Pen Pals is a Throwback RomCom set in the late 1980s. It reads like a contemporary romance with all the tropes, closed-door chemistry, and banter, but the relationship evolves without the use of cell phones or the Internet. Dating was a whole different game in the 80s!

This is not a romcom. To be a romcom there has to be something funny. There is no funny hijinx or witty banner to be found. I don't think I even cracked a smile the entire time I read this.

I love the love letter/penpals trope so I was really excited about this one. Unfortunately the wishy washy waffling between Ash, the H, and Leslie, the h, was annoying and unrealistic. The conflict, whether they could date or not since Leslie just got out of a 2 year relationship was completely contrived. Not to mention, the way it was handled was dumb and extremely unbelievable.

Growing up in the 80's I did like the little throwback items sprinkled in and Ash was a sweet dreamboat, but it wasn't enough to save this. The emotional aspects of the story felt by the characters were unrealistic. The MCs were constantly overwhelmed, overcome, or tearing up. It's pretty instalove, though it's hard to tell where it came from since they never really date. Then just to round it all out, there is some OW/OM drama and there is no heat. This is completely clean with only some kisses.

I was so excited for this when I saw it, unfortunately it also had three of my worst pet peeves in stories added with having zero heat. I wanted to DNF after the second time they decided they couldn't date but I was wanting so bad to see Ash lose his V card, and in the end I was disappointed in that too.

When I saw that this book was an 80's Throwback, I knew that this would be a book for me! I absolutely loved this one! Brings me back to my childhood - before the internet and all of the technology that we have today to meet new people. SO relatable!!!

Leslie and Ashley were paired up as Pen Pals when they were younger. After a few months, Leslie realized that Ashley was not the girl that she thought that she was writing to… he was a boy who thought that Leslie was a boy. Leslie continued the lie for the next four years before they lost contact with each other. Fast forward about 15 years and they unexpectedly meet each other and the truth is revealed.

I adored everything about this book. Even though the supporting characters were amazing (and I can’t wait to read the next one)!!! This was a quick and easy read but I do feel that at times that the book was a little drawn out with the “rules” changing between them. Leslie seemed to cause a lot more drama than was needed. I think both Ash and Randall were my favorite characters - they overcame so much growing up with their awful father. I was so proud of them standing up to him in order to live their best lives. Lots of ups and downs in this book but it was really a joy to read!

I am rating this book a 4.5 out of 5 - did I mention that I am excited for the next book?

Thank you to Dana for the Advanced Readers Copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!

Let me just start this off by saying - I LOVED this book. It is a little longer compared to most rom-coms, but I’m obsessed and excited to read about Wendy when that book releases this summer! This is an 80’s rom com set in Chicago. Leslie and Ashley both were pen pals in the fourth grade, and wound up writing to each other for four years! Now after all this time, they unintentionally meet in person - except Ash doesn’t know that Les was actually a girl. Wendy (Leslie’s best friend) and Randall (Ash’s brother) were the absolute best hype woman/man. The end had me so nervous and angry because of their dad, and I do wish we were able to read about how that was playing out when he realized the brothers weren’t going to put up with his sh*t anymore. 🥹 over all a great book, a great love story, and another one that had me holding back tears.

Thank you Dana for this ARC in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts and opinions are mine. 💗

I loved this book so much! The characters had distinct personalities and they COMMUNICATED which often doesn't happen in this type of book. The side characters were entertaining and a few of them almost stole the show. The FMC often struggled with her emotions but they were justified considering what shed been through. the MMC was dreamy as heck. I can't wait to read the next book in this series about best friend Wendy.

I received a complimentary advance copy from the author and am leaving my honest review.

I have not read any of Dana Wilkerson’s novels prior to this one, but I will be adding her to my last of continuing authors (which seems to grow at an alarming rate.)

Leslie Beckett used to be the pen pal of Ashley Hamilton, but there’s a problem. She never told Ashley, who is a boy, that she was a girl. For four years, Ash told her his secrets then they drifted apart. Now years later, Leslie has moved to Chicago and works in a PR company that Ash just so happens to be the legal counsel for.

