Lady Winton's first marriage was blessedly brief; she would never marry again. Better an impoverished portrait painter than that. Lord Temple's marriage had been equally disastrous; his unfaithful wife died by her own foolishness. Julia and Noel, however, are haunted by a ghostly woman in white, bringing mystery and menace. In the search for a solution, they find a second chance for love... Regency Romance by Emily Hendrickson; originally published by Signet
Doris Emily Hendrickson lives in Reno, Nevada, with her husband, a retired airline pilot. Of all the many places she has traveled around the world, England is her favorite, and the most natural choice as the setting for her novels. In addition to her Regency romances, she has written a Regency Reference Book.
She is also the recipient of the Romantic Times award for the Best Regency of 1993 for Elizabeth's Rake and the Colorado Romance Writers 1997 Award of Excellence for The Debonair Duke. She is a nominee for the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Regency Romance.
Emily also enjoys stamps and stamping, and several of her flower designs, originally created for bookmarks for her Regencies, have been made into stamps.
Many of my books were re-published in England by Robert Hale Publishing House of London. My publisher requested that I use three pseudonyms for my English hard cover books. I chose the names: Emily Hendrickson, Emily Johnson, and Emily Harland.
A pleasant tale, if highly improbable, but a ghost always adds a bit of fun to the proceedings.
Julia Winton is invited to a house party by Noel Temple to complete a portrait of his daughter & mother. Julia & Noel are both widowed with children, fairly sensible, intelligent people, & his mother doesn't approve... it was surely meant to be :0)
A few anachronisms for the Regency period but I just suspended my disbelief & enjoyed the romantic ride for not one but three romantic couples, with the added fillip of an extremely nasty nanny.
This was a cute book and pretty much reads like a light gothic novel. This is Julia and Noel's story. Both are widows from arranged marriages that were disastrous and both have children. We have the usually Dowager who doesn't approve and catty competing misses. but now we have ghosts, a mean nanny and danger. The story is really more focussed on the ghost and Julia. The children are very delightful. There isn't a lot of development between Noel aside from their partnership in solving the mystery and the mean Nanny. So the romantic resolution seems rushed and almost crammed in as an afterthought.
Aside from that, it was a fun brain eraser with a little mystery and intrigue.
