Wedding #1

Miss Timothy Perseveres

Rate this book
Alone in the world, Miss Persys Timothy has lived under the protection of her wealthy aunt, serving as her cousin's companion and confidante. But once her cousin is married, Persys is no longer needed—or wanted. Summarily put out of her aunt's home, she has nowhere to go and no one to turn to—until the Duke of Eddington surprisingly comes to her rescue. He is in dire need of a companion to keep his injured mother amused and whisks Persys off to his grand country estate.

Struck by her disarming combination of unusual, violet eyes and exotic, Persian name, the dashing Duke is quite taken with Persys. But his campaign to win her affection is almost sabotaged by Persys herself, who sees nothing but folly in falling head over heels for a duke. And when the time comes that the duchess no longer needs Persys's help, the Duke must devise a way to trap "his Persian woman"—in his house and in his heart.

Emily Hendrickson

Doris Emily Hendrickson lives in Reno, Nevada, with her husband, a retired airline pilot. Of all the many places she has traveled around the world, England is her favorite, and the most natural choice as the setting for her novels. In addition to her Regency romances, she has written a Regency Reference Book.

She is also the recipient of the Romantic Times award for the Best Regency of 1993 for Elizabeth's Rake and the Colorado Romance Writers 1997 Award of Excellence for The Debonair Duke. She is a nominee for the Romantic Times Career Achievement Award for Regency Romance.

Emily also enjoys stamps and stamping, and several of her flower designs, originally created for bookmarks for her Regencies, have been made into stamps.

Many of my books were re-published in England by Robert Hale Publishing House of London. My publisher requested that I use three pseudonyms for my English hard cover books. I chose the names: Emily Hendrickson, Emily Johnson, and Emily Harland.

While I generally enjoy Ms Hendrickson's regencies, this one grated on my nerves a bit. The heroine, Miss Timothy doesn't "persevere", she bounces from one "great" idea to the next with no perseverance whatsoever, and doesn't do anything for herself, having a handy duke to organise her life for her.

Speaking of the duke, there doesn't seem to be any reason for their relationship. He is intrigued by her "violet eyes" and the fact that he thinks she's in love with her cousin's hubby, who also happens to be his cousin.

Then there's weird inconsistencies. Ms Hendrickson holds forth about how Miss Timothy is a poor relation, and even though she says she doesn't, she has an amazing array of gowns, and all of them have the "exquisite cut" of the best modiste!

I hope the next books in the series are more up to the standard I'd come to expect.

Orphaned Persys Timothy has spent her last few years in her aunt's house, but with her cousin marrying, she is no longer wanted. The Duke of Eddington's offer for her to be companion to his mother seems ideal, and she accepts. She soon settled into her new life, but soon fears her heart is about to trap her.

This was a lovely afternoon read. Persys is a strong character without seeming like she doesn't belong in her time period. She is determined to make a way for herself after the betrayal of her aunt. She's endured a brief infatuation with her cousin's new husband. At first, she is uneasy in the duke's company and when her feelings begin to get the better of her, she fears she would never be appropriate for a duchess.

The duke is appropriately stern but with a sense of humor. He falls for Persys first and is willing to discover her own feelings. When he feels she will run away without giving him a chance, then he steps in.

This is a light read I would recommend to anyone looking for a sweet and clean Regency read.

Miss Persys Timothy was orphaned at a young age and went to live with her aunt and uncle as a companion for her cousin Katherine. Now Katherine is happily married and Persys is left without a home. She's lost with no idea of what to do next, as well as being infatuated with her cousin's husband, and utterly miserable. The Duke of Eddington sees Persys at his cousin's wedding and is drawn to her exotic name and beautiful face. He offers her a position as companion to his mother who is recuperating from an injury. Glad to have an opportunity to be useful, Persys happily takes the job. She ans the Duchess get along very well, despite the Duchess's demanding nature. The Duke seems aloof and distant at first, but as Persys gets to know him, she sees that he's a devoted son and a good friend even to those who don't deserve his friendship. Harry, the Duke of Eddington wants Persys for his wife and what he wants, he always gets. He just has to figure out how to woo the lady and for that, he has to keep her on his estate long enough to convince her that she's the wife for him. Harry and his mother manipulate Persys into doing what they think is best for her, but the naive Persys may ruin their plans.

This book is well-written. At first Harry seems like a spoiled, demanding Lord and he and his mother are both managing types, but in spite of that, I really liked the romance and the characters. The manipulation techniques employed in this book are subtle and more suggestive than demanding/commanding and Harry improves upon acquaintance. There isn't a whole lot of profound character development and Persys is a mash-up of the Austen heroines she likes to read about. Persys is two party Fanny Price, one part Marianne Dashwood, with a sprinkle of Elizabeth Bennet. This is a sweet regency for fans of that sort of story. There are a few kissing scenes but nothing steamy and the romance is well-developed and plays out sweetly.

Signet Classic Regency Romance This book was so boring I can't begin to count the reasons why but I will try:

1) The h/h were so one dimensional and never grew on me

2) There was no plot I don't like big misunderstandings that cause problems but this was just ugh!

3) The Hero kept talking about violet eyes & calling Persys (yes that's the h name) "My Persian woman" which is apparently what Persys means...

I could go on but I am getting bored all over again just writing this.