While at a lunch with her co-worker, she starts to choke, and Ash’s brother Randall gives her the Heimlich. Introductions cause her to be exposed to Ash for a fraud, and all Leslie is hoping for is that he won’t hate her too much. Is it too late to ask for forgiveness?

I loved this book. It was light, funny, and super cute. It’s established almost 40 years ago in 1988, but since I was born then with older siblings, I don’t consider this historical romance. It was really nostalgic to remember how dating used to be done before cell phones and the internet. I do remember us having AOL Instant Messenger, but even then, you tied up the phone line, so it was easier to write letters or talk in person. I also remember how the fourth grade started the “pen pal” program. My assigned partner never wrote me back, so I wrote to an older distant cousin who was a Marine (best pen pal ever), but I can say that I probably would have done what Leslie did and not told Ash that I was a girl. Once you are comfortable with something like that it is hard to let go.

However, I did find Leslie to sometimes be too much of a drama queen for my tastes. I have no patience for relationship drama, not when I was a teenager and certainly not now as an adult. That said I wish there had been more letters written in the novel, as it would probably assist with Leslie’s progression and had saved on any misunderstandings. Then more drama could have unfolded in different, more pointed area. That particularly one wasn’t wrapped up for me, so I’m hoping the next installment will answer any unasked question.

I loved Ash the most, because he was so wholesome and down to earth. Honestly the best line of the whole novel was “Then you’ll always be my Frank.” (If you know, then you know.) I loved his interaction with older brother Randall, but it was how he handled Carmen and his sisters that really sealed the deal. Unfortunately, the attitudes that author Wilkerson wrote about immigration and women working 40 years ago haven’t completed changed today. Sometimes I can’t help but think that the immigration aspect has gotten worse, or at least the violence of it is more openly talked about.

Overall, I rate this novel 4.5 out of 5 stars. I can’t wait for the second novel coming out summer of 2023, per What’s Next note. This time it will be Wendy’s turn and I cannot wait to see what happens.

When I saw a post of the book on IG I was drawn to it. It sets in the 80s with Pen Pal Friends and a misunderstanding a few years ago. At present, the 80s for them, they meet again and from that moment they interact with each other until they become more than Pen pals. Along the way, they faced pain, frienship, love, longing...
What I love most of the book is the original idea to set the story in other time. The secundary characters, Wendy and Randall are great! They almost stole the show. Cant wait to read the 2nd book in this series

I thoroughly enjoyed this quick, easy read. It was a clean romance set in time before people just texted their love interests or used Facebook to find their old friends! But not so long ago that it feels ancient or historic. I felt I could completely relate to this story. I mean who didn't love having a good pen pal growing up?!? The 2 main characters are great to follow along through each of their point of views. I love getting to see both sides of a story! I highly recommend this book!

More Than Pen Pals By Dana Wilkerson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ash and Leslie were assigned pen pals when they were kids and thought they were writing to the same sex. Leslie found out first that Ash was a boy but didn't tell him she was a girl. It shouldn't be a problem since they live in different states, right? Well ... Leslie moves to Chicago and starts working at a PR firm that works with Ash's law firm. She didn't know until it was too late and now she has to find a way to fix her mistake of lying to Ash all those years ago. Will they overcome this obstacle together?

This closed door rom-com set in the 80s was a joy to read! I could not put this book down and I'm so happy I was able to read the ARC. Reading how dating worked in the 80s was eye-opening - instead of using an app or texting someone "u up" you would have to leave voicemails on their home phone to track them down. Wild times! The side characters were great and I am looking forward to Wendy's story! There is no third act break-up too. I would recommend to any reader who enjoys romance or who want to try a romance book and don't know where to start.

I received a complimentary advance copy from the author and am leaving my honest review. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

I really enjoyed this! While this romcom is set in the 80s, I found it was definitely relatable to current times. Ash & Leslie were penpals when they were kids and he didn’t realize she was a girl. They end up having a hilariously awkward meet cute years later and restart their former friendship to more. Leslie is coming off of a breakup so they become penpals again💜 Ash & Leslie don’t have it easy as they deal with emotions, but they communicate! I absolutely loved the supporting cast of friends/siblings. I’m super excited for their stories-cannot wait!! I was also happy to find out the Beckett, Leslie’s cousin, stars in Dana’s cozy mystery series and will be reading that soon!

From the very first page of my advanced reader copy to the last line I was so intrigued by the back and forth dynamic of the dual point of view! Hurriedly turning the page to see what Ash would think and feel about Leslie! The details of time period and the characters definitely made the book stand out as a new favorite series. I cannot wait to read what happens next in the lives of my new friends! This is another must read series especially since the author left us wanting more of this funny and sweet love story!

This romance was clean from sex and crude language and was an absolute joy to read. I did not want to stop.

The reminiscences of the 1980s was fun. I listened to an 80s station while reading and expected to look up from my book and be back in my childhood bedroom. I know the author is releasing a playlist soon for this book. How fun!

If you read her Totally 80a cozy mystery series you will want to read this. It is Beckett’s cousin! I love when books overlap.

Settle yourself in your comfy pants and chair and expect to finish in one sitting.

More than Pen Pals takes you back to the day of love where technology conveniences of today were non-existent. No email. No text messages. No DMs. Love flourishes through a comedy of errors and a series of handwritten notes. Grab a copy of this book and a Clearly Candian and take yourself back to the days of Aqua Net hairspray, big hair, and fishnet stockings. This throwback rom-com does not disappoint.

Cue up your Walkman and grab your aerosol hairspray cause we’re heading back to the 80’s for this rom-com.

After a childhood misunderstanding between penpals leads to an interesting meet-cute Between Ash and Les(lie) what ensues is an interesting look into dating before cell phones and Tinder.

I enjoyed this little blast into the past although I was too young for dating in the 80’s I’m definitely old enough to get all the references.

What I Loved:
-I thought the misunderstanding was actually a super cute idea for story.
-I loved the character of Ash and his desire to do more for others. I also love that during the course of the story and his relationship with Leslie he really comes to trust himself and his vision for his future.
-I loved Ash’s protectiveness over Leslie
-Loved the side Characters of Randall and Wendy (Wendy’s book is next and I’m definitely rooting for these two to get together)
-Loved the growth of Ash & Randall’s relationship

What worked less for me:
-I liked Leslie but she was a bit wishy washy
-Very fast timeline
-I loved the idea that they we’re going to write letters to each other and that could have been a great way to build up some of the chemistry they needed but the whole idea was abandoned quickly

Overall this was definitely a cute rom-com with some sweet nostalgia and I’m looking forward to the next book!

More Than Pen Pals by Dana Wilkerson is a nostalgic, sweet friends-to-lovers romance set in 1980s Chicago about two childhood pen pals who reconnect as adults and discover that honesty, forgiveness, and second chances can be the start of something real. Leslie Beckett and Ash Hamilton wrote to each other for years as kids, both under the impression they were writing to someone of the same gender, and Leslie never corrected Ash’s assumption that she was a boy.

Decades later, they run into each other at a restaurant and the truth comes out, setting off a journey from awkward reunions to heartfelt friendship and maybe much more. The story unfolds without modern technology like cell phones or the internet, reminding readers what dating and connection felt like before instant messages and swipes.

What delighted me most in this book was how the 80s setting feels alive without feeling gimmicky, and how the emotional stakes rest not just on the miscommunication of the past but on the way Leslie and Ash learn to see each other fully as adults. The dual perspective allowed me to feel their vulnerability, their awkwardness, and their longing in equal measure, so that every moment of connection felt earned.

I loved watching their friendship reforge itself with humor and gentle banter, and how the supporting characters like Wendy and Ash’s brother added warmth and levity around the edges. Though some moments felt drawn out or indecisive between the leads, I felt genuinely invested in their growth and in the magic of discovering love where unexpected. This is a cozy, clean romance that made me smile, sigh with affection, and cherish a love built on patience and understanding.

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars. I chose this rating because More Than Pen Pals is an engaging romance that captures the innocence and depth of connections made both by letter and in person. It transported me into a different era of love with humor and heart, even if a few pacing choices felt more nostalgic than necessary.

The cover is fine. I don't like the colours though. The blurb is catchy.

It starts off nice, but quickly turns boring. It's only when they propose to be pen pals again that the story finally gets a breath of fresh air. It's a unique concept to know someone and propose being pen pals. I like their terms and conditions, although they could've been done away with, as happens later in the story. It's frustrating to read about Leslie constantly asking them not to date each other. But that's a novel concept that holds potential if dealt with appropriately, which isn't the case with this book. The physical relief they feel at hearing each other's voice is romantic. I'd like to read more novels about people who sigh and sway and cry and feel relieved at hearing their beloved's voice. Towards the end, the story redeemed itself.

I don't know what it is about books set in the era before smartphones, but I find them to be boring. I can almost never connect to those stories. That's the reason I found this plot slow and the characters unlikeable. If that's not you, this might be a good book for you. It just didn't work for me and put me to sleep every time I read it, frustrating me enough to take a reading break.

I obtained an e-ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

So! This was my first book from this author and she did NOT disappoint! This story was so beautiful and showed such a realistic view in how strong love can truly be!

The dynamic of Ash & Leslie was amazing! It’s funny how they both thought they could wait on love like how can you do that! lol

Also, the banter between Ash & Randall was hilarious and the friendship of Wendy & Leslie was soo good!

Ultimately, I had an great time reading this and seeing the relationship between Ash & Leslie grow stronger and stronger by the chapter!🥰🫶

This is book 1 of the throwback romcom series!

Ash and Leslie were childhood pen pals. Ash thought Leslie was a boy and she never told him otherwise since they lived in different states, it didn’t matter, right?

Wrong. Years later, they meet in person through a mutual friend, one that is infatuated with Ash. What are the odds?

More Than Pen Pals is a closed-door Throwback RomCom set in the late 1980’s where the relationships evolve without the use of cell phones or the Internet when dating was a whole different game!

My thoughts:
I love this book! It was lighthearted, funny, and sweet! I loved the trust and respect Ash and Leslie had for each other and the support they got from their friends, Wendy and Randall.

I love open-door romance and this was the exact opposite. The absence of physical romance didn’t detract from the relationship between Ash and Leslie, and I actually believe it helped build their love for each other in the end since their relationship was built on trust, respect, and friendship.

I highly recommend this book to all romance lovers, and if you aren’t yet a romance fan but want to dip your toes into the genre, this is the perfect book to start with!

A huge thanks to author Dana Wilkerson for the physical copy. This is a voluntary and honest review.

Reading this book is an interesting experience. It is a throwback romance that means that story is set in 80th! I wasn’t even born back then! And it is a clean romance, which is different to closed door romance (even more pure and innocent).

Main characters are very young and rather innocent. They try to do the right thing, they get help from friends and family there where they lack experience and are pure hearted.

If you are looking for an easy, funny and clean read - give this book a try 😉

I have read this book as a part of ARC team.

Leslie & Ashley..

This was a super cute book & I loved that it was a “throwback.”

Leslie & Ash meet in fourth grade as penpals. A few months in Leslie finds out Ash isn’t a girl but doesn’t say anything to Ash - who thinks Leslie is a boy.

Flash forward fifteen years.. they’re both living in Chicago and having lunch at the same restaurant.

I loved the buildup of their relationship, all of the family drama, the side characters, the ending..

I also loved reading a book set in the 80’s/90’s.

I was drawn in to this book by all of the characters (not just the former pen pals), their believable personalities, and how their relationships deepened and developed. The romance is sweet (and at times steamy), but the friendships are even sweeter. The author has the gift of bringing to life the characters in her books. I feel like I know them and would like to be friends with them. Their cute dialogue and witty banter made me smile. I couldn’t put down this book! When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about it!

Once I started it, I had a hard time putting it down. Very easy reading and clean which I really appreciate. Some of the characters surprised me and weren’t what I was expecting. I couldn’t wait to get to the end but then I felt like it came to quickly and I wanted more. This is my favorite of Dana’s fiction books so far.

I got this book on a fill your Kindle day, and I picked it because I thought it sounded interesting to read a romance set in the 80s-no cell phones, no texting. I felt like the storyline wasn't very deep and a little slow moving for what was going on. Except for the last couple chapters, which I felt had pretty good pacing. The story has clean language and kissing only.

This was a very cute book! I really loved the characters and the time setting of this one. I’m a 90s baby, but some of the 80s mentions reminded me so much of learning about my mom and her time growing up. Many of the products and bands are things I still remember us talking about and I loved having that connection.

This is definitely not a smut book at all so if you’re looking for spice you won’t find it here. We have many kissing scenes and a few allusions of the dirty deed towards the end! Cutesy romance only!

One thing I had a tough time with is the constant back and forth. The characters were veryyyy messy and couldn’t seem to make up their mind on dating one another. I knew it would work out in the end, but it felt a little too childish after the third or fourth time they were second guessing each other.

Overall, this was a super quick read and a great intro to this author! I’d recommend this one for the nostalgia and friendship of all the characters, especially the side characters!

I feel like the author lost her momentum halfway through and I found myself skimming. I feel like there were too many over reactions about small things that were no biggie. The main female came off immature and sounded more like a teenager. The Back and forth of why they couldn't date or be together got old. I did like Ash though. He's the only reason I made it to 76% and then marked it as a dnf. The book felt to long and would have worked out better as a novella.

Why did I read this? The premise was cute, but it needed better editing and it was soooooo predictable. Also traveled at super fast speed. Leslie also goes back and forth between being a strong, independent woman and a jealous shrew so frequently it'll give you whiplash.

3.5 stars. More Than Pen Pals is a look back in time (I refuse to think of 35 years as historical, yet here we are) when dating was done without the help of the internet, and actual phone calls were needed. From a modern perspective, it was interesting to see how this all played out! The story follows Ashley and Leslie, who were childhood pen pals as part of an elementary school program. With their gender neutral names, each thought they were writing to another boy/girl, and Leslie having a twin brother shown in her shared photos only further confused matters. However, once Ashley shared his photo, Leslie realizes he is in fact a boy, but continues to allow him to think she is a boy so he doesn't stop writing to her. Eventually they stop writing during their teen years. Fast forward to their present day, and Leslie finds herself working in Chicago, where Ash is from. They end up running into each other at a restaurant, and after a near disastrous encounter, Ash learns her name and realizes her deception. He, in my opinion, completely overreacts and storms away from her. As luck would have it, they end up working closely together, with Ash being the legal counsel for Leslie's PR firm, so can't avoid each other. After talking about their situation, Ash forgives Leslie, and they decide to become pen pals again to learn about each other as adults, before getting into a relationship. This ended up fizzling out, and I wish I would have seen more letter writing between the pair as adults, because that's a favorite trope of mine. This was a very wholesome read, and Ash is the kind of MMC with a moral compass pointing due north, extremely just and respectful. In the end, they are able to overcome their personal and professional obstacles and get their HEA, quickly as was somewhat more appropriate for the time period. If you like mistaken identity tropes and a vintage feel, you will definitely like this one!

💕 Thank you to Dana Wilkerson for providing me with a copy of More Than Pen Pals to review! All opinions are my own.

Romance level: kissing; intense make outs; sex situations implied (no details) - closed door.

This is my first story from Dana, & I loved how unique it was! The whole pen pal situation was funny & cute. I loved the idea of a romance in the 80's. As the author said, pursuing someone was different back then! No HD phones, no social media or internet... Another type of dynamic.

These two were just so funny. After the whole ID mishap, it was really interesting to see them reconnect & deal with each other. Their relationship was a mix between an instant crush and years of knowing each other since childhood.

So many situations that got out of them being honest & communicating... But also small mishaps from omitting details. I just loved how even if they overreacted, they still talked about it once they calmed down.

That first kiss was 🔥. You could see the longing building up. The chemistry was definitely there 👌🏻

She was so deeply hurt by her ex. The whole situation of healing & being ready for a new relationship was realistic. It was a rollercoaster 🎢, you wanted it to get solved & for them to be happy.

Randall, Wendy, Shannon, George & Diego were amazing second characters! I loved their role in the story, how supportive they were & how they put those two in their place when needed😍🙌🏻.

As their attraction was growing, I loved how he stated his physical boundaries for their intimacy. It was so nice having a male lead stating how nervous or "inexperienced" he is in that department. Also, although things get heated, no details are described beyond toying with shirt buttons & steamy kisses💋.

After the plot hits, it was so sweet seeing them seek comfort & looking out for each other 💙. Also, the epilogue was really cute. I can't wait to see what other stories come out from this! I'll definitely be looking forward to every single one of them.

⚠️TW: manipulative partner & parent (not MC); cheating (not MC).

📖 ARC REVIEW 📖

Thank you @danawilkersonbooks for an early copy of More Than Pen Pals. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. 🤍

More Than Pen Pals is a throwback romantic comedy about Ash and Leslie set in the 1980s. At ten years old, both Ash and Leslie became pen pals, each thinking there were the same gender; Ash thought Leslie was a boy too, while Leslie thought Ash was a girl too until Ash sent her a photo and she learned Ash was a boy. Reluctant to let Ash know the truth, thinking she wouldn’t have a friend and they would lose their connection; she decides not to tell him she’s a girl for four years of being pen pals. More than a year later, they meet again. Would Ash accept the truth that his pen pal has been a girl all along?

🛑Read on with caution; review MAY contain spoilers🛑

It’s refreshing to read about two main characters “dating” without the use of advanced technology we currently have today. There was no mention of mobile phones and social media, etc. Most conversations in the novel were made face to face, with the author able to convey the emotions of each character; mainly Ash and Leslie opening up to Randall and Wendy about their relationship respectively. I loved each character’s dynamic and friendships; their personalities were so distinct and fun, and while I enjoyed how sweet and thoughtful Ash was to everyone, he seems too perfect a character for my liking, like his only flaw from my perspective, is his lack of dating experience (he said so himself).

Leslie is probably my favorite character in this novel – she’s not afraid to voice out her thoughts, and she’s very considerate of Ash’s feelings and very upfront that while she really wanted to be with him, she can’t yet because she just got out of a long-term relationship and she’s afraid of him being her rebound and hurting him in the end.

This is a fun, quick read that will pull you in with the "will they, won't they" end up together plot. The throwback to the 80s setting with romance, pen pals, landlines, women in the workforce and more is a blast to read.

Old friends reunite but one party finds that the other is not who he thought they were...how much of the past is true? I love how quickly that plot point comes into play in the story. I was worried it would take longer but was pleasantly surprised at where it is placed in the story. Because of that, it gets the ball rolling with the story pretty quickly and helps pull you into the romance.

I really enjoyed the romcom aspect of the story. I laughed multiple times at interactions between characters or the situations they get themselves into. I loved the topics of friendship and forgiveness that play important roles in the story and give the reader something to think about. Most of all I loved the characters. Leslie and Ash themselves as well as all the side characters who add so much to the story. I am looking forward to another book in this series because I am invested in the characters and want to see them all get their happily ever after endings!

Content: Closed door romcom- kissing, they discuss how they aren't ready to take things to the next level yet physically, it is mentioned that other characters have slept around, alcohol consumption.
